Chapter 41 Post mortem - Vincent
"I sent you an email of the post mortem on Amber." Detective Jones says on the phone.
"Thanks." I end the call and look at the treadmill that is not going to wait for me to run on it.
It feels like hell having to get up in the morning at the crack of dawn, especially when you have a naked wife in there who likes getting fucked even when she pretends not to. I could use a fucking vacation from all this damn mess, take Lily to the lake house for a whole week and just forget about shit for once.
I run until my legs are weak, skipping weights before taking a shower in the downstairs gym and going to the library to open my emails. One of the maids bring me my customary morning espresso while I'm working.
It seems like Amber was shot once in the head execution style. It's a clean and efficient kill. She was also not pregnant, that fucking bitch. She came in here causing havoc. The question is still who the hell hired her, because someone certainlly did, or someone approached her to fuck with me and she was too damn eager to help.
Maybe I should've picked my sex mates a little better.
I skip breakfast and drive to Elio's parents' house where he's been staying since they discharged him from the hospital.
"He's still sleeping." My uncle frowns when he opens the door. "I'm sure whatever you want can wait until later, Vincent."
"Sorry uncle." I don't listen to what he says and go to Elio's old bedroom and immediately go inside. He looks so much better than what he looked like in the hospital, even though he's still recovering. "Elio?"
Like always, he wakes up quickly. That's the thing in this business, you don't get to sleep in like normal people and normal working hours, you always have to be ready to go.
"Vincent." He looks momentarily confused. "What are you doing here?"
"I need you to remember what happened at Amber's apartment." I tell him. "I have to know if she said anything."
He blinks, confused, and I sigh. He can't remember anything, meaning he probably won't help with any information. I have nothing, no answers. It's fucking frustrating.
"I told you I don't remember anything." He groans and closes his eyes. "But if I find her, she's fucking dead."
"You're too late." I deadpan, wondering if nobody told him about her murder, or if he just can't remember it either. "She's already dead."
"You killed her?" He asks, unsurprised.
"Not me." I shake my head. "But whoever did it, is going to try and frame me for it. So please, if you remember anything, you have to tell me."
He nods, but still looks confused. I feel really bad for him, and I wonder if we will ever get the old Elio back, and if I have to start thinking of who will be my second in demand for when I take over from my father.
"Rest brother." I pat his shoulder. "Get better please, I need you."
"Give me one month, I will be back!" He shouts after me as I leave his room, his father waiting for me outside.
"How is he really doing?" I ask as he follows me downstairs.
"He seems to be doing well. The only thing he doesn't remember is the day of the attack." Uncle Tommaso sighs. "He doesn't like being holed up here, that's for sure."
"I'll make sure to come visit often." I hug him before leaving and driving back home, finding Frank waiting for me.
"I just wanted to tell you that Lily has a coffee meeting with her professor after classes." He tells me with raised eyebrows. "She asked me not to be so visible because it might make other people uncomfortable."
I raise my eyebrows. I don't really care if it makes her uncomfortable or not, she's not going anywhere without Frank, her safety is at the top of my priority list, even if that list is a little overwhelming at the moment.
"Who the hell is this professor?" I want to know. "Are professors even supposed to have coffee with students?"
"It's apparently part of discussing portfolios or something. But don't worry, I will find a way to keep her in my sight without being too obvious."
"She just has to get used to you being there, or no college." If she heard that, she would probably kick me in the balls.
I don't want her having coffee with any man other than me, but I did promise her she could attend college, and I know that means she has to interact with other people. But if one of them gets a little too close for comfort, I will kill them, and I won't leave any bodies behind for the cops to find.
