Chapter 145 Starlight Seal
Lyra: POV
We planned to stay in this village tonight. I dragged my exhausted body along with the others as we headed toward the village.
"You honor us, Lady Lyra," the elder waited ahead of us as we continued forward, smiling. "Our people want to thank you properly."
Villagers gathered around us, lighting strange shadow-crystal lanterns that pushed back the purple haze with their deep blue glow.
"We've prepared a special ritual to restore your strength," he explained, pointing to a small building. "The shadow-crystal bath washes away fatigue and recharges element-users."
Inside, women showed Lilian and me to stone tubs surrounded by pulsing shadow crystals.
Watch yourself, Stella whispered. These crystals help, but we're still in foreign territory.
I sank into the warm water, feeling shadow energy seep into my aching muscles. It was different from our water healing at home—darker, more primal, but undeniably effective. 4
As I relaxed, my thoughts drifted to Kael. Would his storm element have made tonight's sealing easier? Would his presence have given me more confidence?
"Missing someone?" Lilian asked softly from the tub beside mine, a knowing smile on her face.
"Just thinking about tomorrow," I lied, though poorly.
Later, we joined a feast in the village square. Altaris sat at the head table, deep in conversation with several elders. The villagers served their local specialties—shadow fish with iridescent scales, crystal-roasted meat that steamed with savory aromas, and goblets of deep blue fruit juice that tasted both sweet and tangy.
Nova perched on my shoulder, eyeing each dish. "No void contamination," she confirmed quietly. "They've been careful with their food sources."
I watched Lilian and Altaris from across the table. Their hands met briefly beneath the tablecloth, and the look they exchanged made my heart ache with a mixture of happiness for my friend and a hollow longing of my own.
As night deepened, musicians played haunting melodies while an elder told stories of Shadow Valley's past, speaking of times when starlight and shadow were one and the same force.
If that's true, I thought to Stella, maybe I could combine my starlight sealing with shadow elements.
Your sealing can resonate with other elements, Stella replied, but tread carefully with such experiments.
When my eyelids grew too heavy to keep open, we retired to our quarters, resting for tomorrow's challenge.
---
I woke to my Staff's warm glow. The night's rest had restored much of my energy, but looking outside revealed an unsettling sight—more villagers with worse purple marks than yesterday.
Nova fluttered in, her expression troubled. "Altaris's reinforcements haven't arrived. They seem to have encountered some delay."
"His father's doing, perhaps?" I wondered aloud.
Stella's voice rippled through my mind: The void rift is expanding. Energy fluctuations are up twenty percent since yesterday. We must act quickly.
With support delayed, Lilian and I set up a treatment station near the well, combining her water healing with my starlight purification. I noticed something interesting—my starlight not only treated symptoms but left temporary seal marks that slowed the void's spread.
A young mother approached, clutching an infant to her chest. Purple veins traced a spiderweb pattern across the baby's neck.
"Please," she whispered, tears streaming down her face. "He's stopped crying. I don't know if that's good or bad."
I placed my hands gently on the child, channeling purification energy. The marks faded slightly, but didn't disappear completely.
Altaris paced the edge of the village square, regularly checking the horizon. His usual composed demeanor had cracked, revealing anxiety beneath.
"My father may be interfering with our support," he admitted when I approached. "He never approved of cooperation with Star Crystal Territory."
"I can seal the rift temporarily," I told him. "As a Star-Chosen, I have that ability. But without Kael's storm element, it will be more difficult."
Lilian placed a hand on his shoulder, and I saw their dragon souls briefly shimmer in unison, a rare display of their strengthening bond.
Around mid-morning, Nova swooped down from her aerial patrol. "Riders approaching from the southwest!"
Six mages in Shadow Valley uniforms arrived, looking weary but determined. Their leader bowed to Altaris.
"Forgive the delay, Your Grace. The King required extensive reports on your activities. He did not prevent our coming, but... reduced our numbers."
