Chapter 20 Death visited
Ezekiel’s eyes widened. For the first time in history, he was utterly speechless, left dumbfounded for real, not knowing what to do. After so many years, he had gotten to feel this feeling: fear.
It gripped his skin like icy fingers, making goosebumps arise from his smooth skin. He watched his mother as she roared furiously with hunger, ready to attack him instantly. His mother, who once looked at him with warmth, now saw him as nothing but food.
Her elongated sharp black nails, which were about to touch his skin, were grabbed by Lord Raphael.
“Ezekiel! Are you crazy? Come on, let's stop this!” the Lord shouted at the top of his voice, snapping Ezekiel back to reality.
He looked at Lord Raphael, eyes widened, as he watched the scene of his mother let loose. She was now a reaper vampire—too hungry and already transformed to even recognize anyone, including her own son. She was about to pierce her sharp black long nails into Lord Raphael, who was trying to keep her at bay, when he used his bare hands, sending a punch right into her skull, making her run in the other direction seeking prey to devour.
Her neat hair was now messy and dirty. Her slender skin was wrinkled and creaky. Her red eyes were now crimson and bloodstained, and her teeth were clenching, looking for fresh blood. Not only her, but the majority of their family members were in that state, including some of the elite pureblooded families who were in the hall. Everywhere was in complete chaos. Many had turned into reapers, while those that hadn’t transformed were being attacked by the reapers. Loved ones attacking loved ones, children dying like chickens.
Watching his mother run, Ezekiel heard a roar behind him. He turned, seeing his would-be fiancée. Her eyes were bloodstained crimson. Blood was all over her, and it was obvious that she had killed about three people by now. She leaped on Ezekiel, and he stretched his left hand upwards. Her neck appeared to land on his fingers, making it effortless for his sharp fingernails to penetrate her neck. She dropped down on the floor sluggishly, dead.
He turned around, seeing many people still transforming and many trying to run from the already transformed vampires.
He knew it—there was a witch in this mansion, and he was well aware of that. A witch had poisoned their food. The first place to start the investigation was the kitchen, the maids.
So many maids were killed and littered the ground, their heads barely on their necks. His eyes swept all over the place. His heart jumped; his mind drifted back to Evan.
…
“Haha, you're in love!” the rabbit screamed, trying to move, though it was completely useless. If the bunny rabbit were allowed to move its body, it would’ve been dancing by now happily.
“Just tell him you like him, what's the big deal? You're still young, I mean too young to be with the duke, plus you're human, so I advise you to just let the feelings go,” blabbered the rabbit. “If you let me out of here, I'll teach you how to win his stonehearted heart. I'll make him love you—just get me OUT!!”
It was a waste of time, as the girl was no longer in the present world. Even if she was, her mind wasn’t.
Knock knock!
A loud bang erupted outside the door as if it would shake the door down at any moment.
Evan was startled by the unexpected sound. The door flew open without Evan opening it, and in front of it stood Mrs. Donovan.
Evan’s heart jumped at Mrs. Donovan’s appearance.
“R-reaper?” she stammered fearfully, her knees shaking.
“Yes! Yes! Run!!” said the bunny. He was actually happy that he was inside a rabbit. The only person who could hear him talk was Evan, so he was 100% safe.
Not knowing what to do, Evan struck her hand, but nothing worked. She had just found out about this new power and didn’t know how it worked.
The vampire leaped on her, ready to devour her, when something sharp pierced directly into her chest while still holding her in the air. Ezekiel dug out her heart and held it in his hands. His very own mother’s heart. The fear he felt a while ago vanished into the clouds, into nothingness.
Evan was flabbergasted.
“There he is! Prince charming! He came to rescue Snow White,” said the rabbit joyfully, and he himself couldn't fathom why he was happy for the girl's survival—someone he had wanted to kill all this while.
Mrs. Donovan dropped down to the ground in death. Evan stared at the deep hollow hole in her chest. Her eyes drifted to Ezekiel’s hand, seeing the heart in it.
She was now fully convinced that this was all a nightmare she had to wake up from. She rubbed her eyes, trying to wake herself up from the horrible nightmare, but for some kind of reason, she wasn't waking up.
“Follow me,” she heard the duke’s voice as he threw the heart on top of his mother’s body, stepping out of the room. Evan followed his trail, her head trying to predict what was happening. She began hearing echoes of scary creatures; even running was required to keep up with his speed.
Crying of people could be heard inside the basement, mixed with the roaring of reaper vampires. They successfully left the maids’ basement into the corridor leading to the kitchen. It was quite quiet here, and that was the scariest part. Ezekiel went to the sitting room where dead bodies littered the area.
“Oh, Lord of the heavens!” Evan exclaimed as she covered her mouth. Tears streamed down from her eyes. Many people, including children, lay lifeless, covered in red crimson.
The aura of the sitting room was petrifying. The reaper vampires began dying as the Lord released a red gas into the air. Evan saw the gas floating in the air and noticed it was killing the reapers.
It was truly a disaster. She immediately gripped Ezekiel’s hand and moved closer to him. Zeke didn’t pay attention to her action—after all, who wouldn’t be scared at a scene like this? Only him, probably, because he is heartless.
He had been scared at first, scared of losing his mother. Apart from that, he had seen many scenarios identical to this one.
Moments passed by, and all the reaper vampires gradually died due to the red gas. Ezekiel gathered the surviving ones into the sitting room. He wanted to know who was behind this, no matter what. He had killed his own mother; he wouldn’t let this slide.
Some elite pureblooded vampire families had already left with their surviving individuals.
All the maids were sitting on the floor, while the surviving Donovan family members were seated on chairs. Some were injured, and some could barely sit. Zeke walked in circles, examining everyone’s face. Lord Raphael just stood in a corner as he watched the boy do his job. He had taught the boy well over the years.
On the ground sat the maids, who had been reduced from fifty to twelve—only three surviving maids, while the rest were coachmen. Evan made it four surviving maids.
“This tragedy—there is someone behind it. I won’t stop until I find out who did it.” His voice was chilling, and even Lord Raphael’s skin popped up with goosebumps.
