Chapter 14: It's over

Mark's face fell after hearing the finality in his wife's tone. One thing was evident, she was tired of being there for him and h was devastated by that realization, all he ever wanted was for both of them to be in perfect health and peace, but as it stood, it seemed as though it was such a far-fetched idea that could never come to materialization. Filled with despair, he watched her walk away from him.

" Please give me the account number again." She demanded and typed the digits into her phone. In a split second she had transferred the money. " I don't think you know how this feels." She spat and walked towards her parents who were sitting straight by this time.

" I'm sorry." He whispered into thin air, he watched them rise and slowly exit the building. He was about to complain but he held his peace. If he did,the issue was going to escalate and he wouldn't want that at all.

He had to wait till morning before flagging down a cab to take him to his in-laws ' mansion. He was tired when the house approached in his vision. What wouldn't he give to make sure that he is free from these people? I mean who would have thought that he would be in this state?

Fuck fate and time and season. It wasn't someone like him that stuff like this was supposed to happen to, I mean how was he expected to survive by the taunting of his in-laws, he already felt terrible, staying with them added more salt to the injury.

He exhaled deeply when he alighted from the cab. He proceeded into the house and the cab driver called him, " Hello, sir, you've not paid me!"

"Mark halted and smacked his forehead, how could he have forgotten that he had to pay the cab driver?

" You are nothing but a piece of trash." Mrs Richard's voice resounded in his ears leaving him thinking about how to live his life. Her words cut him deep to the bone no matter how he tried to hide it.

"Please wait a bit, let me quickly collect some money from my wife." He said, he knew that he was going to be insulted but he would suck it up because he needed money and being proud would not give it to him.

"Gosh, I hate talking to people who do not listen. I warned you severally not to marry this guy but what did you do? Yo went ahead to marry him, blinded by the influence of a stupid love. Now, look where it got you." Mrs. Richard said mockingly, " Nowhere. I guess you are angry now, although I see it as a senseless move. When you had the chance to reject him you said no, now see your life." She grinned.

" Mom, I've heard this sermon a million times. Do I regret my actions? Yes, I don't appreciate you taking the pains of saying the same thing every time. It makes me angry." Lacey replied, she had heard this lecture when they returned from the hospital a few hours ago, now that she came downstairs for dinner again her mother wouldn't spare her the details.

Mrs. Richard waved her hands in front of her daughter's face, " I won't make the same mistake I made before. Instead of knocking some sense into your head, I allowed you to have your freedom as a child. Now that you have shown that you can't be trusted with making decisions about your life, I guess I better move in then. Or what do you think?" She asked Lacey.

" If I say no, will you go away?" Lacey replied.

" No"

Lacey sighed and Mr. Richard rolled his eyes, " I wonder why you can't leave the kids be,it's their life after all,"

" Doesn't mean I have no say, I'll have you know that I have plenty of say in this discussion, and I would not allow you to make her life miserable like you did the first time." Mrs. Richard said, her eyes blazing furiously as she stared at her husband.

Mr. Richard sighed, there was no winning with her, she was bound to always have something else to say. " I've told you to allow sleeping dogs to lie. You don't allow our daughter to concentrate." He said. He would not be pushed aside like Mark allowed them to do to him.

"Why do you always take sides with that good-for-nothing guy?" She thundered angrily.

" It's absolutely none of their business how they get to run their home. Maybe if you invested this much energy in getting other things done, you wouldn't remain in this position." Mr. Richard retorted and loud gasps filled the air at the insult.

Mark pushed the door open at the same time and they turned to see the reason the parents were fighting. " You dare say that to me because of this worthless being?"

" Every human deserves respect whether rich or poor, give this guy his respect, it's not that expensive." Mr. Richard said, not backing down for her. Her shenanigans had gone on for too long. Dehumanization was an offense punishable by law, he wouldn't allow his wife to get away with it for no reason.

" So, you are standing there and watching my husband speak to me in this manner and you can't apologize?" She thundered.

Under normal conditions, if she was not a woman, and also his mother in-law, he wouldn't have hesitated in knocking some sense into her head because it was evident that she lacked some.

How dare she talk to him as if he had no future?

" Don't speak to him that way."

" Mom, dad." Lacey interjected." Why are you allowing this man to come between you?" She asked in a frustrated tone.

"Can't you see that she is abusing your husband?"

" Well, I don't care because starting from tomorrow, he ceases to be my husband. I'm getting a lawyer who will draw up another paperwork, this time we must get divorced for real." Lacey announced.
