Chapter 21
She had expected Cressida to make things difficult for her–but instead, she found a kindred spirit.
“Red,” Cressida said sternly, “now that you two are almost married, you’d better treat her right. If I ever find out you’ve mistreated Lavender, don’t blame me for throwing you out of this family.”
If it had been anyone else, Red would’ve thrown them out without hesitation.
But this was his mother.
He chuckled and replied, “Don’t worry, mom. In my world, it’s either marriage or widowhood. Divorce isn’t an option.”
Then, Cressida personally took Lavender’s hand and led her to the center of the room. In front of everyone, she made an official announcement.
“From this day forward, Lavender is my daughter–in–law and the lady of the Rasltons. Everyone, show her the same respect you show me.”
With Cressida’s full support, no one in the estate dared to look down on Lavender
anymore.
Cressida disliked noisy social events, so once she’d made her statement and secured Lavender’s position, the older woman quietly left.
The remaining guests were mostly distant relatives of the Red, all polite and respectful toward Lavender.
The party didn’t end until after 10 p.m. Since the estate was far from their own home, Lavender and Red decided to spend the night there.
After showering, Lavender was just about to go downstairs for a glass of milk to help her sleep when a voice suddenly popped up behind her, making her jump.
“Avy!”
Her arm went weak as she turned around, heart still racing, to see Beige grinning playfully.
“Beige,” she scolded gently, “you nearly scared me to death. It’s late at night!”
Beige stuck out her tongue, mischievous. “Well, you were too busy earlier! We didn’t get a moment alone. Now that everyone’s gone, I finally get to have a heart–to–heart with you.”
Lavender glanced at the clock–it was almost midnight.
“Beige, whatever it is, let’s talk tomorrow. It’s really late, and you should rest too.”
She was just about to head back to her room when Beige caught her by the arm.
“Wait, Avy–don’t go just yet. This is important. It’s about Cyanne!”
The moment she heard that name, Avy paused. Her curiosity was piqued.
“What about her?”

Beige led her to a nearby couch. Once they were seated, she began speaking in a low
voice.
“I’ve heard a bit about your story–how Cyanne stole your place as your real parents‘ daughter and even tried to wreck your marriage. What a horrible woman! She deserves the
worst!
“Actually, I met her once while I was in Paris. You wouldn’t believe the kind of stuff she was
up to!
“She was seeing this super wealthy guy–but it turned out he had a wife. When the girl found out, she chased Cyanne down and tried to beat her up!
“After that, she went looking for her next sugar daddy. I even heard she had surgery to restore her virginity.”
Lavender was stunned. Her worldview felt like it had been turned upside down.
She’d long suspected Cyanne hadn’t exactly been living a clean life outside the states–but Lavender never imagined it had sunk to this level.
“And then?”
“Well,” Beige continued, “Cyanne’s ambition knows no bounds. She only went after successful men. But the thing is–guys like that? They either just want to mess around, or they already have families. At best, she was just someone’s mistress.
“Maybe she got tired of playing around out there, so she came back home looking for someone dumb enough to settle down with her–and would you believe it, she actually found one.
“Seriously, Avy, was your ex–husband brain–dead? Letting go of someone like you for…. her?”
Just thinking about it made Beige shiver with disgust. She shook her head in disbelief. Meanwhile, Lavender let out a soft, bitter laugh. “Desmond probably has no idea what she was really up to in Paris.”
Cyanne had always been good at pretending. Of course she wouldn’t have told Desmond
the truth.
Even back then, when she left the states, she’d made up some excuse about being young and wanting to study abroad to ‘grow.‘
It was a pathetic excuse, really. But Desmond bought it.
“Tch, then your ex is just another sucker. Oh–and one more thing…”
Before Beige could finish her sentence, her ear was suddenly tugged from the side.
“Beige, do you have nothing better to do?”
