Chapter 21: Twenty one
Chapter Twenty One
Aria’s POV
Something in Kael changed while I slept.
I felt it the moment his heartbeat brushed mine. The rhythm was steady, but there was a heaviness behind it, like someone had pressed a hand over the past and forced it to breathe again.
I opened my eyes slowly. Kael sat beside me, watching me with a calm he had to fight for. His hand was wrapped around mine, warm but tense.
“You look like someone stole something from you,” I said.
He tried to smile. It did not reach his eyes. “Nothing was stolen.”
“That is not true.” I sat up and held his hand tighter. “Tell me.”
His gaze shifted. He wanted to pretend everything was fine. Every part of the bond told me he could not. Something thick and unsaid sat between us.
“Kael,” I said softly. “Do not protect me. Not from this.”
He hesitated. The silence felt like pressure against my ribs.
Someone had been here. I felt the echo of it in the bond. A presence had brushed against the edges of my mind while I slept. It was not the Balance. It was not Liora. This presence felt personal, old, and shaped like affection.
I touched the center of his chest. “Who came.”
He finally looked at me, and the weight in his eyes made my throat tighten. “Evelyn.”
The name meant nothing to me, but the bond shuddered. His heartbeat changed shape. I felt a sharp sting in my chest that did not belong to me.
“Who is she,” I asked, even though I already knew she was not a stranger.
Kael drew in a slow breath. “She was my first love.”
The words were direct and simple. They hurt, not because he had a past, but because the bond felt the truth behind every syllable. His memories, even the ones he was not speaking, pressed through the connection. They were faint and blurred, but they carried warmth, belonging, and loss.
I released his hand to steady myself. “Why was she here.”
“She was alive,” he said quietly. “Alive and standing in front of me.”
My blood felt cold for a moment. “You mean the Balance brought her back.”
“Yes.”
“And she wanted you,” I said.
He did not deny it.
A slow ache moved through my chest. Not jealousy. Not fear. Just the painful knowledge that fate had placed him in front of a woman he once loved deeply and told him to choose.
“What did she say to you.”
Kael looked down at his hands. “That she had woken in a place she did not know. That the Balance kept her. That she came to find me.”
“And what else.”
He exhaled. “She said I could leave everything behind. She said I could live with her again. Without pain. Without this fight. Without the bond.”
My throat tightened. The Balance had offered him peace wrapped in the face of someone he once held close. It was cruel. It was brilliant. It was exactly the kind of test that cut straight to the bone.
“And you,” I whispered. “What did you want.”
His head lifted immediately. “Not that. Not for one second.”
I searched the bond. He was telling the truth. The sound of it steadied me.
He reached for my hand again. “I chose you.”
“Why,” I asked. “I need to hear you say it.”
His voice softened. “Because I love you, Aria. Because I would not trade a world with you for peace with someone else. Because she is my past, and you are my life.”
The pain in my chest loosened. His words were real. They lived in the bond with a weight that could not be faked.
But something still unsettled me.
“What happened when she left.”
Kael swallowed. “She told me goodbye. And she faded.”
“Do you think she is gone forever,” I asked.
“I hope so,” he answered. “For her sake.”
He said it with a gentleness that surprised me. A gentleness that reminded me how deeply he had once cared for her. It did not frighten me. It only reminded me of the kind of man I was choosing.
I leaned toward him until our shoulders touched. “Do you wish it had been different.”
He froze at the question.
“Not because you want her,” I continued. “But because no one deserves to be used like that.”
Kael let out a slow breath. “Yes. I wish she had stayed dead in peace instead of being pulled back for this.”
I nodded, accepting the honesty.
He looked at me carefully. “Are you angry.”
“No,” I said. “I am… sad. For her. For you. For the way the Balance tries to twist everything meaningful.”
He relaxed slightly.
“But I am not afraid,” I added.
“You should not be,” he said. “I chose you without hesitation.”
“You did,” I replied. “But remember something, Kael. I am not competing with your past. I am standing beside you in your present.”
He nodded, holding my gaze. “You are my present. And my future.”
The bond warmed at the truth. Our heartbeats found each other again and steadied.
I touched his cheek. “Then next time the Balance digs up someone you once loved, let it try. I will still be here.”
He laughed quietly, the first real laugh since before the test began. “You sound very sure.”
“I am. The Balance does not understand what it is fighting.”
He raised a brow. “What is that.”
I kissed his hand. “Us.”
The bond tightened around the moment, sealing it quietly.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt the Balance retreat. Not asleep, not defeated, but stepping back. Watching. Rethinking.
Let it watch.
Kael had been tested by a ghost he once loved. He walked back to me.
That was enough to terrify whatever gods were still listening.
