Chapter 45 Flower Field

Chapter 45 Flower Field
I brush my hair for the fifth time, trying to get rid of all the knots, although that feels like an impossible task.

Alec is taking me on a date tonight. He hasn’t told me what we’re doing, but he did say it would be in the woods. I probably should wear more woods-friendly clothes, but I want to look good for him on another date. So I’m wearing a short sun dress that hugs my waist tightly before flowing out at my hips.

I haven’t brought up Cassie to Beth yet. Maybe I should’ve brought it up right away, but it’s been busy right now. I’ve been staying with Alec any chance I get.

The camp has gone almost back to normal, except for waiting on word about when Kai will come back. The activities have resumed, but because of the fight, Beth and I have been put into two separate groups. I don’t know why they would assume we caused the fight together when we weren’t the ones fighting. The point is, after this date, I need to talk to Beth about her.

I look at myself in the mirror, taking a deep breath. I’ve done my makeup, my hair, and my outfit. I look good and am ready to go on our date.

“Let me see the masterpiece.”

I do a walk in front of Beth, letting her see the whole outfit.

“He’s going to struggle keeping his hands off of you!!” She’s the best hype woman I’ve ever met in my life.

“Let’s hope so.” I tease.

“So any guesses as to what the date is?”

“Something in the woods is all I can guess, maybe a picnic.”

“Yeah, that would be my guess.”

It’s quiet for a few beats.

“Can I change the topic real quick?”

“Yeah, of course.” I know she’s about to give me some great gossip.

“I heard that Kai is coming back to the camp tomorrow.”

The shock is reflected on my face. “He’s coming back as a counselor still?”

She shrugs. “I don’t know for sure, but Emma in my activities group said he was either coming back as a counselor or that he was coming to pack up his stuff.”

“What if he tells Tim everything?”

“I would hope that one beating is enough for him. I’d be too scared of what he’d do to me if I ratted to talk about it all.”

“I hope you’re right. I really don’t want this to go any further. I mean, they’re both over 18, Alec could get into legal trouble.”

“Calm down, my sweet Anna. He won’t talk unless he’s stupid. You’re about to go on a date with your wonderful but terrifyingly good at fighting boyfriend. Please enjoy it, or he’ll get mad at me for stressing you out.”

She’s right, I shouldn’t be stressing about something that hasn’t even happened yet. Hopefully, it will never happen. “You’re right, I’m ready to go on a great date with him and not think about Kai one time.”

“Yes, that’s the spirit, go get 'em!”

Unfortunately, since the whole fight, Alec hasn’t been able to come onto the camp property again, mainly out of fear that someone will recognize him and he’ll get into more trouble. So I have to meet him on the trail to his house.

“I should be back tonight. I don’t plan on staying with him,” I tell her, looking myself over one more time.

“Don’t worry about it if one thing leads to another, I’ll be fine alone in our bunk.”

I give her a quick hug, practically running out the door into the woods before someone could possibly see me. He’s waiting for me at the start of the trail. He’s wearing a pair of black jeans and a dark green button-up shirt that complements his tan skin so beautifully. The jeans hug his legs so perfectly that I wonder if he had them tailored specifically for himself.

He looks me up and down as I do the same to him. “You look very handsome.”

“And you’re insanely gorgeous.” He greets me with a short kiss, keeping his arm resting loosely on my waist as he guides us down the trail.

“Are we having a picnic?”

He chuckles, “It’s a surprise I can’t tell you.”

I glance at him from the corner of my eye, “It’s going to kill me if I don’t know.”

“We’re almost there, babe. This can teach you some patience.”

I huff but give up on it. I said I wasn’t going to think about Kai on the date, but I have to ask, and technically, we aren’t on the date yet.

“Have you thought about what will happen when Kai comes back? If he tells the truth about you?”

“I’m not worried. I heard from a little bird that he has quit his job as a counselor and knows how to keep his mouth shut.”

They did something.

“What did you do? Or was it Kyson?”

“Nothing for you to worry about, he might’ve been involved, but just know we don’t have to worry about him ever again.”

“You’re never going to tell me?”

“Nope. We’re here now, this night is all about us.” He cuts off the trail into a field that looks like something out of a dream.

The field is made up of all kinds of wildflowers. It’s so breathtaking, I don’t even see the setup in the middle of it. A truck with its bed down is parked in front of a projector and a screen that’s been somehow set up in the field. The truck bed is covered with blankets and pillows, with a large bag on the edge of it. I assume food and drinks are in it.

“Wow, you’ve completely outdone yourself. I don’t even know what to say.”

“You don’t have to. Just seeing you happy is all I need. Come watch the movie with me.” He grabs my hand in his, walking us through the flowers to the truck.

He pulls himself onto the truck, reaching to lightly hold my waist and help me up. He takes off his shoes, leaving them on the edge by the bag, so I do the same. He grabs the bag, opening it to show me what I'd already assumed was inside. Snacks and drinks.

“I brought just a little of everything, so have whatever you want.” I grab a pop from the bag as he grabs a few snacks.

“What move are we watching?”

I get comfortable on the blankets, leaning back on the pillow, using the back of the truck to keep me partially upright. He does the same, making us sit close beside each other.

“Just some of your favorites.”

I give him a confused look.

“I have my ways of knowing.”

“All my favorites are romance. You sure you want to watch that type of movie?”

“I would love to watch your favorite movies, whether they are romance or action. Anything you want.”

That’s what we do. Watch my favorite movies he somehow found out about, snuggling in the beautiful field.
