The Devourer's Plan
The Devourer's Plan
Viktor/Devourer's POV
Power flowed through me like liquid fire.
Two minds, one body. Viktor's cunning merged with the Devourer's endless hunger. I could taste the fear radiating from the Castellano children, and it was delicious.
"You think you can stop me with your little light show?" I asked, flexing tentacles that had once been arms. "I am beyond your understanding now."
The twins tried their combined attack again. Silver light crashed into my form, but I absorbed it instead of being hurt. Their own power made me stronger.
"Impossible," Aria gasped.
"Not impossible," I corrected, savoring the despair in her voice. "Evolution. Viktor's strategic mind gives me focus. The Devourer's hunger gives me purpose."
And what a purpose it was. For eons, the Devourer had simply consumed without planning. But now, with Viktor's memories and intelligence, I could see the bigger picture.
"Do you want to know what I really plan to do?" I asked the frightened group.
"Enlighten us," the Guardian said, his silver form pulsing with protective energy.
"Total consumption," I replied happily. "Every supernatural being on Earth will become part of me. Every ounce of magic, every drop of power, all of it flowing into my essence."
"You'd destroy your own kind," Elena said in horror.
"My kind?" I laughed, the sound echoing across dimensions. "I have no kind. I am the first. The original. Everyone else is just food that learned to walk."
Viktor's memories showed me exactly how to make this happen. Government databases full of supernatural individuals. Secret locations where magical beings hid. Bloodline records going back centuries.
"I know where every witch lives," I continued, drawing on Viktor's knowledge. "Every werewolf pack. Every vampire coven. Every magical child born in the last fifty years."
"They're innocent," Aria protested.
"They're fuel," I corrected. "And I'm going to collect them all."
I reached out with my enhanced senses, feeling the magical signatures scattered across the globe. Thousands of them. Tens of thousands. All that power waiting to be harvested.
"I'll start with the weakest," I decided aloud. "Children first. Their untrained magic is easier to digest."
The Guardian stepped forward, his power flaring. "I won't let you hurt anyone else."
"You?" I studied his transformed state with interest. "You're not even fully supernatural. Just a broken wolf with stolen Guardian abilities."
But as I looked deeper, I realized something interesting. The Guardian's transformation wasn't random. Someone had planned it.
"Luna," I said, turning toward the witch. "You did this on purpose."
The old woman was chanting softly, her hands glowing with protective magic. But she stopped when I called her name.
"Did what?" she asked innocently.
"You orchestrated Kael's transformation," I said, Viktor's strategic mind putting the pieces together. "When Aria's power flowed into him, you guided the process. Made him into something specific."
"I don't know what you mean," Luna lied.
"A Guardian," I continued, understanding flooding through me. "Not just any Guardian. One designed specifically to fight entities like me."
The truth was elegant and terrifying. Luna had been preparing for this moment for decades. She'd known that someday the ancient entities would break free, and she'd been creating countermeasures.
"How many others are there?" I demanded.
Luna didn't answer, but her silence told me everything. There were more. Other transformed beings, scattered around the world, waiting for the call to battle.
"A supernatural army," I said with admiration. "Hidden among ordinary people until the right moment. Very clever."
"It won't work," Alessandro said. "You're too strong now."
"Perhaps," I agreed. "But it doesn't matter. I have something your Guardian army doesn't."
"What?" Aria asked.
"Time," I replied. "I can consume reality itself now. Even if your Guardians could somehow defeat me, I'll simply eat the dimension they're standing in."
To demonstrate, I reached out and took a bite from the fabric of space nearby. A chunk of forest simply ceased to exist, leaving a hole in the world that showed swirling void beyond.
The humans screamed. Even the supernatural beings looked terrified.
"This is just the beginning," I explained, savoring their fear. "I'll consume this entire reality piece by piece. Every mountain, every ocean, every star. All of it will become part of me."
"You'd destroy everything," Luna said in horror.
"I'd improve everything," I corrected. "A universe where only I exist. Where every thought is my thought, every desire is my hunger. Perfect unity."
"That's insane," Elena protested.
"That's evolution," I replied. "The natural endpoint of existence. One consciousness containing all things."
Luna's chanting grew louder. She was trying to cast some kind of protection spell, probably to shield the others from my reality-eating ability.
I couldn't allow that.
Moving faster than even supernatural reflexes could track, I reached out with a tentacle of pure void. It passed through Luna's magical defenses like they were made of paper.
"No!" the Guardian shouted, diving to intercept.
Too slow. My void-tentacle wrapped around Luna's throat and began draining her life force directly into my essence.
"Please," Aria begged, "she's just an old woman trying to help people."
"She's a threat to my plans," I replied, lifting Luna off the ground. "And I eliminate all threats."
But as Luna's power flowed into me, something unexpected happened. Her memories came with it.
I saw her real age - not decades, but centuries. I saw the network she'd built - dozens of transformed Guardians placed strategically around the world. I saw her true purpose - not just protecting humans from supernatural threats, but protecting the balance of reality itself.
"You're not just a witch," I realized. "You're a cosmic Guardian. One of the universe's immune responses."
Luna smiled through her pain. "And you're a cosmic infection. Which means..."
"Which means what?" I demanded, tightening my grip.
"Which means the universe has already started developing antibodies," she whispered.
"What antibodies?" I snarled.
Luna's eyes rolled back, showing only white. When she spoke, it wasn't her voice anymore. It was something vast and ancient, speaking through her dying form.
"The Castellano children were never meant to maintain balance," the cosmic voice said. "They were meant to replace it. To become the new fundamental forces that govern reality."
"Replace what?" I asked, but I was already starting to understand.
"Light and darkness," the voice continued. "Creation and destruction. Life and death. The twins will inherit these domains when the old order falls."
"And Elena?" I demanded.
"The bridge between worlds. The one who decides which reality survives when multiple dimensions collapse into one."
The implications hit me like a physical blow. I wasn't just fighting three supernatural children. I was fighting the universe's chosen replacements for the fundamental forces of existence.
"They don't know yet," I realized. "They have no idea what they really are."
"They will," the cosmic voice promised through Luna's lips. "When their power fully awakens, they will reshape reality according to their will. Unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless someone kills them before the awakening completes," Luna said with her own voice, looking directly at me with dying eyes. "Someone like you."
I felt my merged consciousness split with indecision. Viktor wanted to use this information strategically. The Devourer wanted to consume the children immediately before they became too powerful.
"How long?" I asked.
"Hours," Luna gasped. "Maybe less. The trauma of watching me die will trigger the final transformation."
She was right. I could already see changes beginning in the three siblings. Their power signatures were shifting, becoming something beyond supernatural. Something cosmically fundamental.
"Then I'll kill them now," I decided.
"No," Luna said with her final breath. "You'll try. But they're protected by something you can't consume."
"What?"
"Love," she whispered, and died.
Her body crumbled to dust, but her final words echoed in my mind. Love. The one force I'd never understood, never been able to touch.
I looked at the three Castellano children, seeing them clearly for the first time. Not just as prey, but as the universe's last hope against everything I represented.
"This changes nothing," I announced. "I'll devour them before their power awakens."
But even as I said it, I could see the transformation accelerating. Aria's eyes were beginning to glow with starlight. Alessandro's form was shifting between solid matter and pure energy. Elena was starting to phase in and out of multiple dimensions.
The awakening had begun.
And somewhere in the distance, I heard something that made my merged consciousness tremble with unfamiliar emotion.
Sophia's laughter, echoing from the realm of the First Shadow.
"Too late, old friend," her voice whispered. "The cosmic children are awakening. And when they do, even you won't be able to stop what comes next."
