Chapter 17 No Escape Clause
Alarms were screaming through the corridors like animals that were dying. Red emergency lights were flashing in time with Iriss heartbeat. She held Lila tight against her chest. The girls small arms were wrapped around Iriss neck very tightly. Lilas body was shaking. Warm tears were soaking into Iriss shirt. "Mommy I’m scared " Lila whispered. Her voice was small and cracking. It made Iriss heart break.
“I know, baby. I’m scared too " Iris said. Her own voice was raw and shaking. There was no point in pretending. Not anymore. She looked at Lucien across the lab room. His face was set with determination.. She saw the same fear she felt. The fear of losing everything they had just started to get back.
Lucien was working fast on the computer. His fingers were flying over the keyboard. Sweat was on his forehead. "Marcus locked the system with encryption. I can stop the toxin trigger.. It’s going to take time we don’t have." His voice was steady for Lilas sake.. Iris heard the strain.
They heard gunfire from the end of the hallway. Their team members were shouting updates through comms. Unknown people were breaking through. They were heavily armed. The self-destruct sequence was counting down on every screen: 7 minutes left.
Lila lifted her head. Her stormy eyes were like her fathers. She looked at Iriss face. "The other mommy said you didn’t want me. That you gave me away.”
The words hurt Iris like knives. She swallowed the lump in her throat. She kissed Lilas head. "That was a lie. We thought you were gone. We were sad every day.. We’re here now. We’re never leaving you again.”
Lucien stopped working on the computer. He came to them in two strides. He dropped to one knee. His large hand cupped Lilas cheek gently. "Your mother is the person I know.. I’m not the man who gives up. We’re getting out of here as a family.”
For one second the three of them were a circle amid the chaos. Lila reached out. Touched Luciens face. She was checking if he was real. The moment was very human. A father, a mother and a child desperate to believe in safety after years of lies.. The building shook with another explosion. It reminded them safety was still a dream.
Lucien went back to the computer. "Iris I need your wrist.”
She hesitated for a second. Then she offered her arm. The scar she had for eight years now felt like a sign. Lucien pulled out a medical kit. He made a cut. Iris. Held still. Lila watched wide-eyed. Didn’t cry.
The small implant came out. A piece of metal. Lucien crushed it under his boot. "That gives us time. Marcus can’t trigger it remotely now.”
Iris felt relief.. It was short-lived. The comms crackled again. "Hostiles in sector four! We’re falling back!”
Lucien pulled Iris and Lila behind a lab bench for cover. "Stay down." He handed Iris a pistol. Their eyes locked. In that look passed everything love, fear, anger at the years stolen and a promise to survive this together.
Another explosion rocked the facility. Dust rained from the ceiling. Lucien grabbed a tablet. He initiated an override. He rerouted power systems to delay the self-destruct. His free hand found Iriss. He squeezed tight. Iris squeezed back. Their daughter was pressed safely between them.
“We’re not dying here " Iris said fiercely. "Not when we finally have both our children.”
The words seemed to make Lucien stronger. His fingers moved faster.. Marcuss voice returned over the speakers. He was calm and mocking. "Impressive, Graves.. Did you really think the implant was the only safeguard? There’s a protocol tied to Iris’s DNA. If she leaves this building without transferring control the entire facility will flood with a acting nerve agent. You have four minutes.”
Lila whimpered. Iriss stomach dropped. The fear in her daughters eyes was like her own. This wasn’t about escape anymore. It was about whether their family could survive the very building meant to be their salvation.
Lucien cursed under his breath. "He’s bluffing on the nerve agent. Probably.. We can’t risk it." He looked at Iris. He was conflicted. "I can transfer assets. I can buy us minutes. But it means giving him access to critical systems.”
“Do it " Iris said without hesitation. "Our lives are worth more than any empire.”
As Lucien began the transfer the lab door exploded inward. Three armed men burst through. Lucien moved fast. He fired shots that dropped two. Iris raised her pistol. She took down the third. The reality of shooting another human being made her nauseous.. Protecting her daughter left no room for hesitation.
More footsteps thundered closer. Lucien finished the transfer. "That should slow the agent protocol. We move now!”
He scooped Lila into his arms. Iris covered their rear. They sprinted down the corridor. Shadows leaped wildly under the strobing lights. Gunfire chased them. A bullet grazed Lucien’s shoulder. He. Didn’t slow. He shielded their daughter with his body.
They reached a service stairwell. The team had secured a path downward.. The building groaned around them like a living thing ready to collapse. As they descended another revelation played on wall-mounted screens. -Recorded messages from Marcus.
“Iris, my niece. You were always the key. Your unique brain chemistry made the memory tech possible. The children were insurance.. You… you were the future.”
The words chilled her. Family betrayal cut deeper than any enemy. Lucien’s hand found hers again on the landing. His hand was sticky with his blood. "Stay with me.”
