Chapter 267: Happily ever after
He rested his forehead against Lucas's. "I've watched you fight through so much. I don't want you hurting anymore."
Lucas gently squeezed his hand.
"I'm going to be okay. Our babies are going to be okay."
Alex nodded, though tears had already begun filling his eyes.
"I know. His voice broke. "I love you too much."
Lucas smiled softly. "I love you too."
Outside the operating theatre, both families waited.
Sally paced endlessly. Caleb kept praying quietly. Emily clasped Annie's hand tightly. Jason tried distracting everyone with jokes that nobody heard.
Even Mr. Westman, usually composed, couldn't stay seated for more than a minute. "This waiting is torture." He sighed heavily.
Doctor Peters stepped into the waiting area. "Everything is ready. The surgery will begin shortly."
Alex looked at him. "Can I stay with him?"
Doctor Peters smiled. "Yes. As long as you remain calm."
Alex nodded immediately. "I won't disturb anything."
The nurse opened the theatre doors. "It's time."
Alex leaned down one last time.
"You remember the promise we made on our wedding day?"
Lucas smiled.
"Forever."
Alex kissed his forehead.
"Forever together."
Together, hand in hand, they wheeled Lucas toward the operating theatre.
Behind them, both families joined hands in silent prayer. No one spoke.
No one moved. Every eye remained fixed on the closed operating room doors.
The operating room was brightly lit. Alex stood beside Lucas, dressed in a sterile gown, mask, and cap. One hand never left Lucas's trembling fingers.
"It's okay," he whispered, kissing the back of his hand. "I'm right here."
Lucas managed a weak smile, his eyes on him.
Doctor Kornelly looked up from the surgical drape. "Everything is ready."
The room became silent except for the steady beeping of the monitors.
Alex's heart pounded so loudly he was certain everyone could hear it.
Then, Doctor Kornelly smiled.
"I can see the first baby."
Alex instinctively lifted his head, trying to look without getting in the doctors' way.
A tiny little body slowly emerged.
Time seemed to stop.
"It's a boy!" Doctor Kornelly announced joyfully.
For a second, the baby remained silent. Alex stopped breathing.
Then, a loud cry filled the operating room. "Waaah! Waaah!"
Alex burst into tears instantly.
"Oh my God..." His voice broke completely. "Our son..."
"Congratulations, Daddies."
Doctor Peters carefully started attending to the baby.
Doctor Kornelly smiled. "We're not done yet."
A few moments later, "I've got the second baby."
Everyone waited.
Then, another tiny cry echoed throughout the theatre.
"It's another boy!"
Alex completely broke down.
“Two sons.”
He covered his face, sobbing openly. "I can't believe it..."
Doctor Peters wrapped the first baby in a warm blanket before bringing him toward Alex.
Alex took their son in his arms. The tiny baby had a full head of dark hair and seemed to be waving his tiny fists.
Alex laughed through his tears.
"Hello, little prince." He kissed the baby's forehead gently.
"I've waited so long to meet you."
Then a nurse wrapped the second baby after cleaning him up, then placed him in his second hand.
Later they were taken from Alex’s hands as his tears of joy kept coming.
“Come on Daddy Alex, control your tears.” Doctor Kornelly cautioned him gently.
“I'm sorry, this is so overwhelming.”
As they placed the babies on the same cot, the twins instinctively reached toward each other.
The nurses smiled. "They already know they're brothers."
Alex gently touched each tiny hand. "My boys...You've made all my dreams come true."
He looked at Lucas, who was exhausted but smiling through tears.
"You did it, baby."
Lucas nodded weakly.
"We did it."
Alex leaned down carefully and kissed him. "I'm so proud of you and I love you so much."
Lucas smiled.
Doctor Kornelly completed the procedure before looking at Alex.
"Congratulations. Both babies are perfectly healthy.” He smiled warmly.
"And so is your big baby."
Alex released the breath he hadn't realized he was holding.
