Chapter 47 Epilogue
There was momentary darkness between when my body lost consciousness and my spirit materialized above my body. Which was just lying there. Defenseless, unprotected, and with a bullet hole in the ass of my favorite black leather pants. Man! They had pockets and strategically placed padding. At least the female vamp that had been sneaking up on me was snoozing beside me with a bullet hole in her chest.
A magic approached with an evil grin on his dark face and a fire ball in his hand. The bastard was going to incinerate me! Frantically I tried to remember how many hits my jacket had absorbed. I could remember at least two. But, there could have been more. I couldn’t go out like this! Helpless. Unconscious. Wasn’t getting shot in the ass and knocked out by my own magic enough of an indignity? The grin disappeared as a ball of blue fire hit him in the chest. He fell to the ground shrieking. Way to go partner! Yes! I’d so have to get him something to say thank you. Maybe a nice yoga instructor.
Since I was now officially out of the battle, I took a moment to look around. There were piles of ash and bodies of magics and vampires snoozing everywhere. It would appear that Tristan was a natural as a sniper. Frankie Hays was sleeping soundly if not peacefully a few feet from me. Two wolves were helping to corral the few remaining members of the posse for Connor and Tristan to pick off. The pure white wolf was standing guard over Thomas. I hoped that meant he was alive. He was too far away for me to tell and my spirt could only move a foot or so from my body.
Finally the last bad guy fell and the boys came to check on me. Tristan seemed unharmed but, Connor was favoring his right side. Someone must have gotten a hold of him.
“You shot her in the ass.” Connor said with a combination of disbelief and glee. He pulled out his phone to snap a few pics. He was so going to pay for that! Cancel the yoga instructor.
“It was an accident! I was trying to get the blonde that was behind her.” I could see the whites of the pup’s eyes. Good. He seemed to understand he had been very bad. I was still going to beat him with a rolled up newspaper later.
After Connor was done taking pictures he called his boss to give him an update. Movement by Thomas caught my eye. The three wolves still standing blurred from furry to human. Gently one of them started examining their boss’s injuries while the one that had been pure white headed our way. Once she was close enough I could see it was the deputy that had locked me in the cell earlier. I envied her. Her uniform looked perfectly starched with no bullet hole in the ass. I slid a dark look at the pup. He was going to pay.
“Everyone all right?” She asked the boys while looking down at me. Come on Connor. Do something! Don’t let people see me like this. It’s not dignified. But did he? No. He just paused his conversation long enough to answer her.
“We’re good.” My partner nodded at me. “She’s gonna be cranky, but, she’ll be all right. How’s Thomas?”
“He’ll be ok. We think it’s just a couple of broken ribs and probably a concussion.” She threw a regretfully look towards the other wolves. “One of the vamps got a hold of me and he charged in to save me. Never fought magics and vamps for real before. “
“It was my first time too.” Tristan reassured her when Connor went back to his phone call. She batted her chocolate colored eyes at him while running a hand through her honey colored hair.
“We didn’t get introduced earlier. I’m Yvette Moon.” She held out a petite hand which Tristan shook firmly.
“Tristan Smith-er-Lobo.”
“You’re an excellent shot, Tristan Lobo.” More eye batting. ”Where did you learn to shoot?”
“Duck hunt. Original NES.” That gave her pause. Me too. I didn’t know anyone still played that. Besides me. Connor put his phone away when he finished his call before walking over to Frankie Hays. He pulled his cuffs from their holster on his belt and slapped them on the unconscious vamp. Connor carried special cuffs that were enchanted to block all magic from being used. They also had an extra spell laid on them to prevent vamps from being able to mist. While I watched Connor cuff the mobster, techno music blared from the pups pocket. Don’t say you want me. Don’t say you need me. Don’t say you love me. It’s understood. Oh shit. Tristan pulled MY phone out of his pocket. That wasn’t one of my tones. To make matters worse, Connor grabbed the phone and answered it.
“She’s fine. Took down Frankie Hays before she got hit with a knock out bullet. Don’t worry, I got some good pics.” Oh if only my consciousness could shoot fire balls! I was too far away to hear the voice on the other end said but, I could hear enough to know the voice was husky and Irish. Connor ended the call before I could will myself back into my body. He might not be bleeding now but, he would be as soon as I got back in my body!
“All right boys and girls. Let’s get our wounded off the field. CSU and a bunch of guys in suits are on their way. Tristan give me a hand with Cole.” The boys bent over and each of them got a shoulder under my arms and started dragging me to the edge of the clearing.
Oh come on now! Just pick me up and carry me off Rhett Butler style! I’d even settle for fireman style.
You’re scuffing my favorite boots! Seriously! Two big strong men and you have to drag me?! That’s it. I’m going after both of them. You know, just as soon as I got back in my body and could actually do something to them.
“Do you think she’ll forgive me?” Tristan asked uncertainly. Smart boy. He was beginning to worry. Maybe he could hear my thoughts.
“Oh, yeah, Cole’s known for her forgiving nature.” My partner answered with sarcasm dripping from every word.
“So that’s a no to the forgiveness?”
“She’s going to skin you and turn you into a rug.” The boys reached the edge of the clearing, still dragging my toes along the dirt. Man. My boots! They were quiet as they laid me down and the wolves carefully brought Thomas over.
Tristan leaned over to brush a few strands of hair out of my face. “I’d look gorgeous on the floor of her room.”
