Chapter 193: One Year Later

Ava's POV

The soft cries of a newborn filled the hospital room as Jane cradled her daughter against her chest, tears of joy streaming down her face.

Little Lily was absolutely perfect—tiny pink fingers, the sweetest button nose.

"She's beautiful," I whispered, my own eyes welling up as I watched my best friend become a mother. "Look at those little hands!"

Richard stood quietly beside me, and I felt him gently adjust his jacket around my shoulders—I hadn't even realized it had slipped. His arm wrapped protectively around my waist, his thumb tracing soothing circles through the fabric as we admired the newest addition to Jane and David's family.

When he noticed me getting emotional, he discreetly handed me a tissue from his pocket, somehow always prepared for moments like these.

"Would you like to hold her?" Jane asked, her voice still shaky with emotion.

My heart skipped as David carefully transferred the tiny bundle into my arms. Richard immediately stepped closer, his hand hovering protectively near my elbow to steady me, while his other hand gently supported my back.

Lily was so light, so fragile, and when she opened her eyes and looked up at me with that unfocused newborn gaze, I felt something shift inside my chest.

"Hi there, sweet girl," I cooed softly, gently rocking her. "You're going to be so loved."

I felt Richard's gentle touch as he carefully adjusted the baby blanket around Lily, making sure she was properly covered.

When I glanced up at him, I found him watching us with an expression I'd never seen before—tender, longing, and something deeper that made my breath catch. His eyes were soft and warm as they moved between me and the baby.

"She likes you," he murmured quietly, reaching out to gently stroke Lily's tiny cheek with one finger.

The gesture was so careful, so reverent, that it made my heart flutter. When Lily made a small sound, Richard instinctively moved even closer, creating a protective cocoon around us both.

"Look how natural you are with her," Jane said with a knowing smile. "You're going to make an amazing mom someday, Ava."

I felt Richard's hand tighten slightly on my waist, his other hand coming up to gently brush a strand of hair from my face as I focused on the baby. When I looked up at him again, that intense look was still there, but now mixed with something that looked almost like determination.

After we said our goodbyes and congratulations, Richard was unusually quiet during the drive home. He'd helped me into the car with extra care, adjusting my seatbelt and making sure I was comfortable before starting the engine. His hand rested on my thigh as he drove, thumb tracing absent patterns, but I could sense something was on his mind.

"Penny for your thoughts?" I asked softly, covering his hand with mine.

He glanced over at me with a small smile, briefly lifting our joined hands to press a soft kiss to my knuckles before returning his attention to the road. "Just... seeing you with Lily today. You were incredible."

"She's such a sweet baby," I said, warmth spreading through my chest at the memory. "Did you see how tiny her fingers were?"

"I saw how you looked at her," Richard said quietly, pulling into our driveway. "How you held her like she was the most precious thing in the world." He parked and immediately came around to open my door, offering his hand to help me out—a gesture that had become second nature to him.

Something in his tone made me turn to study his profile. "Richard?"

Instead of answering, he gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering on my cheek. "Ava, can we... can we take a walk? There's something I want to talk to you about."

My heart started beating faster at the serious tone in his voice, but I nodded. "Of course."

The moment we stepped outside, Richard noticed me shiver slightly in the evening air. Without hesitation, he shrugged off his jacket and draped it around my shoulders, pulling it snug and making sure I was warm. His hands lingered on my shoulders for a moment before taking my hand, fingers intertwining naturally.

We walked in comfortable silence for a few minutes, Richard occasionally guiding me around puddles or uneven pavement with gentle touches, until he led me to a bench overlooking a small pond. He sat down first, then helped me settle beside him, immediately wrapping his arm around me and pulling me close to his warmth.

"Ava," Richard began, his voice slightly unsteady as he turned to face me, his free hand coming up to cup my cheek. "This past year with you has been... it's been everything I never knew I wanted."

I felt my breath catch at the emotion in his voice, the way his thumb was stroking my cheekbone with infinite tenderness.

"You've changed my life in ways I can't even begin to explain," he continued, his other hand finding mine and bringing it to his lips for a soft kiss. "You've made me braver, happier, more myself than I ever thought possible."

"Richard..." I whispered, my heart pounding as I began to suspect where this was going.

"Seeing you today, holding Lily, watching how gentle and loving you were..." He paused, taking a shaky breath while his hands cradled my face like I was made of something precious. "I couldn't stop thinking about our future. About the family we could have together, the life we could build."

Suddenly, he was sliding off the bench, but not before making sure I was steady and comfortable. He dropped to one knee in front of me, and my hands flew to my mouth as he pulled out a small velvet box with trembling fingers.

"Ava," he said, his voice thick with emotion, "I love you more than I ever thought it was possible to love someone. You're my best friend, my safe place, my everything." His free hand found mine, thumb stroking over my knuckles in that familiar, comforting way. "Will you marry me?"

He opened the box to reveal the most beautiful ring I'd ever seen—a classic solitaire that caught the fading sunlight and threw tiny rainbows across his nervous face.

Tears were streaming down my cheeks as I looked down at this incredible man who had become my whole world. Richard, who was usually so shy and reserved, was here pouring his heart out, his hands trembling slightly as he waited for my answer.

"Yes," I whispered, then louder, "Yes, of course, yes!"

The relief and joy that flooded his face was absolutely radiant. With infinite care, he took my left hand and slipped the ring onto my finger, his touch so gentle it was like a whisper. It fit perfectly, and I realized he must have been planning this for a while.

He stood and immediately pulled me into his arms, one hand cradling the back of my head while the other wrapped securely around my waist. "I love you so much," I said through my tears as he held me like I was the most precious thing in his world.

"I love you too," he murmured against my hair, pressing soft kisses to the top of my head. "I was so nervous. I've been carrying that ring around for two weeks, waiting for the right moment."

As we walked home, Richard kept me tucked securely against his side, his jacket still wrapped around my shoulders. Every few steps, he'd press a gentle kiss to my temple or squeeze my hand, as if he couldn't quite believe this was real. When I stumbled slightly on an uneven sidewalk, his arm immediately tightened around me, steadying me before I could even lose my balance.

"So," I said teasingly, "I guess we'll have something pretty exciting to tell Jane and David when we visit tomorrow."

Richard chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest where my head rested against his shoulder. "I have a feeling Jane's going to take full credit for this. She'll probably say holding Lily was what finally gave me the courage to propose."

"Was it?" I asked curiously.

He stopped walking and turned to face me, his hands coming up to frame my face with that tender touch that never failed to make my heart skip. "Partly," he admitted, his thumbs stroking my cheekbones. "But mostly it was just... I couldn't wait another day to start forever with you."

And as he kissed me again under the streetlights, his arms wrapped protectively around me, I knew that whatever the future held—babies, marriage, growing old together—it was going to be absolutely beautiful with someone who loved me so completely, so carefully, so perfectly.
