Chapter 162: Wanted by the Alpha Brothers
We got the witch's bodies off of our territory and buried them in an open field that wasn't too far away. And Asher and I cleaned up a little bit before we opened the shelter and let everyone out. There were some very tearful eyes as those women knew that their mates were killed. And I did my best to comfort them. But there was nothing that could help the loss of a mate. And Zara and Freya came out with the kids.
Asher and I took the kids so they could go find Beau and Cole and Fiona was the last one to come out. She was looking really sullen and upset. I knew that there was more going on with her than she was letting on. People had blamed her in the shelter for their mates deaths. Saying that she bought the witch's here. I knew that it wasn't the case. I knew that everything they said was out of grief. They needed someone to blame and she was the easiest target.
I comfort Fiona in the house until Axel arrives but I don't tell him what happened. Fiona didn't even tell me what happened. It was so vivid in her mind that I couldn't help but see it. But she could tell Axel if she really wanted to. It was up to her.
Connor wouldn't leave my side that night and we decided to bring Connor and the two bassinets into our bedroom so that we could all sleep in there together. As soon as Connor was asleep Asher and I went for a shower and then got into bed with Connor between us.
"You know what you did tonight was really stupid." Asher says.
"I know. But like I said, I always have a plan." I say.
"When did you put the knife there?" He asked.
"Earlier today. And it wasn't just that tree. I put weapons in a few different trees. It was just depending on which one I was closest to." I say.
" Well, there's no getting around you." He says.
"I hope people remember that." I say.
"People will definitely remember that. You're not to be messed with." He says.
"No one fucks with my family and gets away with it. And Axel is as much of our family as your brothers are." I say.
"I know that." He says.
The following morning we woke up to a completely different world. We were woken up by someone banging on the bedroom door so Asher got up to answer it and it was Cole. He had today's newspaper in his hand.
"There were reporters outside the border last night." He says and I jumped up really quickly when I heard that.
I raced over and saw photos on the front cover of us battling the witches. We turned the page and the story covered the first five pages of the paper.
"How the hell did we not notice them?" I asked.
"We were too preoccupied with the witches." Asher says.
"Now the world knows about witches. And it's all going to come back on us." I say.
"The witch's council will make it come back on us. Yes." Asher says.
"These bastard humans. Why the hell can't they just stay the hell away." I yelled.
"Momma." I heard behind me. I turned around and Connor was sitting up rubbing his eyes.
"Hi baby. Sorry I yelled. I didn't mean to." I say walking over to him.
"You're sad." He says, looking at me.
"No baby. I'm not sad. Just a little angry that I had to spend so much time away from you last night. But that won't happen again." I say sitting on the bed and putting him on my lap. He snuggled in really close to cuddle with me. Something that he hadn't gotten a chance to do in a while. And then one of the babies woke up so Asher went to the bassinet and picked up Stella.
"What are we going to do?" Cole asked.
"I'll reach out to the witch's council and see where they stand on the matter. That's all I can do. They've been exposed." Asher says.
" But that's not our fault. They attacked us." I say.
"Yeah. And it clearly shows that here in the paper. So the council won't be able to deny it. But they will probably want to meet with us." Asher says.
"Is that a good idea? Could we possibly be walking into a trap?" I asked.
"No. The council wouldn't do that. They have a reputation to uphold." Asher says.
"Yeah. So did Grayson." I reminded him.
"We'll make sure that you're protected." Cole says.
"I'm not leaving my kids again." I say.
"We'll make the meeting close. On the other side of the border. There's an abandoned building not too far from here. I'll make the meeting take place there." Asher says.
"Alright." I say.
After I fed the twins and I bathed all three of the kids we went downstairs and Asher, Connor and I got something to eat. The rest of our immediate family were in the dining room and we were making small talk and not really addressing the bigger issues. I didn't want to think about the bigger issues. I just wanted life to get back to normal. It feels like it's been ages since it's been normal.
Things had been such a mess for us lately that I didn't really know which way was up right now.
