Chapter 112: The Deepest secret

MARK'S POV

It was the sound of my phone piercing the room that woke me up. When I checked my phone, I saw my mom's name displaying on the screen.

"Hello, Mom," I said with my voice low yet firm.

"Mark, I have something I want to reveal to you about your father, something I've been keeping inwardly to myself," she said to me, and that got my attention.

I quickly got up from the bed, moving away from Juliet and burning out a wakeful hub with my voice. I stepped out of the room gently and swiftly closed the door behind me.

"Mark, I want to tell you what made me depart from your father. I need you to know now," she began to explain something in a low tone.

"I departed with him because he was dealing with dangerous people, and the secret behind the diamond nuclear power was known to me. It wasn't supposed to fall into the wrong hands that I fell into, but while I was running away from my father's dangerous friends, I fell into the wrong hands again," she explained briefly.

But I was still trying to get what she was heading to.

"Mark, I need to talk to you, and I need you to come see me," my mom said, her voice laced with concern.

"What about what you just told me? I need you to explain very clearly," I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Your father was involved with some people who weren't exactly safe," she explained. "We had to leave because of the risk involved."

"What kind of risk?" I pressed, my mind racing with possibilities.

"The kind that could put the entire world in danger," she replied, her voice low and serious. "Your father was working on a project, something called the diamond nuclear power. It's a powerful technology, but it's not something that should fall into the wrong hands."

And I tried to tell him, but he was too adamant to listen to his own thoughts rather than mine.

My eyes widened as I processed the information. "What do you mean by wrong hands?" I asked.

"I mean people who will use it for their own gain or to harm others," she clarified. "Your father was trying to protect the world from that happening, but it came at a great cost."

I thought we were... I had so many questions, but I didn't know where to start.

"What happened to my father?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

She hesitated, as if unsure of how to reveal. "I'll tell you everything, Mark, but you need to be careful. There are people who will stop at nothing to get what they want."

My heart was racing. I knew that I had stumbled into something much bigger than myself. I was determined to learn more about my father's past and the diamond nuclear power.

"Mom, I need you to clarify everything to me now."

The night before his demise, he called me and asked if I was doing fine. I replied quickly, still angry with him for not listening to my advice. Nevertheless, he was my son's father, and I couldn't do more than what I did. But when he sought my advice for the last time, I gave him the right one.

"Your father said on the phone, 'Where should I give this diamond now that I have it with me? I'm scared to give it to the wrong hands. Who do you think I can trust with it?'" he said to me.

I knew he needed my utmost advice, so I took my time to think about who he could trust with such power. Then, I came across Mister Jones, my closest friend.

"Give it to Jones," I said. Even though he thought I was dating Jones at that time, he took some time to consider it before discovering that Jones was just my friend and not my lover. Without further argument, he accepted my advice to give it to Jones.

The next day, we heard of your father's death. I know if he hadn't listened to my advice, he would probably be dead like he is now, and the nuclear weapon would be in the wrong hands, with those that killed him.

And mind you, I have one last secret to reveal to you.

"What is that, Mom?" I asked, trying to compare the secret with the one that was revealed to me by Juliet.

"The person that killed your father is the same person that wants to kill you right now," she said. "I'm not telling you to avenge the death of your dad, but I'm just telling you this because I want you to be careful."

I caught her words short. "What then?" she continued.

"Yes, Gideon Wildheart and George Watson, my husband, were the ones that ended the life of your father. But the person that carried out the hit was Gideon himself."

"No, now I'm just confirming it," Juliet had told me few things about that incident, but I didn't seem to believe it. But coming from you directly is making me have a second thought.

I quickly said that my mom posted my words with a question. "Yes, she's right. Gideon was the one that killed your father." We later got the information. Me and Jones will solve the case. We will make friends after the death of your dad to make sure to know what we are dealing with, with the nuclear power in possession and your dad dead.

He has promised George Watson to solve the diamond for him. He paid him, and he refunded the fund.

"No, it can't be," I said immediately, and my mom generally still continued to explain.

Yes, it's real, Mark. George Watson promised to send money to your dad in return for the diamond, but when he lent it, he was trying to use it to arm people. And when your father found out that Gideon, his adopted brother, was also destroying the lives of innocent people through his oil manufacturing company, your father refused.