"Thank you, Doctors, thank you nurses."
His voice cracked. "Thank you so much."
Meanwhile, outside the operating theatre, the entire family had stood anxiously.
As the first baby's cry echoed into the hallway.
Everyone froze. Then Sally clasped both hands over her mouth.
"Oh, one is here!"
Before the excitement could settle...a second cry followed.
Mr. Westman's eyes filled with tears. "They're both here."
The waiting room erupted.
Emily jumped into Annie's arms.
Jason hugged their father before sharing the hugs.
Everyone laughed and cried at the same time.
Some minutes later, Doctor Kornelly stepped out.
Everyone rushed toward him.
"Doctor!"
"How are they?"
Doctor Kornelly smiled broadly.
"Congratulations. You have two healthy baby boys."
Cheers erupted throughout the hallway.
Sally cried openly, thanking God over and over again.
Mr. Benson wiped tears from his eyes.
Mr. Westman laughed proudly.
"I'm a grandfather!"
Emily hugged Annie tightly. "They're finally here!"
Then Sally suddenly grabbed the doctor's arm. "What about Lucas?"
Her voice trembled.
"How is he doing?"
Doctor Kornelly smiled reassuringly. "Lucas is doing very well. The surgery was successful."
He'll need rest for now, but he's perfectly fine."
Sally burst into fresh tears of relief.
"Thank God, I can finally breathe."
One Month Later
Laughter echoed inside Alex's SUV. The twins slept peacefully in their matching car seats.
Lucas sat beside them, gently stroking one tiny cheek.
"I still can't believe they're ours."
Alex smiled as he drove. "I still check every morning to make sure I wasn't dreaming."
Lucas laughed softly. The wedding rings on both their fingers caught the evening sunlight.
They soon pulled into Benson Mansion. The front door burst open before they had even switched off the engine.
"They're here!" Emily ran outside first. Behind her came Sally, Jason, Annie, Mr. Benson and, just behind him, Emily's father, who had also been invited for the family dinner.
Everyone gathered around the car.
"No pushing," Alex laughed.
"You'll scare them."
"They're my grandsons," Sally protested playfully as she picked up one of them. "I have first rights."
"No," Mr. Westman argued.
"They're my grandsons too." He took the second one from Lucas's hand.
Lucas laughed until tears gathered in his eyes. "They're going to grow up surrounded by too much love."
Alex slipped an arm around his waist as everyone headed into the mansion.
"There is no such thing as too much.” He pulled him closer facing him. You're looking more pretty everyday."
“I think in five years we will go for another twin, daddy. What do you think, hmm?” Lucas said teasingly.
Alex leaned in and kissed him passionately. “Don’t start with me mommy. We're just a month old. Leave that future for now, hmm.”
Lucas laughed softly as he kissed him again. Together they walked into the house with smiles.
The dining hall had been decorated beautifully. Family photographs lined one wall, and in the center sat two tiny chairs engraved with the words:
Our Little Miracles.
As everyone gathered around the table, the twins stirred awake.
One yawned. The other stretched his tiny legs.
The room instantly filled with smiles.
Alex looked around at everyone gathered there. The parents who had become accepting, business rivals who had become family, and the man he loved sitting beside him.
He reached for Lucas's hand beneath the table. Lucas intertwined their fingers and smiled.
After dinner they walked out to the balcony.
"What are you smiling about?"
Alex looked back at their families.
Then kissed Lucas's temple.
"I'm thinking that every pain we endured was worth this moment."
Lucas rested his head on Alex's shoulder. "Our beginning wasn't easy."
Alex smiled. "Yes, but it was ours."
Outside, the lights bathed Benson Mansion in a golden glow as laughter drifted through the open windows.
Alex and Lucas finally found the happiness they had always deserved.
And as their twin boys relaxed peacefully in their grandparents' arms, a new story quietly began.
One filled not with fear or heartbreak, but with love, hope, and endless tomorrows.
