Chapter 17
The much awaited time was here. I get to finally see my results. The rest of the month has been amazing with my parents. I had gained the weight I lost back. Currently I was sitting with my mom and dad beside my laptop waiting for the email to pop up. Immediately I saw the name of my school pop up with my name, I quickly tapped on it. It's now or never. It reads ‘Congratulations Millie Easton for successfully completing Western Ave High School with a distinction'
“Dad did you see that. I passed my finals" I jumped in excitement. My mom and dad hugged me tightly. “Congrats princess you did it" My dad spoke while holding my face. “I knew it dad. I took it from you considering how intelligent you are " I spoke and regretted when I saw the frown on her face. “What do you mean by that statement Millie. I was very good in school as well" My mother retorted and we all burst into laughter. “This actually calls for celebration " My mom squealed in delight and I giggled. She sometimes act like a teenager.
The so called celebration my mom talked about was having dinner at this fancy restaurant. The meal we ordered was really delicious and I was grateful my parents decided to make me happy with my first ever achievement. “Did you enjoy your meal?" My dad asked during our ride back home. “It was really delicious and the environment is so comfortable. I would like to visit there another time" My dad nodded at my response.
“I'm glad you are happy. There's never a dull moment when I'm the mastermind behind everything " My mother spoke with a smile. “Mom you are so full of yourself sometimes." I teased jokingly and she feigned hurt clutching her chest. I giggled. The rest of the drive was silent.
I looked out the window at the nice buildings I didn't take note of while we were heading to the fancy restaurant. There was a lot of luxury apartments here in Florida. I quickly headed to my room as soon as we got home. I was super tired. I got rid of my dress and changed into my pajamas. I didn't realize when I slept because the next thing I realized it was already morning. The rays of the sunlight was peeking through the curtains.
I got up irritated by the blinding of the sunlight. I took my shower and changed for breakfast. The aroma of pancakes wafted through my nose once I stepped out of my room. My mother was at it again doing what she knows how to do best. “The pancakes smell amazing" I sat on the chair and my mom placed a plate full of pancakes infront of me. “Do you like it with maple syrup or honey" She asked and I chose the latter. I wasn't a fun of maple syrup.
“Where is dad by the way?" I looked around with no sign of my dad. It was still early for him to be at work. “There is an emergency at work so he got called to come immediately" I mouthed an oh in understanding. After breakfast I helped clear the dishes while my mom got to work in her office which she had setup in the house. I grabbed my book and sat in the balcony of my room. Mom brought me cookies and milk which I pretty much appreciated. The acceptance by colleges wasn't due until next week Friday.
.....
I got an email earlier this morning but I wanted to finish breakfast before I opened it. After breakfast I grabbed my laptop and went into the living room. My mother was the only one around while my dad had already left for work after breakfast. “Mom I've gotten an email. I think it's in relation to getting admissions into the college " “Have you opened it yet?" She asked and I shook my head. “Let me a have a look " I nodded and passed over my laptop. “Millie, can you grab my reading glasses from my room" My mother asked and I hurried over to her room.
“That was pretty fast Millie" I chuckled.
“Well it seems it's from Yale university" I squealed in delight. “Wait let me finish Millie before you jubilate". I frowned but listened anyway. “Did I keep you in suspense my dear" My mom spoke and took off her glasses. “What does it say mom? Was I rejected by my dream college?" I couldn't help but ask. “It's nothing of that sort. In fact you got in. Congratulations dear. You are officially a medical student" My mom said with a smile.
“Are you sure ?" She nodded and I snatched the laptop for a look myself. “Omg mom I can't believe it. I got in. This is really unbelievable " I wiped my tears. I was very excited. “I knew you will get in and as your mother I'm super proud of you my daughter" I hugged my mom in excitement. “This means we need to start preparing for your high school graduation and towards college as well " I nodded in understanding. I hurriedly got up from the couch.
