Chapter 39: She Is On My Mind

“Uncle” Josh called with a respectful tone. He was angry with his uncle for demoting him, but he couldn't show that to him. First, he was scared of his uncle, and second, the only person who could give back his position at the company was his uncle.

“Shouldn't you be at work now?” Hance raised a brow.

“Hance, stop giving him a hard time,” his sister frowned at him.

“You placed a stranger as the CEO of a family business, so how do you expect him to show his face in that company?”

“Pride kills a man, but he could choose to stay home and receive pocket money like you all.” He was in charge of sending money to his sister's account; his uncles and even his sister's kids, they placed such a high responsibility on him and never cared.

“I don't want to be dependent on you,” Josh butted in.

“Then go build your own company or find a job somewhere else; as long as you work in the family company, then you will forever be dependent on me,” Hance said angrily.

“Do you know the main reason you were demoted?” He decided to stay calm and handle things with care.

“Because I started a business deal with the Skarletts.” It wasn't a secret; everyone knew this was the main reason why he was demoted because that was a very stupid business move.

"No,” Hance blurted, and this left them surprised.

“Every businessman makes mistakes; you made a mistake by starting a business with them, and I understand that. Even when I told you it was a bad move, you still went ahead with it.”

“He is sorry,” Mrs. Adams butted in.

“The reason he was demoted is because the company lost two of its minor investors to the Skarlett; the Skarlett’s is a predatory company feeding on you. And all because you want to please your wife?”

“He isn't married to Kira Skarlett,” Mrs. Adams blurted, and Josh frowned at her.

Hearing this confession made Hance angrier. “You have a mistress?”

“Uncle i…”

“And then again, it’s none of my business. I pity the wife who decided to stay in the dark while the mistress enjoyed the limelight.

“He is divorced.”

Josh clenched his fist angrily, "Mother,” she was just making matters worse.

“Liz, leave with your son. One more word from you both, and I will kick him out of the company for good,” Hance warned with a stern tone. He hated lies, and what they were blurting now was a series of lies.

Left with no other choice, they both walked out of his office, and Josh turned to his mother and said, “Happy now?”

“Why will I be happy?”

“You just made him angry; why did you have to tell him about my divorce?”

“Instead of crying over that, you should end things with that Kira girl before she sucks you all off,” Liz scolded, and Josh scoffed.

“Alexa was the best match for you, but you ruined that.”

“Alexa is something worse compared to Kira; she is slowly finding her way to your lovely brother’s bed, and he is letting her.”

“What did you say?” she asked with a shocked tone, and Josh walked out, leaving her with her confused thoughts.

Liz needed someone to explain things to her, so she returned to Hance’s office and found him about to pour a glass of water.

“Hance, do you have a woman in your life?”

He stared at her in disbelief. “Is that a new motive to get your son’s position back?”

“I am your older sister; don't I have the right to know?” Liz walked closer to him, anxious and scared that what her son had said was true.

“I am an adult; if I had a woman, then it would have made it to the news. Don't you think so?”

“Alexa Parker, in what way are you connected to her?”

His brows furrowed when he heard that name, when Liz had mentioned a woman in his life. That was the first person who appeared in his mind, but he had been trying so hard to forget about her.

“What’s your point?” He needed her to go straight to the point.

“She is a good person, innocent, and kind. But pain can change a woman, so if by any chance she comes at you, then just know she is trying to use you.”

“Use me?” Hance got more confused.

“I mentioned earlier that Josh got divorced; Alexa was his wife.”

Hance clenched his jaws, then raised a brow. “And how is any of that my business?”

“I just thought you should know,” then she walked out, and Hance shot the glass on his hand at the wall.

Caleb immediately hurried in “Sir.” He looked around and also felt how sharp the atmosphere was in the office.

“Are my appointments for the day over?”

“No, you have a meeting at noon with Missy Sunset.”

“Cancel”

“She just called; she said she would be coming with Norman and Alexa.”

Then Caleb paused when he heard his order asking him to cancel the meeting. "Okay, sir, I will cancel.” He didn't want to upset the man more.

"No," he said, then checked his time, and it was 10 a.m.

“Let them come now.” He needed to see Alexa and ask her something personally.

“Uhm, is it because you want to see Alexa?” Caleb had his doubts about Hance’s feelings for Alexa, seeing that he changed his mind when he heard Alexa’s name.

Hance stared at him for a while; this made Caleb feel intimidated. He massaged his temple, and his lips finally parted as he said, “She is in my mind.”

“You love her,” Caleb blurted in disbelief. He also liked her.

“Is that the right word to use? Love?”

“I guess”

“Then how about you tell her about your feelings?” Caleb questioned, and Hance nodded.

“Right, arrange for us to have dinner tonight.” He didn't want any kids play and was going to let her know his mind tonight, and this could be an opportunity for him to know if she wanted to use him for revenge.

“You have a family dinner tonight,” Caleb reminded him, and he sneered.

“Just do as I said, and yes, cancel the meeting with Missy. Go prepare for the dinner," he said then wheeled himself to the door.

“I asked her out for dinner tonight, and she rejected it; she says she will be having dinner with her family,” Caleb explained, and Hance gritted his teeth as he turned to Caleb.

“You asked her out for dinner?”
