Chapter 6: Chapter VI
It was the look of someone who had seen too much and was no longer fully human. Lily took a step back, feeling a sudden fear of Alexander that she couldn't quite explain.
"Are you okay?" Alexander repeated, his voice softer this time.
Lily nodded, still feeling shaken. She wanted to get as far away from him as possible. She turned and ran, her legs pounding against the ground.
As she ran, she could feel eyes on her, like someone was watching her every move. She looked over her shoulder, but there was no one in sight.
Finally, she reached her apartment complex and ran inside, locking the door behind her. She collapsed onto the couch, her heart racing.
What had just happened to her? She couldn't shake the feeling that she had stumbled into something dangerous, something that she couldn't control.
As she sat there, trying to calm her nerves, her phone rang. It was an unknown number. She hesitated before answering, but curiosity got the better of her.
"Hello?" she answered hesitantly.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before a deep, menacing voice spoke.
"I told you I'd be seeing you soon, Lily," the voice said.
Lily's blood ran cold. It was the same unknown number that had sent her the ominous text. But who was it? And what did they want with her?
"Who are you?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.
"That's not important," the voice replied. "What's important is that you stay away from Alexander."
Lily's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean? Why should I stay away from him?"
But the voice didn't answer. The line went dead, leaving Lily feeling more confused and scared than ever.
She spent the rest of the night pacing back and forth, trying to make sense of what had happened.
Who was the person who had attacked her? And why did the
mysterious voice on the phone tell her to stay away from Alexander?
The more she tried to make sense of it all, the more lost she felt. It was like she had stumbled into a dark, twisting maze with no way out.
But as the sun began to rise on a new day, Lily made a decision. She couldn't run away from this. She had to face whatever was coming head-on.
And if that meant facing her fears and uncovering the truth about Alexander and the mysterious voice on the phone, then so be it.
Taking a deep breath, she grabbed her phone and dialed Alexander's number.
"Hello?" Alexander answered, his voice rough with sleep.
"It's me, Lily," she said, her voice shaking.
"Lily, thank god you're okay," Alexander said, sounding relieved.
"No," Lily said, feeling tears welling up in her eyes. She rubbed them quickly away with the back of her hand. Alexander could hear the fear and frustration in her voice.
"I'm sorry I was short with you last night," he said gently.
"What do you mean?""Of course, anything." His voice was crisp and happy but she could feel a thread of concern run through it like a vine through a stone wall.
"I need to talk to you. There's something I would like to ask you."
Lily did not say that this had terrified her, that someone was following her, or that they were checking on her during the night.
These things felt too big for words. But before she could ask, Knox called in on the other line.
Frustrated she told Alexander that she would need to call him back. "Hello?" she tried to sound as normal as possible.
"Hey! I tried to call you last night, but you didn't answer."
"I know you rushed me off the phone the other night, so I'm ensuring everything is okay with you."
Lily felt relieved to hear Knox's voice. He was a good friend, and boyfriend. She trusted him. She decided to confide in him and tell him about the strange occurrences happening to her.
"Knox, something's been happening to me," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Someone's been following me.I was attacked last night, and I've been getting these ominous messages from an unknown number. And they told me to stay away from Alexander."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line before Knox spoke again. "Lily, that's serious. You need to go to the police."
Lily hesitated. Going to the police seemed extreme, and she didn't want to make a big deal out of nothing. But then again, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was deeply wrong.
"I don't know," she said hesitantly. "I don't want to make a big deal out of nothing."
"This isn't nothing," Knox said firmly. "Someone attacked you. Someone's been following you. You need to take this seriously."
Lily took a deep breath. "Okay," she said, her voice trembling. "I'll go to the police."
"Good," Knox said. "And in the meantime, stay away from Alexander. I don't trust him. Not after everything that's happened."
Lily felt a pang of hurt at Knox's words. She didn't understand why he was so dead set against Alexander. But she knew she needed to listen to her boyfriend's advice, at least for now.
"I will," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, Knox."
"Anytime," he replied. "Stay safe, Lily."
Lily hung up the phone, feeling more confused and scared than ever. She didn't know who to trust or where to turn.
All she knew was that she needed to stay vigilant, to keep her eyes open for any signs of danger.
Peering out the window, she noticed a figure lurking in the shadows. It was too far away to make out any details, but she knew it was her attacker from the previous night. Her heart raced as she stumbled back and realized she was in more danger than ever before.
"How did I end up here?" She thought to herself, "I went from being boring ol' Lily to exciting adventurer Lily."
Over the next few days, she carefully avoided Alexander and discreetly met with Ivy between classes and trips back to her dorm. Ivy believed that Lily needed some fresh air and invited her to the Masquerade Ball.
"Come on girl, this will clear your head," She said, knowing that someone may or may not be trying to kidnap her. "It might be better if you stay in public places."
"The Masquerade Ball, huh?" Lily murmured doubtfully. "But Ivy... how am I supposed to manage a dress and all? I can barely afford tuition as it is, and my adoptive parents said they couldn't give me any more money since Dad's been sick recently."
Ivy smiled at her reassuringly, "That's what best friends are for! Don't worry; I'll help you out."
