Chapter 61: Chapter Sixty-one
I asked my father if he wants to come to my wedding and told him that he's invited. He seemed surprised; perhaps he didn't expect that I'd invite him or that I'd come here to greet him, wish him a Merry Christmas, and tell him I've forgiven him and that I'm getting married soon after everything he had done to me and my siblings. Tears streamed down his eyes, but he didn't make a sound, just a silent cry that expressed everything.
"Times over," the male officer said.
"Just a moment, please. She's still talking to her father," Harry requested.
"Three minutes. There are a lot of other visitors waiting; you're not alone in wanting to talk to your loved ones," the officer said in a firm tone.
I asked my father again if he wanted to come, but he told me that he might not make it, for he has a rare brain cancer. I was shocked when I heard it. I didn't know what to say or how to react. Something came to my mind—maybe, just maybe, brain problems can be genetic, but I didn't think too much about it.
What I am thinking of is my father. If he has brain cancer, then that means he has only a short time left. Thinking about it made me cry. He's the only family I have left, and yet, yet God's taking him from me too? Despite everything he did in the past, I want to see him change, but God, why can't you at least give him a chance?
I still want to talk to him, to know more. I've got a lot of things to say, questions and concerns, knowing that he only has a short time left, but the officer wouldn't let us, as other visitors have been waiting to talk to their loved ones too. I didn't want to leave, and Harry had to drag me away. "It's alright, dear; we can come here again," he said.
I watched as my father was taken back to the cell by the officer on the other side of the booth. Dammit! I didn't come here just to receive this bad news. Harry and I went back to his car. I continued crying. Harry wrapped his arms around me. "Everything will be alright, dear," he said, caressing the back of my head.
"Everything will be alright? You have no idea what you are talking about, Harry. My father's dying. He's the only family I got, and yet... yet you're saying that?"
I didn't want to hurt Harry's feelings. I didn't want to make him feel the way I feel; I didn't want to spread this ache in my heart, but I can't hold it back anymore. I need to express this sadness, or I'll explode. I pushed him away, punching his chest, as tears streamed down my eyes.
"Please don't say that, Georgia. I'm here; you're not alone. I'll stay here with you even if the world goes against you. I'm on your side. I'll never leave you, so don't say that." He hugged me tighter to the point that I could feel his heart beating. We stayed like this for almost half an hour, not moving, just tired of everything.
I badly want to save my father, to extend his life, to see him change, but I don't have the capability to do that, only Harry does, but I'm afraid he won't help me. I'm afraid he wouldn't want to go back to rock bottom with me again just to save the man who made my life miserable.
I gathered all my courage to ask him if he can help me. He wasn't surprised and said he's willing to help, to do anything to make me happy, even giving up all his wealth for the hundredth time, to save my father. He's so kind and generous, like an angel fallen from heaven disguised as a human, but it put me in a dilemma.
I stopped crying and wiped the tears off my face. I want to think clearly about it. I don't know what to do anymore. Harry has already done a lot for me. He had saved my life and everything, and now I am asking him to save my father. I feel horrible. I feel like I'm just using him for my own sake, but my father. Damn. Oh god, what should I do now? Shall I risk our new life to save my father? Help me...
My mind kept racing, thoughts roaming around my head as Harry removed his arms from me and sat on the driver's seat. "We should go home, my dear. I am tired. It's getting dark already." He turned the engine on and drove back home.
We didn't have dinner. Silence makes me think about my situation even more. It's like a black hole that is sucking all my energy. We climbed into our bed and lay there. I couldn't sleep at all. My mind is restless. My father's dying, and here I am, wasting my time thinking about whether I should save him or not.
"I know you're worried about your father, Georgia. I know you want to save him, and I'm willing to help you. I understand how you feel. When my mother was on the brink of death, I really wanted to be there. I even forgot to tell you that day, so I understand what you're going through right now. We'll go back to see your father tomorrow to confirm his true condition, but for now, you have to get some rest," Harry said.
I like how Harry can think clearly despite everything that is going on. Ships indeed sink only when water from outside gets into them. No wonder why Harry became a billionaire. It's because he has very good decision-making skills. It's not that he's objective because he also considers my feelings. He wouldn't say yes to my request if he didn't put how I'd feel into consideration.
If Harry uses his money to save my father, then our wedding and the businesses he's trying to build will be at risk. I know, brain cancer isn't something that can easily be treated, and treatment is very, very expensive. It already happened once; Harry became a poor man because he saved me. I'm afraid we'll become beggars again. I closed my eyes and tried to get some rest, though heavy thoughts kept swirling around my head. I should leave everything that is out of my control to the higher power. Oh god, if you're there, I surrender everything to you.
