Chapter 77: "Bunker of Shadows"

\# CHAPTER 77 – "Bunker of Shadows"

\## POV: Dante

The old Riverside Prison looks like hell's front door.

Been abandoned for fifteen years but someone's been busy down there. Fresh concrete. New ventilation systems. Guard towers that didn't exist when the state shut this place down. Marco's turned a dead prison into his personal fortress.

Getting inside takes three hours of cutting through razor wire and dodging security cameras. The underground levels are where the real work happens. Can smell it soon as I breach the first basement level. Disinfectant mixed with fear and something else. Something that makes my skin crawl.

The first lab I find makes me want to throw up.

Kids. Maybe two dozen of them. Ages five to fifteen. Sitting in metal chairs connected to machines I don't recognize. Electrodes stuck to their heads. IVs pumping God knows what into their veins. All of them staring straight ahead with empty eyes.

"What the fuck is this?" I whisper to nobody.

One of the kids turns toward my voice. Little girl maybe eight years old. Should be playing with dolls. Instead she's hooked up to equipment that belongs in a horror movie.

"Are you here to take us home?" she asks.

"Yeah sweetheart. I'm gonna get you out of here."

But even as I say it I know this is bigger than one rescue mission. Marco's got facilities like this all over the city. Been building his army one stolen child at a time.

The files I find in the next room make everything worse.

Names. Addresses. Blood types. But also genetic markers. DNA sequences. Something called "cognitive enhancement protocols." Marco ain't just training child soldiers. He's trying to build something new. Something inhuman.

That's when I see Eve's name.

Her file's thicker than the others. Photos going back years. Medical records stolen from hospitals. Blood work taken without permission. Even samples from when she was pregnant.

The sick bastard's been watching my wife since she was a teenager.

The research notes make my hands shake.

"Subject E demonstrates exceptional genetic markers consistent with Romano bloodline enhancement. Preliminary analysis suggests inherited abilities include: enhanced pattern recognition, precognitive flashes, emotional manipulation capacity, and possible telepathic sensitivity."

Enhanced pattern recognition. That's how she always knows what move to make in business deals. How she reads people like open books.

Precognitive flashes. The way she sometimes knows things before they happen. How she always seems ready for trouble.

Emotional manipulation. Not in a bad way. But she's always been able to make people trust her. Follow her. Believe in her vision.

And telepathic sensitivity. The way she sometimes answers questions I haven't asked yet. Like she's reading my mind.

I always thought those were just Eve being Eve. Turns out they're genetic gifts Marco wants to steal and replicate.

The worst part is the timeline. He started collecting information on her five years before we ever met. Before Lorenzo's war. Before any of the shit that brought us together.

This ain't about territory or revenge. Marco's been obsessed with Eve's bloodline from the beginning. Everything else was just cover for his real plan.

"Interesting reading?"

I spin around. Raphael's standing in the doorway holding a pistol pointed at my chest. My brother. The kid I raised. About to shoot me in a room full of tortured children.

"Raphael. Thank God you're here. We need to get these kids out."

"No. We need to get you out. Before Marco decides you seen too much."

"You know what he's doing to them?"

"I know he's building something better than what we got now. Stronger. Smarter. More loyal."

"He's torturing children."

"He's improving them. Giving them abilities their parents never dreamed of."

"By stealing kids from their families? By experimenting on babies?"

"By creating the next generation of leaders. People who won't make the mistakes we made."

I can't believe what I'm hearing. "These are kids Raphael. Innocent kids."

"Were you innocent when you started killing for the family? Was I? We been training child soldiers for years. Only difference is Marco's doing it scientific."

"The difference is we gave people choices. We didn't kidnap them and stick needles in their brains."

"Choices?" Raphael laughs. "What choices did I have? Born into this life. Raised to be your weapon. Never got to decide nothing for myself."

"So this is about jealousy? About not being the boss?"

"This is about evolution. About becoming something more than street thugs with expensive suits."

I look at the files in my hands. Evidence of Marco's crimes spread across dozens of pages. Proof that could bring down his entire operation.

"I'm taking these kids with me."

"No you ain't."

"You gonna shoot me Raphael? Your own brother?"

"You ain't been my brother for years. You been my keeper. My warden. The guy who decided what I was allowed to want."

"I protected you."

"You controlled me. Same thing Marco's doing to these kids. Only difference is he's honest about it."

The gun don't waver in his hands. Kid's serious. Really planning to shoot me if I try to leave with the evidence.

"What happened to you?"

"I grew up. Figured out that loyalty ain't the same as slavery. That following orders ain't the same as choosing your own path."

"And Marco offered you a different path?"

"Marco offered me partnership. Real partnership. Not just being the boss's little brother forever."

"By helping him torture children?"

"By helping him build something that lasts. Something that don't depend on one man's temper or one family's grudges."

"This ain't you talking. This is him. He got inside your head somehow."

"He showed me the truth. About what our family really is. About what Eve really is. About what their kid could become with the right guidance."

"Stay away from my son."

"Your son? Kid's gonna inherit abilities that could reshape the world. You want to waste that potential because you're too sentimental to see the bigger picture?"

"I want my son to choose his own future."

"There ain't gonna be a future unless someone takes control. Unless someone makes the hard decisions you're too weak to make."

The conversation's over. I can see it in his eyes. Whatever Marco did to him it worked. Turned my brother into something I don't recognize.

"I'm leaving with those files."

"No. You ain't."

But I'm already moving. Diving behind a lab table as the gun goes off. Bullets smash glass and electronics. Kids start screaming. Alarms start blaring.

I shoot back through the smoke and sparks. Not trying to kill him. Just trying to get out alive with evidence that could save those children.

More guards come running. Automatic weapons chattering in the hallways. I'm outnumbered fifty to one but the files in my jacket pocket are worth dying for.

The escape route I planned gets cut off fast. Have to improvise. Use the chaos to slip through service corridors while guards search the labs.

Make it to the parking garage just as reinforcements arrive. Motorcycle's where I left it. Engine starts clean and quiet.

But Raphael's there waiting.

"Last chance," he says. "Give me the files and walk away. Pretend you never seen this place."

"Can't do that."

"Then you really ain't my brother anymore."

"No. I guess I ain't."

I gun the engine and ride straight at him. He jumps aside but gets off two shots. One takes out my rear tire. Other one creases my shoulder. Burns like hell but don't slow me down.

Hit the street doing sixty with Marco's men right behind me. Lead them on a chase through downtown that ends when I lose them in the subway tunnels.

But I got what I came for.

Files full of evidence. Names of other facilities. Financial records showing where the money comes from. Everything needed to expose Marco's operation.

And the knowledge that my brother's gone. Whatever's wearing Raphael's face ain't family anymore. Just another enemy who knows all my weaknesses.

The war ain't just about territory now. It's about the future. About whether kids grow up free to make their own choices or get turned into weapons by madmen who think they know better.

Marco wants to build the next generation in his image. Turn children into perfect soldiers who follow orders without question.

I'm gonna stop him.

Even if it means going through my own brother to do it.

Even if it costs me everything I built.

Some things are worth more than family loyalty.

Freedom's one of them.

The choice to be human instead of a weapon is another.

And I'll burn the whole world down before I let Marco take that away from my son.