They burst into the parking level. Their convoy waited.. The vehicles were compromised. Tires slashed, one already burning. Their remaining guards fought off a wave of attackers in the distance.
“No escape clause " Marcus’s voice echoed from speakers. "Choose, Graves. Leave the woman and girl behind take the boy’s location data I’m sending you and live.. Die together.”
Lucien’s roar of fury echoed off walls. He set Lila down gently beside Iris. He handed her a magazine. "Cover her.”
In the chaos they took cover behind a pillar. Hostiles closed in from directions. Iriss heart hammered hard she felt dizzy. Lila cried quietly. She clung to Iriss leg. This was the moment everything could end. Their chance at family reduced to blood on concrete.
Lucien returned fire with accuracy. He dropped two assailants.. Their ammo was running low. The building’s structural warnings blared. Collapse imminent in under two minutes.
In a lull Lucien pulled Iris close. Lila was between them. His mouth crashed against hers in a bruising kiss. It tasted of blood, fear and love fierce it hurt. "If this is it " he breathed against her lips "know that every obsession, every choice was because I couldn’t live without you.”
Tears streamed down Iris’s face. "Then fight like hell to live with me instead.”
They broke apart. Lucien spotted a reinforced service tunnel at the end of the garage. "That way. It leads to the rail line. Our backup extraction team should be there.”
They ran. Gunfire chased them. A bullet caught one of their guards. Iris felt the sting of another graze across her calf.. She kept moving. She was carrying Lila now as the girl’s legs gave out from terror.
They reached the tunnel entrance. Lucien sealed the door behind them. Another explosion rocked the facility. The lights. Died. In darkness they moved by touch and the faint glow of a single tactical flashlight.
Lucien led. His pistol was ready. Iris followed with Lila in her arms. The girl’s breathing was rapid and shallow. "Are we going to die, Mommy?”
“No " Iris answered. Her voice was stronger than she felt. "We’re going home.”
The tunnel seemed endless. Water dripped from cracked ceilings. Distant rumbles suggested the main facility was coming down. Then new footsteps echoed ahead. Not theirs.
Lucien raised his weapon. "Show yourself!”
A familiar voice answered. "It’s me. Your uncle’s head of security.. I’m not with him anymore.”
A man stepped into the flashlight beam. His hands were raised. He looked exhausted. He had a scar, across his cheek. "Marcus double-crossed everyone. I have a working vehicle two hundred meters ahead.. There’s one more thing you need to know.”
Suspense tightened like a noose. Iriss arms ached from carrying Lila.. She refused to set her down.
The man kept talking. "The neural tech Marcus made? It doesn’t just erase memories. It can also put ones in. He planned to wipe both kids and turn them into weapons against you.. There’s a main server in the rail station up ahead. If you destroy it the tech will die with this place.”
Lucien still had his gun pointed at him. "Why are you helping us now?”
“Because I have a daughter too.. I’m tired of this never-ending cycle.”
They moved forward watching each other. The tunnel opened into an underground station. The main server was buzzing in the center glowing ominously. As Lucien went closer to it with explosives from his bag Marcus’s last message played from speakers.
“Congratulations on getting this.. The transfer was a trick. The nerve agent is already being released. You have sixty seconds.”
Iris’s eyes got wide with fear. She could already smell something in the air. Lila started coughing.
Lucien worked faster putting charges down. "Iris, take her. Run toward the exit! I’ll set it off remotely!”
“No!" Iris shouted, emotions taking over. "We leave together. Not at all!”
The fear in that moment was clear. A mom who wouldn’t leave the man she loved a dad who wanted to save his family a kid caught in a war she didn’t choose. Lucien looked at them love and pain fighting on his face.
He set the timer for twenty seconds. Ran. They sprinted toward the exit together. The explosion behind them lit the tunnel in a white light. The shockwave pushed them forward. Debris fell down.
They came out into the cold night air just as the main facility fell in a roar behind them. Their backup team waited with a vehicle. They got in hurt, bleeding, but alive.
As the vehicle sped away Lila fell asleep between them, tired. Iris leaned against Lucien, his arm around her shoulders. Their hands rested on their daughter’s back.
“We did it " she whispered, tears flowing freely now. "We have her.”
Lucien kissed the top of her head his voice filled with emotion. "This isn’t over. Marcus is still there.. Tonight we’re together.”
As the city lights showed up on the horizon a final text arrived on Lucien’s secure phone from an unknown number.
Well done.. The real game begins now. The kids have the markers in their blood. Come find me when you’re ready to finish what we started.. Marcus
Iris read the message over his shoulder. Their win tasted bittersweet. They had their daughter. The shadow of her uncle’s plans stretched longer than they thought. New questions came up about what was done to their kids on a level.
She looked at Lucien, their fingers intertwining. "Whatever comes next we face it as parents first. Partners second.”
He nodded, pulling her closer. In the back of the speeding vehicle with their family breathing between them the weight of survival settled heavily. They escaped the facility. The threat, from Marcus’s plan still hung over their future.
