Chapter 241: Where I Came From
The sound of the doorbell jolted me from my uncomfortable sleep on Amber's lumpy couch. I groaned, pulling the blanket over my head. After yesterday's emotional rollercoaster and late-night conversation with Amber, I desperately needed more sleep.
"I'll get it," Amber called out, her voice thick with sleep. I heard her shuffling to the door, followed by a gasp that immediately sent my senses on high alert.
"Oh my God, is this real?" Amber's voice was barely above a whisper.
I sat up quickly, my heart pounding as I recognized the tall silhouette in the doorway. Kane stood there, looking impossibly handsome in dark jeans and a forest green button-down that made his eyes seem even more intense.
"I'm here to see Elena," he said, his voice lacking the coldness I'd grown accustomed to at the estate.
Amber glanced back at me, wide-eyed. "I, uh... I should check on Elva." She practically fled down the hallway, leaving me alone with the Kane.
I stood awkwardly, painfully aware of my messy hair and Amber's oversized t-shirt I'd slept in. "I didn't expect to see you again, especially not here," I said, trying to sound calm despite my racing heart.
Kane stepped inside, closing the door behind him. His eyes scanned the small apartment, taking in the mismatched furniture and cramped space.
"This place is... cozier than I imagined," he said, and I was surprised there was no judgment in his tone, just curiosity.
"It's home," I replied simply. "Or it was, until recently."
Kane nodded, his gaze continuing to wander until it landed on the stack of cardboard boxes in the corner. "What are those?"
"Just some things I packed for Elva and myself. Clothes, toys, a few personal items." I ran a hand through my tangled hair, feeling suddenly self-conscious under his intense scrutiny.
He walked over to the boxes, and before I could stop him, picked up a book sitting on top. My stomach dropped when I recognized the blue leather cover of our old Bluestone Academy yearbook.
"You kept this?" he asked, his voice softer than I'd heard it in years.
"I kept a lot of things," I admitted. "Even during the hardest times."
He opened the yearbook, and a photograph slipped out – the two of us at the spring formal, his arm around my waist, both of us laughing at something forgotten. Kane caught it before it hit the floor, studying it with an unreadable expression.
"Elena," he said, the emotion in his voice making my name sound like both a prayer and an accusation, "you should have trusted me. Always."
The distance between us suddenly seemed charged with electricity. He stepped closer, and I found myself unable to move away. His hand reached up to brush a strand of hair from my face, and I couldn't help leaning into his touch. We were inches apart, his eyes dropping to my lips when—
"Kane!" Elva's excited squeal broke the moment as she came racing into the living room, her small feet pattering against the floor. I heard Amber calling after her, trying to stop her, but it was too late.
Kane's entire demeanor changed as he crouched down, arms open wide, as Elva launched herself at him. He caught her with ease, lifting her up as she giggled with delight. The sight sent a complicated mix of emotions through me.
"Hey, little wolf," he said, his voice gentle in a way I'd never heard him speak to anyone else. "Did you sleep well?"
"I dreamed about wolves!" Elva announced proudly. "Big ones and little ones running in the forest."
A knock on the door interrupted the moment. The production crew had arrived, led by a frazzled-looking assistant producer who froze mid-step when she spotted Kane.
"Mr. Sterling?" she stammered. "This isn't on today's filming schedule..."
Kane's face immediately hardened into the mask of authority I'd grown accustomed to. He set Elva down gently but kept his hand protectively on her shoulder.
"This visit won't be appearing in the show," he said, his tone making it clear this wasn't a request. "Is that understood?"
The woman nodded quickly, then busied herself directing the crew to set up their equipment while pretending Kane wasn't there.
"I should go," Kane said, turning to me. "They need to get their footage and bring you back to the estate."
As the crew bustled around us, Kane pulled me aside in the kitchen, speaking quietly so only I could hear. "I came to bring you back myself. I couldn't wait for them to return you to the estate."
I looked up at him, trying to understand what had changed. "Why?"
Before he could answer, Amber approached, her expression serious. "Please make sure she's treated fairly at the estate," she said to Kane.
He nodded solemnly. "I'll personally ensure it."
As Kane prepared to leave, Amber pulled me into a tight hug, whispering in my ear, "When you become Luna someday, don't forget about the struggles of ordinary wolves like us."
I squeezed her hand tightly. "I'll never forget where I came from," I promised. "And I won't let you down."
I watched Kane walk to his car, wondering what awaited me back at Silver Moon Estate, and why he couldn't wait for the official transport to bring me back. Something had changed, but I couldn't tell if it was for better or worse.
