Chapter 16: The Oath of Thorns
Aria's fingers trembled as she set down her guitar. The last echoes of her defiant melody faded, leaving behind a heavy silence. Despite her brave words to Thorne, doubt gnawed at her resolve.
She paced the confines of her chamber, mind racing. The image of Melody trapped in that tower of thorns haunted her. What if she failed the final trial? What if her sister suffered even more because of her stubbornness?
A soft chime broke through her spiraling thoughts. A shimmering portal appeared, revealing a familiar face.
"Allegra," Aria breathed, relief washing over her at the sight of her Seelie ally.
The faerie's emerald eyes were filled with concern. "I sensed your turmoil, Aria. Thorne's offer weighs heavily on you, doesn't it?"
Aria nodded, sinking onto the moss-covered bed. "I told him no, but... I'm not sure I made the right choice."
Allegra perched beside her, wings shimmering like gossamer. "Doubts are natural, especially in Faerie where every choice carries consequences. Tell me, what's truly driving your hesitation?"
"Melody," Aria whispered. "Every moment she spends in that tower... I can't bear the thought of her suffering because I was too proud to accept Thorne's deal."
Allegra's expression softened. "Your love for your sister is admirable. But consider this – would Melody want you to sacrifice yourself for her freedom?"
The question struck Aria like a physical blow. She thought of Melody's fierce protectiveness, her stubborn determination. "No," she admitted. "She'd probably be furious with me for even considering it."
"Precisely," Allegra said. "And there's more at stake here than just Melody's freedom. The balance between our realms hangs in the balance. Your actions could have far-reaching consequences."
Aria stood, restless energy coursing through her. "But what if I fail the final trial? What if all of this was for nothing?"
Allegra rose, placing a gentle hand on Aria's shoulder. "The future is never certain, Aria. But I've seen your strength, your determination. You've come so far already. Have faith in yourself."
As Allegra's words sank in, a knock sounded at the chamber door. Puck entered, his ancient eyes filled with urgency.
"Forgive the intrusion," he said, bowing slightly to Allegra. "But I bring news that may change everything."
Aria's heart raced. "What is it, Puck?"
The small faerie's expression was grim. "I've discovered Thorne's true plans. If you complete the trials and win your sister's freedom, he intends to keep you here by force. He believes your power is too great to let go."
The revelation hit Aria like a tidal wave. "He can't do that," she protested. "It goes against the rules of the trials!"
Allegra's eyes flashed with anger. "Thorne has always played by his own rules. This is a dangerous game he's playing."
Puck nodded solemnly. "Indeed. And there's more. The final trial... it's designed to be impossible. No mortal has ever survived it."
Silence fell over the chamber as the weight of Puck's words sank in. Aria's mind reeled, trying to process this new information.
"So, either way, I lose," she said quietly. "If I take Thorne's deal, I'm trapped here for who knows how long. If I attempt the final trial, I'll likely die. And Thorne wins regardless."
Allegra's wings fluttered in agitation. "It seems he's woven quite the web around you, Aria. But remember, in Faerie, there are always loopholes. We just need to find the right one."
Aria paced the room, her thoughts churning. "Wait," she said suddenly. "Thorne's original offer – one year of service in exchange for Melody's freedom. What if... what if we could modify those terms?"
Puck's eyebrows rose. "Modify a Fae bargain? It's risky, but not unheard of. What did you have in mind?"
"What if I could negotiate for more than just Melody's freedom?" Aria's voice grew stronger as the idea took shape. "What if I could secure the release of all the human captives, including Detective Reeves?"
Allegra's eyes widened. "Ambitious, but not impossible. Thorne wants you badly enough that he might agree to expanded terms."
Puck stroked his chin thoughtfully. "It could work, but we'd need ironclad wording to prevent Thorne from twisting the agreement. And you'd still be bound to him for a year, Aria. Are you prepared for that?"
Aria took a deep breath, weighing her options. The thought of spending a year in Thorne's service chilled her to the bone. But if it meant freeing Melody and the others...
"I think I have to be," she said quietly. "But I want your help drafting the terms. We need to make sure there are no loopholes Thorne can exploit."
Allegra nodded, a fierce pride shining in her eyes. "You've grown so much, Aria. We'll stand with you through this."
As they worked to craft the perfect agreement, Aria felt a strange mix of dread and determination settle over her. This wasn't the outcome she had hoped for, but it was a chance to save lives. To make a difference.
Hours passed as they debated every word, every possible interpretation. Finally, as the ever-present twilight deepened to a rich purple, Aria felt ready.
"It's time," she said, her voice steady despite the fear coiling in her stomach. "Puck, Allegra... thank you. For everything."
Puck bowed low. "May the stars guide your path, Aria Blackwood."
Allegra embraced her fiercely. "Remember, you carry the strength of both worlds within you. Don't let Thorne make you forget that."
With a deep breath, Aria spoke into the air. "Prince Thorne, I'm ready to discuss your offer."
The air shimmered, and Thorne appeared before her, his violet eyes gleaming with triumph. "I knew you'd come around, my dear. Have you finally seen reason?"
Aria met his gaze steadily. "I have a counter-proposal, Thorne. One year of service to you, as your personal musician. In exchange, you will immediately release Melody, Detective Reeves, and all other human captives currently held in Faerie. They will be returned to the mortal realm unharmed, with no memory of their time here."
Thorne's eyebrows rose. "My, my. You aim high, don't you? And what makes you think I'd agree to such generous terms?"
"Because you want me," Aria said bluntly. "My power, my music. This way, you get what you want without resorting to force or trickery. One year of willing service, Thorne. No games, no attempts to escape. But only if all the humans go free."
The Unseelie prince circled her slowly, considering. "Intriguing. But tell me, Aria, what's to stop me from simply taking what I want? You're in my realm, after all."
Aria's heart raced, but she kept her voice steady. "Because you know as well as I do that coerced power is never as strong as that given freely. You want my music at its fullest potential. This is the only way to get it."
A slow smile spread across Thorne's face. "You continue to surprise me, Aria Blackwood. Very well, I accept your terms. Shall we seal our bargain?"
Aria nodded, extending her hand. "By blood and oath, let it be done."
Thorne's smile turned predatory as he produced a gleaming silver dagger. With a quick motion, he pricked both their palms. As their blood mingled, Aria felt a surge of magic course through her.
"I, Prince Thorne of the Unseelie Court, do hereby swear to release all human captives currently held in Faerie, returning them unharmed and without memory to the mortal realm. This I swear, in exchange for one year of willing service from Aria Blackwood as my personal musician."
Aria took a deep breath, sealing her fate. "And I, Aria Blackwood, do swear to serve Prince Thorne of the Unseelie Court as his personal musician for the span of one year. This I swear, in exchange for the freedom of all human captives as stated."
A pulse of magic sealed their words, binding them in an unbreakable oath. Aria felt the weight of it settle over her, a constant reminder of the bargain she had struck.
Thorne's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. "Well done, my dear. I do believe this will be a most... interesting year."
As the prince vanished, presumably to begin fulfilling his end of the bargain, Aria sank to her knees. The enormity of what she had done crashed over her.
Melody would be safe. Detective Reeves and the others would go free. But at what cost to herself?
As tears began to fall, Aria reached for her guitar. The melody that flowed from her fingers was bittersweet – a lament for the freedom she had sacrificed, and a tentative hope for the year that lay ahead.
For in this realm of eternal twilight, where bargains held the weight of law, Aria Blackwood had bound herself to the very heart of Faerie. And only time would tell what transformations awaited her in the Unseelie Court.
