Chapter 58: Chapter Fifty-Eight
Aubrey
"Are you sure you don't want me just to take you to the office?" Everett asks. We have parked a couple of blocks away.
"No, it isn't a good idea in case someone sees us. It would make too many questions arise."
"True." He sighs.
I reach over, kissing him softly. He kisses back, resting his hand on my cheek. I parted a moment later. "Yes, we can't have anything get back to Hugo before we tell him."
When that will be, I don't know. Not anytime soon, that is for sure.
"I will see you in there."
I nod and exit the car, starting the short walk to work. It won't take long from here. We left in plenty of time, so I wouldn't be late. We will act like we didn't just leave the same bed not too long ago. I smile as I take my stroll, soon arriving outside the office. Just as I approach, I notice Hugo and Everett chatting outside the building. It is a good thing he never brought me straight here. It would have raised Hugo's suspicions.
I casually stroll towards them. "Good morning." I greet with a smile.
"Aubrey, hello, how are you?" Hugo smiles, hugging me.
"I am good. You?"
"I am good too, ready for another day of work."
"Everett," I say with a nod of my head.
He repeats the same gesture. "Aubrey."
Hmm, I hope that wasn't too casual. Hugo knows about the time we spent together when he was taking care of me.
"Let's all head in, get some coffee, and then we can talk business, big brother." Hugo encourages, motioning us all inside.
I am curious about the new business opportunity, too, but I don't know if Hugo will want me to sit in on it, since it is a discussion and not official yet. One of them will tell me either way. The three of us head inside. We step into the elevator, and I am between them both. Hugo presses the button for our floor. The two of them chat, and I get lost in a world of my own until I feel Everett's hand on my ass, squeezing it. I bite down hard on my lip to stop from moaning. What is he doing? Does he want us to get caught? I keep it together the best I can. I turn to him, but Everett is acting like he isn't doing anything as he chats with his brother. He keeps his hand on my ass all the way up until the elevator comes to a stop before he removes it, exiting the elevator like he wasn't just being a tease. I go out last, needing a second to pull it together.
We head for Hugo's office. I make their coffee and leave them to talk business. I have some things to do anyway.
I settle down at my desk and get straight to work. I have a lot to do. It feels a little strange acting normal around Everett. Even when we do tell Hugo and Erica, I honestly don't know how it will be. They will be angry, but I hope they will accept it in time. Sighing, I rest back on my seat. I shouldn't be thinking of these things right now. I should be focusing on work, nothing else. Closing my eyes, I take a few deep breaths and get back to what I am supposed to be doing.
I soon use work to distract me from any other thoughts. About an hour later, I spot Everett exiting Hugo's office and hurry towards the elevator. He seems stressed. What could have happened to make him stressed?
I get to my feet and rush after him before he reaches the elevator. "Everett,"
He stops and turns to face me. Sighing, he runs his fingers through his hair. "Aubrey, what are you doing chasing after me?"
"I wanted to make sure you were okay. You seem stressed."
"I am. The new business opportunity is great, but there is one problem. The new space will be in London. Hugo wants me to go and get it set up. Stay there for the first year. He can't since he has a family, which I understand. He doesn't trust anyone else to do it."
"What? You are leaving?" I whimper.
"I don't know yet. I told him I need time to think about it. I don't want to go because it means leaving you for a year. You can exactly come with me since no one knows about us. Aubrey, I don't know what to do." The frustration is evident in his voice.
"Everett, I don't want you to go, but if you decide you want to, I will respect that. I will not try to change your mind." I stop the tears from welling in my eyes.
It would be a great opportunity for him. I don't want to be the person to take that experience away from him. London is a long way away.
"I need time. I will see you later, okay," he sighs, heading into the elevator.
I watch after him, tears rolling down my cheek. Did my words upset him? I hope not, that wasn't my intention. I don't want him to think I will be the type of girlfriend who stops him from doing things. I really hope he chooses not to go, but that will be his choice. A part of me wants to storm into Hugo's office and tell him he can't take him away from me since I just got him, but I can't. I need to silently hope Everett chooses me. God, does that make me sound selfish? I have never been anyone's first choice.
I stop in the bathroom before I return to my desk. I wipe my tears away, fix my hair and act like I am fine. If I don't, Hugo will pick up that something is wrong. I am going to be anxious all day, not knowing what is going on. It will stress me out. Everett and I have plans for tonight. I am going to stay at his, unless he changes his mind. I don't want him to be mad at me.
If he does go to London, there is a chance we won't work. Long distance would be too hard. A year is a long time. Maybe if it were only a couple of months, we would manage, but not a year. I hate this! I hate that our relationships need to remain a secret.
