Chapter 292
I’m
your
actual wife, Nicole is his actual wife, and Lucille is Cedrick’s actual wife. We’re here at this party, out in the open. What’s so embarrassing about that?
Who’s the embarrassing one?
Who’s the one causing the embarrassment?”
“Please, Zoe…” David was practically clinging to Zoe’s arm and begging like a puppy.
Zoe snorted and took Lucille’s hand.
Maricela chose this moment to speak up, wearing her signature timid, wronged, red–eyed expression. “Harlan, David, and you two… wives. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m good friends with the guys and I was just looking out for them. This party is really important, and I was just thinking that Lucille has never really been to these social events, and…”
She glanced at Lucille’s feet. “As the wife of a CEO… she also has trouble getting around. What if she makes a fool of herself later? Wouldn’t that reflect badly on the company?”
Zoe scoffed, “When two companies partner up, it’s about their strength. Since when does it depend on the CEO’s wife’s feet?
If Rossi’s company is that kind of company, then you shouldn’t even bother working with them!
They’re not worthy!”
Lucille glanced at her brother with a smile, as if to say, “She means you. You’re not worthy.”
Robert smiled back and nodded, as if to say, “Let’s just play along. We’ve got nothing better to
do.”
So, when Zoe took Lucille’s hand again, Lucille stood up and went with her.
At the same time, Robert also drew some attention. After all, he couldn’t let his sister go off alone with this group; he was worried.
“And this is…?”
Zoe didn’t recognize Robert.

Lucille introduced with a smile, “Oh, my cousin, Robert.”

Zoe nodded. Apparently, the name Robert wasn’t on any list of prominent people, and no one knew who he was, but she still said politely, “Hello.”
“Hello.”
Robert smiled back in response.
The group headed toward the center of the banquet hall.
Because Robert and Lucille had originally found a quiet spot to sit, the commotion just now hadn’t spread, and basically no one heard what happened, except for a few girls at the table next to Lucille’s.
These girls had no interest in what they were arguing about; they only noticed the necklace around her neck when Lucille stood up.
It
got livelier after they walked into the center of the party crowd.
Cedrick’s company was a rising star, lacking the deep roots of the old money families, but it was a tech company, and its youthfulness was actually an advantage. Plus, it was truly a leader in its industry.
This aligned with the direction of the partners Rossi’s company was looking for.
So, a consensus seemed to have unconsciously formed at this party–Cedrick’s company would
come out on top.
Everyone came over enthusiastically to say hello.
Soon, their group split into several smaller ones. Harlan and David went to chat with some male guests, Maricela quickly joined a few other girls nearby, leaving only four people with Lucille.
“Who’s that guy?
Why is he with a bunch of women?”
The person who asked was an acquaintance of Maricela’s, and they were looking at Robert.
No one knew how Maricela had acquaintances at the party, but Maricela glanced at Robert and said contemptuously, “Just some nobody who got in by clinging to a woman. He’s nothing but a pretty face.”
Her voice wasn’t quiet, so everyone heard.

A wave of laughter went through the small circle around them.

In a social scene like this, having a pretty face wasn’t a compliment. It was usually associated with being a plaything, for both men and women.
Robert naturally heard it too, but he just held his glass of wine and smiled faintly.
He was dressed particularly elegantly today, so he probably gave off a different impression than he did in the basement that day. He just seemed too refined.
