Chapter 7 Chapter 7

Chapter 7 Chapter 7
Had to make a stop at the hall closet to find shoes. I pulled out my boring low heel dress boots. Sadly, they wouldn’t do much to make me look less like a hobbit standing next to him. Glancing his way while I pulled on my boots I asked” So, what’s the word?”

“Jeremiah had already notified them. Talked to my commander and the case is officially assigned to us. We are under strict orders to keep our investigation quiet. They don’t want this leaking until we have some details. “Connor gave me a look. Like he expected me to run to TMZ or something. I gave him my best innocent look. Widen my eyes as far as I could. Sunny smile, no fangs. “They haven’t started the autopsy yet. ME is waiting on us. “

We stood up and just as we slipped on our jackets my phone belted out "Single Ladies", its song for unknown callers.

“You have got to change that ringtone. It’s annoying.” My partner grumbled.

“So why would I change it?” I asked as I fished my phone out of my pocket. Sending a satisfied smile at

Connor when I recognized the number, I answered.  “Cole Pearson.”

“Hi Miss Pearson. This is Tristan Smith.  You tackled me naked earlier by the cemetery? Well, you were naked. I was dressed. But, um, that’s not why I’m calling. I’d like to take you up on your offer. I want to know about what I am and where I come from.  When would be convenient for us to get together?” Tristan asked politely and obviously nervous. How refreshing. A youngin' with manners. Perhaps everything I'd heard about his generation wasn't true. I'd have to wait see if his answer to everything was "that's what Google's for.”

“Hopefully now works for you. About three houses down from you there’s a kid’s playhouse in the backyard call me when you are inside it. You’ll know it’s the right one if it’s got a creepy little pink tea set and smells like Connor and me.” I ended the call and looked at my partner. “This could get interesting.

Do you think the morgue is the best place for his first field trip?”

“He’s a wolf. Dead bodies shouldn’t bother him." Connor seemed unconcerned. After making sure there was plenty of food and water out, I walked over to check if the pet door was unlocked. I did not want to come home to find any presents from Bask. I’ve seen what he leaves in the woods.

“I got twenty that says he pukes.” I responded as my phone rang again. Reaching up I ripped open another portal with the same destination as the previous one. I stuck my head through it and found myself face to face with a surprised pup. Smiling I said" Ready to fall through the looking glass?"

He swallowed a couple of times and then nodded his head before he stepped through. Once he was standing in my living room, I closed the portal and sealed it. Didn't want to risk anyone being able to sneak under my wards. Tristan was silent while he took in his surroundings. His eyes widen when they fell on my weapons room. Oops. Maybe I should have closed that door. It was originally an office with double French doors built into the staircase leading into the living room. Seeing how I have a laptop, tablet, and smartphone, I don't need a home office. Plus, I detest paperwork. Not letting any of the evil vile filth into my house. All my bills were electronic. Which reminds, when was the last time I checked the mailbox?  If you don't check it often enough the box gets full. Then, the post office takes your mail and holds it hostage. Which is bad enough, but, they won't start delivering again until you go down there. Always happens when I'm expecting something. Bastards.

So, I turned the office into a storage room. Mostly weapons. Swords, crossbows, knives, a few different kinds of guns, and even an assortment of axes. Never know what you might find yourself in need of. There's magical weaponry in there too. But, it wouldn't be as obvious to an untrained wolf. There was a candle in there that when lit would render the whole room unconscious. I'd spent months trying to figure out how to block its magic. Finally created a spell that would work. KInda. Unfortunately it had some odd lingering side effects.

"So, um, where are we?” Tristan asked while shuffling his feet. Wow. This kid really needed to get out more. The smell of his nerves was clogging my nose. Giving him my biggest Elly Mae Clampett smile I drawled out "Welcome to Texas kid.”

"We need to get going. This case is time sensitive. The council will be back in session in a few days and will be demanding answers.” Connor was looking at his phone. From the angle I couldn't tell if it was text, email, or naked pictures of the Disney princesses.

"They'll be demanding answers from you, not me." I scoffed. "They only demand things from me when they want to get smitted."

"Don't you answer to the council? My dad says all the beings are under their thumbs." Tristan asked hesitantly. He was staring at the floor.

"I'm under the thumb of a group you have never heard of.” I plastered a friendly smile on my face to hide my urge to giggle as I asked the pup "Have you ever seen a dead body?"

Without waiting for his response, I reached out and ripped a portal to the morgue.
