Chapter 11: Chapter Nine
The oppressive hush that blanketed the kitchen was suffocating, pressing in on Lucia's senses as she stepped through the doorway. Shadows clung to the corners, lending an air of menace to the normally bright and airy space. Her heart pounded in her ears, pulse quickening as she took in the tense expressions of Aiden and Declan.
Swallowing hard, Lucia eased onto one of the stools, the heat and discomfort of her ongoing heat cycle a persistent ache. "What's going on?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Aiden's gaze shifted, locking with hers. "There's a rumour," he said, the words heavy with unspoken dread. "An unknown Alpha has been spotted near the pack grounds."
Lucia's breath caught in her throat, a familiar fear clawing at her insides. "Ryder?" The name left her lips like a curse, tongue twisting around the syllables.
Declan nodded, the muscles in his jaw tightening. "We believe so. He's been sniffing around the borders, and we can't seem to pin him down."
A tremor ran through Lucia's body, her hands clenching around the edge of the counter. The thought of her abusive ex-mate prowling so close sent a wave of nausea rolling through her. She'd fled his clutches once before, and the prospect of confronting him again filled her with dread.
Aiden reached across the table, his warm fingers enveloping hers. "We won't let him get to you, Lucia," he said, his voice low and soothing. "Declan and I will keep you safe."
Anxiety and desire warred within her, the scent of her heat mingling with the underlying tension. She yearned for the comfort and protection the twins offered, even as her instincts screamed to flee. "Call Aria," she breathed, hating the quiver in her voice. "I need my sister."
Declan didn't hesitate, already pulling out his phone. "I'm on it," he murmured, fingers flying across the screen.
Aiden's grip tightened around Lucia's trembling hand, his thumb tracing soothing circles on her skin. "Extra patrols have been set up around the cabin," he explained, his gaze unwavering. "Only mated wolves and women are allowed near - to make you feel more at ease."
Lucia released a shaky breath, some of the tension easing from her shoulders. Aiden's calming presence and Declan's swift action soothed the frantic energy coursing through her. Yet the thought of Ryder lurking nearby, hunting her, sent tendrils of fear snaking down her spine.
"He won't get to you," Aiden reassured, as if sensing her unease. "Declan and I, we'll do whatever it takes to keep you safe."
Lucia wanted to believe him, to find solace in the strength and determination reflected in his eyes. But her own experiences had shattered that trust, leaving her wary and guarded. She nodded mutely, silently praying that Aria would arrive soon to lend her the support she so desperately needed.
The sound of Declan clearing his throat drew her attention. "Aria's on her way," he announced, pocketing his phone. "And she's bringing her Alpha with her. They'll be here within the hour."
Lucia felt a flicker of relief, but it was quickly overshadowed by a fresh wave of discomfort. "I should..." She glanced down at her rumpled clothes, suddenly self-conscious. "I should probably clean up a bit."
Declan's eyes gleamed with a hint of mischief, the tension in the room momentarily diffused. "Probably a good idea," he teased, his gaze sweeping over her. "You do kind of smell like sex and us."
Lucia felt the heat rise to her cheeks at Declan's teasing remark. Despite the comfort she had found in their shared intimacy, the thought of her sister and alpha arriving to find her in such a state filled her with unease.
Offering them a small, nervous smile, she murmured, "I'll just... go clean up then." Turning, she made her way towards the stairs, acutely aware of the twin alphas' eyes following her every step.
As Lucia climbed the stairs, she could feel the weight of Declan and Aiden's concerned gazes on her back. Their faces had grown tense once more, the brief glimpse of levity fading as the gravity of the situation reasserted itself.
Reaching the bathroom, Lucia shut the door behind her and leaned against the sink, gazing at her reflection. Her eyes were wide, betraying the turmoil churning within her. Ryder was out there, searching for her. The thought of him closing in on her sent a shiver of fear down her spine.
Squeezing her eyes shut, Lucia tried to push the anxiety away. Aiden and Declan had promised to keep her safe. They would not let Ryder get to her again. Taking a deep, steadying breath, she began to undress, determined to present a calmer, more composed front when she rejoined the twins.
As the hot water cascaded over her, Lucia felt some of the tension ease from her muscles. The familiar scents of Aiden and Declan enveloped her, reminding her of the comfort and security they had provided. Yet the underlying worry remained, a constant companion she could not shake.
Once finished, Lucia wrapped a towel around herself and stepped out of the shower. Pausing in front of the mirror, she stared at her reflection, her gaze hardening with resolve. She would not let fear consume her. Not again. Whatever happened, she would face it head-on, with the support of her sister and the two alphas who had sworn to protect her.
Steeling herself, Lucia pulled on the soft, well-worn clothes belonging to the twins. Their scents surrounded her like a shield, reinforcing the sense of safety they had cultivated. With a steadying breath, she made her way back down the stairs, determined to confront the challenges that lay ahead.
