Chapter 131: Go on

Christian's POV.

She said the accident was ghastly. She said she couldn't reach Scarlett. Her voice was panicked as she spoke and I didn't know whether the accident was really serious or she was just overreacting.

I told Scarlett nevertheless. First, she looked like she was still trying to process. Her eyes blinked four times in just three seconds and I know because I counted.

She stood up, her cloth sticky with sand and the blanket falling off her shoulder.

“Which hospital?” She asked, her voice a little bit shaky.

The daughters might look like they weren't getting along with their parents but I noticed how much they all loved each other.

“I will drive you,” I told Scarlett.

She dusted the sand off her cloth and we moved over to the car. In a few minutes, we were in front of the hospital, Scarlett walking in first and asking for the ward her father had been admitted into.

I followed behind her as we ascended the elevator and soon, we got to the ward.

Her mother sat beside him, her eyes filled with tears, her sobs renting the air.

“Scarlett” she cried when she saw Scarlett and she stood up to hug her.

Scarlett stood frozen like a goddamn wood, not hugging her mother back but her eyes were fixed on her father who was bedridden.

His head was bandaged and his leg had a cast. His hands were also covered with plasters and two machines beeped loudly beside him.

“What happened?” Scarlett asked. “how did this happen?”

“I don't know,” her mother sobbed. “All I got was a call”

Scarlett breathed out not in relief, but a way of telling herself everything would be fine and that she would be okay.

“What did the doctor say?” Scarlett asked.

The mother broke the hug and looked at her with a sigh.

“They don't know when he will wake up,” she said. “They said he surely will but they don't know when” her voice caved in again.

“The accident was ghastly. His whole car was ruined” she said and sank into the chair dejectedly again.

Scarlett ran her hand through her hair, throwing her head back with a groan before she faced me.

“I'm sure you have things to do, Christian.” She said, “You should leave”

“I'm with my Mom here so I'm not alone” I knew she was referring to the plea she called an absurd rule.

Not to let her step out of the mansion alone.

I didn't object, I nodded at her. “I'll be leaving now then”

I turned and didn't look back even when I was out of the room's sight.

It was late afternoon and I knew Scarlett would want to be there till nighttime.

I called Odessa as I moved to get into my car. “Cook something for Scarlett to eat. I'll be home soon and it should be done by then”

I headed home and it didn't take long before I got to the mansion.

“Welcome back, boss” Tom greeted.

I threw him a key without replying to his greetings. “The beach alongside the double intersection road. Get Scarlett's car back home”

He bowed and moved to walk out of the mansion immediately.

When I walked inside, Odessa emerged, her hands placed in front of her and her head bowed slightly.

“I'm sorry, sir. The meal is not done yet but—” I didn't let her finish and cut her off while ascending the stairs.

“Save the stories, Odessa. Just finish the cooking up quickly” I said to her, my shoes clicking as I walked up the stairs.

“Yes sir”.

I didn't go to my room as I hadn't returned home to rest, I headed to Scarlett's room and went through her closet.

I picked out two dresses for her including her nightdress then walked back downstairs. By the time I got downstairs, Odessa was already done with cooking.

“Should I serve ma'am's meal or not yet?” She asked. “I can't find her home yet”

“Pack it up” I ordered. “I will be taking it to her”

She didn't ask questions. She only bowed and returned to the kitchen.

When she came back to the sitting room, she handed a bag to me.

“Her phone should be upstairs, get into me” Odessa bowed slightly and walked up the stairs to get the phone. She returned minutes earlier and handed that also to me. After packing everything, I headed outside, getting into the car and driving back to the hospital.

Inside the hospital, I walked through the lobby while eyes got fixed on me and people talked, their curiosity almost getting to them.

They wanted to know who I was visiting with a lunch box and if any of them had come to me, I would have gladly told them who I was visiting with the lunchbox.

Soon, I got into the ward where Scarlett's Dad was admitted.

She looked surprised to see me and I placed what I had brought on the table which was right beside her.

“Here” I said. “You need to change your clothes.”

“I brought your phone too and though it's late, I had Odessa prepare lunch” I said.

She looked at me surprised then back at everything I had placed on the table.

“Thank you” she muttered.

I nodded. “I'll call you to know how things are going. I'll pick you up by evening, I'm not having you spend the night here”

I didn't wait for her reply before I walked out of the room, getting back to the lobby, out of the hospital and back into my car.

When I drove back into the mansion, Tom was already back with the car I told him to pick up.

I was going to walk past him after replying to his greetings when his voice stopped me.

“I have something to talk about with you sir”

That made me turn back to look at him. I raised a brow, a way of telling him to go on with whatever he had to say but whatever it was, he was being hesitant.