And then he turned to another thing, unbelievable, and yet you are still married to him. Even if he were alive, I would come straight to the mansion and confront him until he dies. My eyes blazed with fury as my heart skipped a bit with the continuous revelation of the secrets behind my father's death.

This is beyond what I thought it is. This is beyond saving Jubilee. This has come to a stage where I will avenge the death of my dad from those that killed him, and not the way they did to him, but in a lawful way. My mind was racing while my mother continued to explain everything to me.

Mark, if I had known that George was such a man, I wouldn't have married him, but I didn't know. And me and June don't have anything like that. We're just like friends, nothing more. But right now, Gideon and that has been awakened since his brother died. While you are arresting him, you are in great danger, you and Juliet. I need you to be safe.

Yes, Mom, you're right, especially our unborn child. I didn't know when I dropped a surprise message, and I thought she didn't hear it. As I covered my mouth with my two hands, what did you just say? she asked.

And I pretended as if I didn't hear her the first time. What did you say, Mark? I heard you. What did you say? I want to... I want to hear it again. She asked, present for present, me to say it again, but I just covered my mouth and refused to say anything.

And when I finally did, I changed the topic. Mom, don't be afraid. I'm going to get to the root of all this. I think it's high time I visit him and find out what he knows, and maybe you'll have a change of heart this time and not follow the bad ways. At least you are once friends.

I changed my statement, and my mom was not concerned about what I just said. What she was concerned about was what I just revealed to her in brief, and I refused to repeat.

Did you mean Juliet is pregnant with your baby? she asked, with a smile glued to her voice, as she struck us and gave us a surprise at the receiving end.

Ehm, I... I think you got me there. Yes, you're right. She's pregnant with my baby. Oh, Mark, I'm so happy for you guys.

Where is she? She's still sleeping, Mom. I don't want to wake her up. She's resting, and right now, we're not in our apartment. We're in a safe house. I want to ensure that she's with me, and I'll protect her. Nobody knows where we are. We haven't told our father.

Let's not forget I warned, but my mom wasn't concerned about all that. She was so excited at the receiving end, her voice echoing and piercing my ears with the song of joy. After all the secrets and what she went through, I finally had the right to give her happiness, like she did to me when I was young.

I'm so glad. I really wish to speak with her. Maybe I will call back in the day, she said, leaving me with a smile before she hung up the call. And then she didn't hear, but even with that smile, I still had to reminisce on what to do and how to escape all this chaos that has covered all my cases.

Anyways, I have friends that will help. I will contact Khalid, and I will get to the prison tomorrow. I must make sure that I find a means to trap Gideon and convey the death of my dad, and not by killing him, but he must go to prison and stay locked up, just like Mister Jones. That will be the biggest punishment. He will be alive to face his consequences.

Now, I have one thing to do immediately. I dropped the phone and put it in my pocket. I went straight to the study. I couldn't rest at that moment. I remembered the footprint that was given to me by my friend. It shows the fingerprint on the gun that was used to shoot my father. I had made a copy, but I just need to confirm it. Even though they are saying Gideon did everything, I still need to confirm it by myself.

I did this footprint and the only way I can get this is by getting closer to... I think I will find a way to find this location and then make sure I get this thumbprint. I dropped the footprint and thumbprint and put it on the big table in the study, and then I dropped the number of Agent Khalid while I waited for him to pick up the call.

I received the call and kept on gazing at the thumbprint and the picture in front of me. Gideon Wildheart, if you are the one, I will get you, and I will make you pay for what you did to my dad, and I will never let you harm Juliet. My mind was really on this while I overheard Khalid responding at the receiving end.

"Hello, Mark," he said, his voice soft yet simple.

"Khalid, I need you to run a check for me. I need you to run the location of Gideon Wildheart using this information that I will send to your number right now." While I said this, I was already texting the message on my phone.

After sending the message to him, I calmed down and then asked Khalid, "Who do you think can help me get the thumbprint of Gideon Wildheart to confirm some details here?"

And then Khalid took his time before he suggested that I use Camara, saying that she is doing alright after a few months of the incident that happened in the basement.

"Camara, is she alright now? Do you think she can do the job?" I asked.

"Yes, she can do it," Khalid said, and assured me. And I think I will contact Camara. She must be doing well.
