Lucille smiled, “Didn’t you wish I didn’t know you?”
“When did I ever say that?”
He shot back at her.
Lucille found this argument pointless–she said he did, he said he didn’t, neither had proof, and it dragged on endless- ly.
“Excuse me, Cedrick.”
She said, intending to duck past him.
But she didn’t expect Cedrick to go a bit crazy, bending down to scoop her up in his arms.
“Cedrick, what are you doing?”
She was completely caught off guard.
Cedrick didn’t speak, just carried her down the steps.
With the banquet just ending and people milling about, Lucille couldn’t really scream or make a scene–she couldn’t afford the embarrassment.
Cedrick warned Lucille, “You’re my wife, so you’d better tell your Aydan to back off. I’m an outsider, and when I lose it, I don’t care about shame. If he, the Hurley heir, flirts with another man’s wife, can he handle the disgrace?”
“Don’t assume everyone’s as shameless as you!”
Lucille retorted angrily while being carried.
But Lucille genuinely didn’t want Aydan dragged into any scandal over her, signaling him not to follow. She was heading home anyway, and who she went with didn’t matter.
Cedrick had driven there that night, his car parked right below the banquet hall steps. He kept holding Lucille, then opened the door and tossed her inside.
“Where do you live?”
Cedrick asked her after getting in.
Lucille didn’t want to tell him.
“Fine, you don’t have to say.”
Cedrick drove off, heading straight ahead.

Lucille didn’t know where he was taking her, but she wasn’t foolish enough to jump out–her foot couldn’t handle an- other injury.
Let him go wherever; given Cedrick’s character, he wouldn’t sell her off.
Objectively speaking, Cedrick wasn’t a bad person.
Over the past five years, he’d treated her quite well.
On their wedding day, he swore in front of Grandma to take lifelong responsibility for her care, never letting her down.
In the years that followed, he kept that promise.
He sought out top doctors for her foot.
Whatever she wanted or didn’t, he’d bring it home without caring about the cost.
If she coughed once at night, the next day he’d tell Mylee to take her to the hospital and make her some cough–sooth- ing soup…
Things like that happened countless times.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t have endured for five years, all the way until Maricela came back.
If he had any fault, his biggest mistake was not loving her.
Because he didn’t love her, the scale always tipped toward those he did love.
Cedrick drove straight to a hotel entrance.
After parking, he walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and lifted her out.
“Should I carry you in, or can you walk?”
He stood by the car door, holding her as he asked.
“I’ll walk.”
She frowned.
Why bring her to a hotel?
No point running–how could she outpace him with one leg injured?
Then, she watched him book a room.
Her mind flooded with questions. “Don’t tell me this room is for me?”
“ID card.”
He held out his hand.

“No way!
I already have my own hotel room. Why would I stay here?”
Cedrick ignored her, asking the front desk, “Can I provide an ID number?”
“Yes.”
The clerk replied.
Lucille then heard him recite a string of numbers–her exact ID number.
She stared, surprised. “You remember my ID number?”

She never denied Cedrick’s attention to detail, but his memory relied entirely on reminders on his phone, not genuine
care.
Hearing this, Cedrick’s eyes turned fierce. “How could I forget the number of someone set to inherit my estate?”
