Chapter 1028: This Person Is Saying One Thing but Meaning Another!
As Lucas stood up to leave, he turned to Mary and said, "I'll wait for you, no matter how long it takes."
Mary was stunned, unsure of how to respond.
Just then, her phone rang. Relieved, she quickly pulled it out. It was Felicity calling.
Thank goodness for best friends.
"Sorry, Lucas, I need to take this call," Mary said with a polite smile before hurrying upstairs to answer.
She was about to thank Felicity, but the moment she heard her friend's voice, her smile vanished.
"Mary, help!"
Felicity's panicked voice came through, and Mary's heart clenched.
"What happened, Felicity? Take a deep breath and tell me slowly."
"It's my dad. He had a sudden brain hemorrhage, and the doctors say he needs emergency surgery!"
"What?" Mary couldn't believe how urgent the situation was. "What do you need me to do?"
"We're at Serenity Health Hospital, the closest one to my house. But for this kind of neurosurgery, Unity Health Center is the best. The surgery needs to be done within 6-24 hours of the incident. The doctor suggested transferring him to Unity Health Center immediately for the operation. The transfer is being arranged, but Mary, can you ask Timothy for help?"
Timothy was a renowned neurosurgeon at Unity Health Center in Marshall City, and Felicity knew about Mary's connection to him.
"Okay, don't worry. I'll call him right now," Mary assured her. "I'll get back to you soon."
"Thank you, Mary," Felicity said, her voice breaking with relief.
Mary hung up and immediately dialed Timothy's number. She usually avoided asking him for favors, but this was a matter of life and death.
The phone rang briefly before Timothy's cool voice answered, "What is it?"
"I need your help," Mary said directly, surprising Timothy with her urgency.
"What do you need?" he asked, curious.
"Felicity's dad had a brain hemorrhage. He needs surgery within 6-24 hours. They're transferring him to Unity Health Center. Can you help?"
There was a long pause before Timothy replied, "Help you? My surgeries are booked for the next six months. How am I supposed to help?"
Mary was taken aback. She hadn't realized how busy Timothy was.
But Felicity's dad needed this surgery urgently.
"Can you make an exception, just this once?" she pleaded.
"An exception? Who do you think you are?" Timothy's voice was cold. He believed in treating all patients equally and despised using connections to jump the line.
Mary's heart sank. Who did she think she was?
"Sorry to bother you," she said, hanging up as tears welled up in her eyes.
Timothy sensed her despair through the phone, and his expression hardened.
"Timothy?" Catherine walked in, noticing his troubled look. "Who called you? Why are you so upset?"
Timothy didn't respond, staring at his phone.
Catherine approached his desk. "I checked the surgery schedule. You don't have any surgeries this afternoon. Can you come with me to the home store?"
Timothy remained silent, looking at the transfer records on his computer.
After a moment, he said, "I can't. I have an emergency surgery this afternoon."
Catherine was surprised. "An emergency surgery? Who called you to make such an exception?"
Timothy was known for his strict principles. He never made exceptions, no matter who asked.
"Someone I owe," he said quietly.
Mary was Kenneth's responsibility, and she rarely asked for help. This time, he couldn't refuse her.
Catherine frowned, puzzled. What could Timothy possibly owe someone?
Mary, still holding her phone, was unsure how to tell Felicity. Before she could decide, her phone rang again.
"Mary, thank you so much!" Felicity's voice was filled with joy.
"What?" Mary asked, confused.
"The surgery is scheduled for 2 PM, with a 95% success rate! Dr. Reed has been amazing. I can't thank you and Dr. Reed enough!"
Mary was stunned. Timothy had refused, yet now everything was arranged.
"I'll come to the hospital," Mary said, deciding to take leave and support Felicity.
When Mary arrived, Felicity was waiting downstairs.
"Why are you out here? Is your dad okay alone?"
"It's fine," Felicity said, shaking her head. "We hired a professional caregiver."
"Today was terrifying," she said, her voice trembling. "Thank goodness for Timothy."
"Let's go inside," Mary said, supporting Felicity as they walked in.
Mary couldn't understand why Timothy had changed his mind. She shared the story with Felicity, who quickly realized the truth.
"He's just pretending to be tough! He must care about you a lot to help like this," Felicity said.
"What?" Mary was taken aback.
"Maybe there's still a chance for you two," Felicity suggested. "You're still married. Why not give it another try?"
Mary was hesitant. They had been married for three years, and now they were on the brink of divorce. Could they really start over?
