Chapter 35: Heads will roll
KAITLYN
I can feel my heart sink into the pit of my belly as the door pulls open and his footsteps fill the living room I am in.
I pull my legs together and rub my trembling hands, daring not to look up.
The choking scent of his cologne, the eerie sound of his footsteps, and the irritating yet commanding aura that fills the living room have told me who it is.
"Where is she, Mrs Catalina?" I hear him say and shiver slightly.
From the corner of my eye, I watch the head maid stand up from the sofa she is watching me from and stride towards the door.
The footsteps echo again, and as they get closer, my heartbeat increases in fear. I'm sure he is going to make heads roll again.
I gasp as his cold finger clenches my chin and he forces my dropped head up to stare into his grey eyes.
His lips turn up and he chuckles loudly, tilting his head to the side.
"Did you really think you could hide things from me?" He mutters, and my belly knots.
I steal a glance at the head maid and she narrows her eyes in return, looking away.
"Get the fucking threat note."
My eyes raise, and my heart clenches when those words leave his mouth. He smirks sinisterly and raises his brows.
The head maid leaves to get the note that she has taken from me.
"You won't kill someone else for my sake!" I snap.
He scoffs loudly, his lips stretching
"Of course, I can Besides, what other punishment do you think is the best fit for someone like that if not death?" He mutters.
"The law! We can have them reported to the cops and arrested," I stammer.
I'm pretty sure that what I've said must sound stupid to him.
He huffs loudly and twitches his lips up in detestation. His reaction has already confirmed my thoughts and fears.
"You think that's a way to punish someone like Giovanni? You are wasting your time if you think that is a punishment..." He pauses and leans closer, brushing his mint breath on my face and causing my stomach to turn.
"The only thing that bastard deserves is death," he whispers and my lips begin to tremble.
"Master," the head maid calls and he straightens up, sliding his hand into his pant pocket.
He turns around and takes the piece of paper from the woman and flips it open.
My heart races when he scoffs as he reads the ridiculous words on the paper.
He sighs loudly and crushes the paper, then turns towards me with a cunning smile on his face.
"Never knew Giovanni had such low threat skills. He is dwindling," he mutters, chuckling loudly.
"What are you going to do?" I ask in a quivering voice
He glances at the woman standing some distance away from us, then back at me.
"What do you think? Should I cut his limbs first?"
I wince and slam my eyes shut, chills washing across my body. I can't even dare to imagine such an act.
"Or his thumb? How about we start with his tongue? Nah, his sagging, old balls will be fun if it goes—"
"Stop!" I scream, slamming my palm on my ears. I am filled with disgust.
How does he say such disgusting things without feeling weird and irritated?
He grips my chin again and forces me to look into his eyes. A deep frown is on his face and his eyes are no longer grey colored but dark.
"Why? Are you that weak-hearted?" He growls and I shiver.
He grips my shoulder and I wince loudly, filled with fear.
"If you keep being like this, then you wouldn't be able to survive the remaining days you have. Several people will want to kill you because of me, you'd better be strong if you want to survive!" He snaps.
I wince again as my arm stiffens and pain fills my body.
He lets go of me and shifts back, sighing loudly.
"Get ready, we are going to a party tonight," he says, and my throat knots.
"I'm not going to that club again!" I snap as memories of what could have happened between us flashed in my mind.
He huffs loudly, twitching his lips.
"Who says I'm taking you to a club. Get ready like I said, I'll handle this piece of shit myself," he mutters and turns around, heading towards the door.
"Don't kill anyone!" I say, springing up.
He stops and turns around, frowning.
"I guess you need a reality check," he mutters and marches towards me. He grips my hand before I can say another word and drags me to the door.
"Keep the food warm, Mrs Catalina, she'll eat it when she gets back!" He orders and pushes the door open.
I am trying to protest but he doesn't seem like he will ever listen to me.
"Get in," he snaps when we get to the car.
I hesitate but a deathly glare from him sends me scurrying into the car. He slams the door shut and gets into the driver's seat then drives out of the white house.
The anger exuding from him is killing me, no matter how hard I think about it, I still can't get his horrifying words out of my head.
If I had known that this would happen, I would have kept my phone right by my side. I don't know what trauma he is going to leave me with this time.
"I would like to use the public restroom," I mutter at the sight of one at the side of the road. I hope I find a telephone so I can reach Ana.
"The public restroom is unhygienic. We'll get to the place soon," he mutters calmly, and my throat knots. Why do I feel like he knows what I am up to?
After an hour of driving and pretending that my bladder was going to burst, he stops in front of a building that looks deserted.
"Out," he mutters as he slips out.
I slowly push the door open and step out gingerly, staring at the surroundings.
The entire place looks deserted with no single soul in sight and no sound heard. It looks far more terrifying than a graveyard.
"Where is this?" I ask, tensed as I look into his blank eyes.
"You will find out soon," he mutters and grabs my hand, leading me towards the building.
What in the world are we doing in such a place?
Beside the old well-worn door, I am surprised to see a keypad lock fixed on the rough wall. Nikolai pulls it open and punches a few keys in, then the door unlocks.
He did it so fast that I couldn't catch a single number.
My lips part and slam shut in shock.
He pushes the door open and walks in, tugging me on my arm to follow him.
I look around the empty small hall, my brows raising in surprise.
"Where is this?" I ask.
"A terrifying place," he mutters, and my jaws drop.
"Huh?"
He smirked and strode across the room towards a door made of steel.
"Do you still want to make use of the restroom?" He asks as he punches in some numbers too on the keypad lock on the door jamb, and the steel door rolls open.
"No," I reply. I could escape now but I don't want to do it anymore. I need to find out what is behind that door.
He twists his head and beckons that I move forward.
I hesitate for a moment but quickly march across the room to meet him.
We step into what looks like an elevator instead, and the door slides shut, then the elevator begins to move down at a violent speed.
I scream and reach out to grab him, but he moves away and rests his body on the wall of the elevator, smirking like a maniac.
My heart has sunk and my legs are trembling, threatening to send me down to the floor of the elevator.
My wet palm on the steel wall is slipping away and if it does, I'm going to fall.
Oh, Lord, save me from this!
The elevator slams hard on something and jerks to a stop and I drop to my knees, heaving loudly.
"Let's go."
I grit my teeth in anger and clench my fist when he says those words nonchalantly.
"You almost killed me, bastard," I whisper and look up, glaring at his smiling face.
"You'd better get out of the elevator before the door closes and gives you another incredible ride," he says, and my heart leaps.
I don't know where the strength comes from, but I jump up and rush out of the elevator, gripping his hand before I fall.
He chuckles loudly. I can tell he is enjoying what he is putting me through, bastard!
I sigh loudly and straighten up then narrow my eyes at him and look up.
My jaws drop and my belly knots at the sight before me.
"What in the world is this?" I gasp, engulfed with a sickening feeling.
Nikolai looks at me, his lips twitching up, and a sinister glee in his grey eyes.
"This is the greatest torture house," he blurts out, and my heart clenches.
"What?" I gasp, staggering back as I look at the walls covered in blood. Some things are hanging in the air but I can't see them clearly because of the dim lights.
He grips my hand and stares hard at me.
"You're about to face things that will terrify you. You are about to witness death with your own eyes."