I quickly briefed the mages on the void rift and my sealing plan. They nodded with understanding, though I caught the doubt in their eyes. Could a foreign dragon really accomplish what their shadow magic could not?
---
The void energy inside the cave was stronger now, pressing against the protective barrier my Staff automatically formed. Shadow Valley mages set up lighting and created shadow shields to mitigate the corruption's effects.
I directed everyone to position star-stones and crystals in a specific pattern around the rift, mentally adapting my design to compensate for the absence of Kael's stabilizing storm element.
Star-Chosen's sealing ability is your birthright, Stella reminded me. But without storm element stabilization, you'll need more precise control.
Standing at the center of the array, I raised the Tidesong Staff high, remembering Kael's breathing techniques. I focused on pulling the sealing energy from deep within my core, channeling it through the Staff's amplifying crystal.
Silver-blue light erupted from the tip, pushing against the rift's purple energy. I could feel Stella synchronizing completely with me: We are one, Lyra. Let the starlight sealing flow through us.
The void rift fought back, releasing energy waves that shook the ground. Rocks tumbled from the ceiling as my strength began to drain rapidly. My breathing grew labored, and I thought fleetingly how much easier this would be with Kael beside me.
"Hold on, Lyra!" Lilian stood behind me, using water element to cool my overheating body. "You can do this!"
Halfway through the sealing process, my vision began to darken at the edges. The Tidesong Staff's light flickered slightly.
Your sealing energy is depleting too quickly, Stella warned. You must rest or risk permanent damage.
Lilian and Altaris helped me away from the center of the array. The mages maintained temporary barriers, though they too looked drained.
I gulped down a restoration potion, closing my eyes to meditate and recover energy. For just an instant, I felt a weak connection to Kael, as if he sensed my struggle from wherever he was.
After a brief rest, I returned to the array's center. "I won't let you down," I promised everyone, including myself.
Remembering Kael's teachings, I adjusted my breathing and found a more efficient pathway to channel my starlight sealing energy.
"Altaris, direct your shadow element into the crystals at the edge of the array. It will help stabilize my seal."
The Tidesong Staff blazed with renewed light as the star-stones activated in sequence, creating a complex sealing network. I felt my Star-Chosen birthright fully manifest, guiding starlight energy to compress the void rift. The purple glow diminished bit by bit.
With a final surge, I drove the Staff into the ground. Sealing energy rippled outward, completely closing the rift.
---
The purple glow in the cave faded entirely, replaced by the silver-blue light of my Tidesong Staff. Exhaustion hit me like a physical blow, and my legs trembled with the effort to remain standing. The Staff became my only support.
Your sealing ability was stronger than I anticipated, Stella commented with pride. But the energy drain was also greater. You need complete rest to recover.
The Shadow Valley mages examined the seal's integrity, their expressions shifting from skepticism to surprise. "It's holding," one confirmed. "This is remarkable work, though it will need maintenance."
Altaris and his mages documented the sealing site. "This seal is strong, but not permanent," he cautioned.
Lilian checked my condition, her face creased with worry. "You've drained yourself dangerously low, Lyra."
I insisted on walking out of the cave under my own power, desperate to see if the environment had improved. "I need to check on the villagers."
Nova flew excited circles around my head. "The plants around the cave are already showing signs of recovery! The purple crystals are receding!"
At the village entrance, people gathered to welcome us back, tears of relief in many eyes. I struggled to stay conscious, wanting to witness the results of our work.
The village elder reported that the purple tinge in the well water had begun to fade, and children's symptoms were already showing improvement.
I smiled weakly, nodding. Then suddenly, intense dizziness overwhelmed me. In my mind, I called Kael's name.
As I raised my hand in a final reassuring wave to the villagers, darkness rushed in from all sides. I felt the Tidesong Staff slip from my grasp, hitting the ground with a crystalline ring.
Lilian's panicked cry of "Lyra!" and Altaris's commanding "Find a healer immediately!" barely registered.
Rest now, my Star-Chosen dragon, Stella's voice soothed as consciousness slipped away. You've done well. He would be proud, too.
