Harlan continued, “This marriage was never what you wanted. You had no choice back then, you sacrificed your own happiness to marry her. You’ve been miserable for five years, and now she’s the one bringing up divorce. You should just let it happen.”
Cedrick’s expression grew even more troubled.
“Don’t tell me you can’t let her go?”
Harlan asked, seeing his expression.
Cedrick remained silent.
“Cedrick…” Harlan sighed. “I get how you feel. After all, you’ve lived together for five years. How could there not be any feelings?
You’d get attached to a puppy after five years, let alone a living, breathing person. But you have to believe me, you can’t force happiness. Time will help you forget everything.
The most important thing is, you’re not the one abandoning her. She’s the one who wants to leave
you.”
“Stop talking.”
Cedrick leaned back in his chair and shook his head.
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop. Come on, let’s go get a drink.”
Harlan tried to pull him up.
Cedrick didn’t move an inch. “I don’t feel like drinking. You guys go ahead.”
“No way.
We can’t go without our main guy!”
But Cedrick just closed his eyes wearily. “I’m really not going. I promised her.”
“Promised what?”
Harlan didn’t understand who “her” was.

“I promised her…” Cedrick said as if talking in his sleep, his eyes still closed, “…that I wouldn’t drink again…”
“You’re really not going?”
Harlan was taken aback by his behavior.
Cedrick didn’t say anything else. Harlan stood there for a moment, then finally left. As for the man Cedrick had asked him to investigate, it was strange, he couldn’t find a single thing about who he was.
The next day, Lucille was very happy. Her grandmother was visibly doing better. She wouldn’t regain the weight she’d lost overnight, but her spirits were much higher than the day before. During his rounds, the doctor also said she was recovering steadily and would get better each day.
Her grandmother held Lucille’s hand with one hand and Robert’s with the other, her eyes filled with tears of joy. “I thought I’d never see you again…”
“Grandma, that won’t happen. My brother and I have already agreed that from now on, our family will all be together.”
Lucille leaned on her grandmother’s shoulder.
Of course, “this family” didn’t include her parents and younger brother. She had been completely focused on taking care of her grandmother for the past two days and hadn’t spared a thought for
those three.
The three of them were talking when another message from Cedrick arrived: Lucille, I brought Mylee over to help you take care of your grandmother. Let us come up.
Lucille was a little confused. Why didn’t he just come up?
What’s there to even argue about?
“What’s wrong?”
Robert asked, noticing her expression was off.
Lucille showed him the text.
“This Mylee, who is she?
Is she reliable?”
Robert asked.

Lucille nodded. “She’s the person who took care of me for five years.”
“I’ll go down and take a look then.”
Lucille followed. “I’m going too.”

Perfect. There were some things she needed to make clear to Cedrick. This entanglement really had to stop.
Robert thought for a moment. It was fine. He’d be by her side anyway, in case any trouble started.
Lucille saw Cedrick again.
He didn’t look well. He looked haggard, with dark circles under his eyes, and he smelled strongly of smoke.
She frowned instinctively.
Cedrick noticed it himself and coughed a couple of times. “Sorry, I had clients at the office this morning and smoked a few cigarettes.”
After speaking, he immediately called Mylee over. “Since you’re back, you and Grandma both need someone to take care of you. Although…”
Cedrick glanced at Robert. “Although we could hire someone new, Mylee is familiar with everything, and she took good care of you before.”
