Chapter 52 The Superstar (14)

The hospital room was quiet now, with only Bensham and me left inside.

I was the first to break the silence, "Where’s Anna and Morton?"

Bensham’s expression darkened, and he snapped, "Do you still like that scumbag?!"

Me:?

Come on, I’m not blind.

"Morton’s in the room next door. Anna… she’s dead," Bensham said.

That wasn’t entirely surprising. Morton, after all, was a man with a passion for diving—his chances of survival were naturally higher.

But then a thought struck me.

"Who saved me?"

Bensham looked at me, utterly exasperated, and pointed to himself.

"Who else do you think saved you besides me?!"

"Thanks," I said calmly. "Now, could you help me call the police?"

Bensham nearly leaped out of his chair, visibly agitated, "I saved you, and now you want to call the cops on me?! Are you out of your mind?!"

Ignoring him, I grabbed his phone and dialed the police myself.

A few minutes later, the officers arrived.

After asking me a few routine questions, they moved to the room next door and escorted a groggy Morton out in handcuffs. The cameraman had perfectly captured the confrontation between Anna and me.

Morton’s attempt to drown me? Also recorded in crystal-clear detail.

Photographer: Looks like I’ve captured another sensational headline.

The cameraman had tried to save me at first, but by the time he snapped out of it, Morton and the rip current had already separated me.

Instead, he huffed and puffed his way to the director, urging him to clear the crowd immediately.

The live-streamed variety show had been ordered to be taken down entirely.

After the police left, Bensham rubbed his nose, looking a little uneasy.

I noticed his left hand trembling slightly.

Thinking the ordeal shook him, I was about to say a few words to comfort him.

But what he said next froze me on the spot.

"Emily, will you be with me?"

As he spoke, he pulled out a diamond ring so dazzling it could blind me.

Me:….

Is this the right moment for a confession?

Suppressing my desire for the diamond ring, I politely declined, "No thanks, I firmly believe in staying single.

Bensham, however, wasn’t having it. He grabbed my hand and slid the ring onto my finger.

"I don’t need a title."

I stared at the sparkling ring and reluctantly covered it with my other hand.

"All right, I’ll… think about it."

A month later, I arrived on set.

It was around this time that I learned of Morton’s sentencing.

For two counts of attempted murder, with no remorse shown and the severity of his actions considered, he was given a hefty prison sentence.

Since the start of filming, the director has been thoroughly impressed with me.

He discovered that I had skills in almost every area, which saved the crew much money on hiring outside professionals.

"James, I think it’s time for a raise," I said with a sly grin.

"Next time, for sure!" James replied, brushing it off with an equally playful tone.