“Where are you off to Millie?" My mom spoke halting my steps. “I'm going to inform Daisy about it " She laughed and waved for me to go. I came into the room and met my phone ringing. Speaking of the devil, it was Daisy. “Millie I got admissions to Yale what about you?" I chuckled in response. “Hello to you. That was exactly what I was going to tell you but you beat me to it. " I replied and she giggled. “I'm so excited that we are going to be together again. Let's book for the same hostel and room before it gets too late".
“Easy Daisy. I think that's a great idea. I don't want to be with someone I don't know" I retorted. “Same here as well " She answered and I hung up. I needed to call Alicia. Ever since she started dating my brother,we were no longer friends but I wanted to try as well. She kept declining my calls so I called the one person who will know.
“Hey Miles " I spoke when he picked the call. “Why does it feel like you are calling me for something" Miles retorted and I chuckled. “Because it's literally your fault Alicia is not my friend anymore " I accused and he chuckled. “This is not entirely my fault. The both of you are important people in my life, one is my sister and the other is my girlfriend. I can't choose one over the other because I love you both. It's best if you both solve your differences by yourselves and better not include me because I'm not going to take sides on this. By the way enough of that, what do you want to know?" Miles was right.
I guess I was making it harder for him. I don't why things between me and Alicia got to this stage. I was just thinking of preventing her from getting hurt should in case my brother decides to quit the relationship. I think I was being selfish and not thinking of her feelings as well. I let my emotions ruin the nice friendship we had and was envied on by colleagues in school. Miles was not the type to beat around the bush. “Which school did Alicia gained admissions to?" I asked and he laughed. “She didn't tell you she was coming here to Scotland as well" He retorted and I frowned.
“That sounds interesting. I gotta go Miles mom is calling me " I lied, that was my reason to bail out. I sunk on to the bed. During this month that I've been home, I had gotten rid of my braces and bangs. I now used contact lens as well so I looked different from before. I bet my friends won't recognize me on graduation day. Whatever that happens, I will try to wish Alicia congratulations during graduation day.
Graduation day was officially today and as we sat in the school's biggest auditorium,we cheered when names were mentioned for collection of certificates. The graduands was in a different row from the family of the graduands. Miles and Chad were present as well. I sat in between Cody and Tedd. Alicia was sitting in the front row with Manuel and some recent girl she nowadays walks home with. She was an arts students.
The graduation ceremony started with principal Geraldine giving a very long speech. I kept biting my fingernails something I usually did when I was nervous. As at now everyone seated here knows their final results and although I had a distinction I was a bit on edge. I don't know whether it was because there were a lot of people around.
After the long speech was delivered, Principal Geraldine handed over the microphone to the chairperson who started mentioning the names of students with their gpa. We clapped when those mentioned went on stage for their certificates. Once it reached the science department, I thought Manuel was going to be on top of the class because I slacked off a little when we were completing school.
“Can I have Millie Easton on stage", the chairperson spoke and my classmates cheered me on as I walked briskly to the stage for my certificate. “Congratulations young lady. Ever since I've been an alumni, you are the first lady I've seen to top a whole science. You have a promising future and Western Ave High School is super proud of you " The chairperson spoke and handed my certificate over to me. I smiled and walked back to my seat. The rest continued and the ceremony ended with a choreography.
I was standing aside after taking series of pictures with my family and friends. Alicia was no where to be found. Probably she left earlier but all my efforts to rekindle our friendship was futile.
“Hi Millie " Cody waved and I waved back with a smile. “You look really gorgeous today " I chuckled. “Is that a compliment coming from you?" He smirked and I nodded. “Millie can we talk somewhere private. I've been wanting to say this for a long time now but I couldn't gather courage to voice out " I folded my arms waiting for him to get over with whatever he had to say. I vowed to myself to let him know I liked him on graduation day but on second thoughts I bailed out. I couldn't graduate with a heartbreak if I get rejected by him. He cleared his throat and I noticed I had been too lost in thoughts.
“I've liked you Millie for a very long time. I knew I was jerk from the start but I want to take this further. Will you be my girlfriend?" It was really happening,he liked me too. “Yes I will be your girlfriend Cody" I hugged him really tightly.
