Chapter 138: Blood and Bone
The creature stared at us with eyes like burning silver. It didn’t blink. Didn’t breathe.
Didn’t need to.
It wasn’t alive in the way we understood it. It was shaped like a wolf, but wrong—too tall, limbs too long, shadows swirling beneath its skin like smoke held in glass. Its presence pulled at the threads of the world around it, distorting the air, making even the birds fall silent.
Alec stepped in front of me, his body coiled, voice low. “Get behind me.”
“No,” I said, drawing my blades. “We fight together.”
The creature smiled again. The skin around its mouth cracked like porcelain.
“You think you understand what comes,” it said, its voice a layered thing—like hundreds whispering in unison. “But the gate has opened. The seal is temporary. The Hollowed One stirs. You two are nothing but sparks.”
It raised one hand—clawed, made of shifting black tendrils—and snapped its fingers.
The earth answered.
From the forest, shadows peeled away from tree trunks. They stood on two legs, eyeless and silent, and began to stalk toward us.
Daria cursed behind us. “We’ve got company.”
“A dozen,” Logan snarled, drawing his blade. “No, more.”
Seris hissed. “Shadow-born. They shouldn’t exist yet—not this many.”
I looked at Alec, and our bond surged between us. A silent question. A silent answer.
We moved.
⸻
Alec shifted mid-sprint, his massive wolf form colliding with the first shadow-creature in a blur of teeth and fur. I dove beside him, blade slicing into the gut of another. Its body didn’t bleed—it shrieked, and shadow hissed out like steam from a broken pipe.
Daria summoned fire to her hands, lobbing a ball of flame into the trees. Three shadows screamed and disintegrated.
Logan barreled through another with his sword, roaring.
We fought as one.
And they kept coming.
The air reeked of rot and frost and old magic. My lungs burned. My blades dulled with the sheer force I used them. But we didn’t stop.
Because Alec was bleeding.
Because Logan’s arm was torn.
Because this was just one creature’s doing, and I could already feel something greater stirring beneath it all.
⸻
The shadow-wolf—the creature who had spoken—watched us. Not interfering. Just… observing. Its eyes never left me.
It was studying.
Me.
I charged.
Alec snarled behind me, but I was already moving.
Magic crackled along my skin, my runes burning gold as I swung at the creature’s throat. But it stepped aside effortlessly, catching my wrist mid-strike.
“You carry the scent of the first Luna,” it murmured. “And yet, you bleed like any mortal.”
It flung me across the clearing.
Pain exploded down my back as I hit a tree.
“Evelyn!” Alec’s roar shook the ground.
He launched himself at the creature, jaws clamping down on its arm.
It didn’t flinch.
Instead, it tore Alec off with unnatural strength, throwing him into a boulder with a crunch that made my stomach drop.
I forced myself up, vision swimming.
Daria screamed, hurling a wall of flame between the creature and Alec.
Logan knelt beside him, checking his pulse.
“Alive,” he growled. “But out.”
I staggered to my feet, blood in my mouth, magic rising beneath my skin like a second heartbeat.
“No more,” I whispered.
The bond between me and Alec ignited.
My body glowed with golden fire. The sacred bond, the seal—it answered.
The shadow-creature turned its head.
“You awaken the seal,” it said.
“I am the seal,” I spat—and unleashed everything.
The light exploded from me.
The clearing filled with fire, wind, voice, and moonlight. The runes of the sacred bond wrapped around my arms and neck, a glowing pattern of power that slammed into the creature and ripped it apart.
Screaming.
Fading.
Gone.
⸻
Silence fell.
The remaining shadows crumbled into ash.
The wind stilled.
And I dropped to my knees.
⸻
Seris was at my side in an instant. “Evelyn. Look at me.”
My vision blurred.
But I was still breathing.
Alec groaned nearby, stirring.
Daria exhaled shakily. “What was that?”
“Power,” Seris said. “But not just magic. The bond. The seal… she’s becoming something more.”
Logan helped Alec sit up, his arm draped over his shoulders. “She saved us all.”
Alec’s eyes locked with mine.
And in them, I saw everything.
Fear.
Love.
Pride.
And the realization that I was no longer just Evelyn.
I was the shield between worlds.
