Chapter 65 Damage

Chapter 65 Damage
I guess even today, I heard something. They said they were waiting for their business to start getting busy; maybe that means they're planning to attack soon. I voice this to his parents, who look happy to have any sort of information.

“Can you think of anything else?”

I lean back in the chair, looking away from them. I look towards the wall behind them, focusing on the scratch in the pale paint. My mind wanders to everything they’ve said in the past year.

“Why are we moving again? It’s my senior year, I wanted to finish at the same school.” I groan, flopping down onto the couch dramatically.

Mom looks away from the tv giving me a false sympathetic look. While Father sighs, tired of my complaining.

“We’ve got another job available that pays much better than our last one.”

“So you uproot our whole family for any job that makes more money?” I know my question is rude, but I’m not happy with their lack of a reason.

“Well, that and this job is something we started a while ago. We’re finally able to finish it.” Mom adds.

“What was unfinished about it?” I’m even more confused now.

“Well, we started the process of finding out all the information about the husband and the mistress, but the mistress saw us, and we almost got caught. So we had to pause, but the wife needs her proof, so we need to go back and finish it this time.”

Some of the people who hire my parents need some help. “Sounds like the wife needs to move on. Obviously, she knows he’s a cheater.”

Mom shrugs. “As long as she wants the proof, we get paid more money, so we are not the ones to judge.”

“I don’t know how you do it, I’d be judging too much.”

“You get used to it,” Father adds in his two cents.

I give up the fight. There is no use in asking much more. They never usually tell me much about these people. And I know I’ll be forced to move whether I like it or not. I wish someday I could just stay in one place instead of moving whenever they have a job call them.

“I remember us talking about this job,” I tell them. “Before we moved, I asked them about this job. They said it paid more money. They told me it was a cheating husband and the wife had hired them to get proof, but when they first started the job, they were spotted by the mistress and almost got caught.”

They look enthralled by my every word. “They said the job was considered unfinished, so the wife was paying them even more to come and finish it. I can’t really think of anything else that might have to do with you guys.”

It’s almost embarrassing to admit what I hear out loud. How could I not have put two and two together? How did I not question them and what they did more? How stupid I was to think they were being truthful. It’s weird to realize we were talking about them killing people. About them having a bounty on another person’s life.

“Thank you, Anna, that is a great help.” His mom smiles at me.

“So we can guess they are here for Alec and maybe to out the whole pack. We can assume they haven’t found us yet, which is why they aren’t busy right now. Do you think they suspect anything?” He asks Alec and me.

“I don’t think so. They acted very normal with me.” He looks to me to add.

“No, they haven’t. I mean, not that I can say I really know my parents well, but they acted normal with Alec and me. Even until they left, it was all very normal.”

“Hopefully that means we’re right and they’re still looking for us. And that should mean you aren’t in danger. At least not right now.”

“My parents won’t hurt me, I’ll be fine.” I know they’re killers, but they would never harm me.

“Maybe not, but they could use you as bait for Alec. And if they find out you’re mates, they may be more inclined to hurt you.”

“If they kill Alec, it’ll hurt you. Your parents don’t care if they still hunt him or our pack when they know he’s your mate.” Kyson’s voice adds to the converstaion surprising me.

I almost forgot they were here. I turn back in my seat, looking at them. He has a scowl on his face. I can already guess that he’s thinking like Cassie was. That I somehow knew about my parents and that I’m lying to everyone about that.

“Shut up,” Alec growls at him.

“What? It’s the truth, they obviously don’t care about you if they kill your mate or his pack.” He says cockyly.

“Kyson, watch it.” Alec’s dad scolds him.

Although I know what he’s saying is true, it’s still upsetting to hear. I don’t think they even know about Alec and me, let alone killing him, but I also know that they won’t stop until they get what they want. And he’s right, it would hurt me more than anything else if they killed him. Even if they hurt his pack, it would hurt me. I turn away from him, no longer wanting to give him any attention.

“For now, we want you to stay at Alec’s house while we put a plan together.” Alec’s dad continues.

“But wouldn’t my being there lead them to him? What if they are watching me or something?” I voice my concern.

Kyson’s jerk comments are making me realize how bad this could turn. “If that were the case, they would’ve already acted. You should be fine as long as you don’t see them again, we’ll take the chance.”

I’m still concerned about how this could go wrong, but I don’t want to keep on causing issues with this. I’ve already done enough damage, even if I didn’t mean to.
