Chapter 32

Zone Zero did not feel like a place. It felt like a memory held too tightly. As Elara crossed its border with Xavion, Kezra, Ril, and Jun behind her, the sky fractured into pale veils of shifting color. Trees bent inward toward one another, their leaves whispering nonsense in voices almost familiar. The moss was soft, unnaturally so, as if walking on woven strands of forgotten thought. "Don't speak names," Jun warned. His voice carried too far, echoing oddly. "The anomaly clings to them." Elara nodded. They had already begun to understand the rules of this strange terrain: names could summon echoes, memories could manifest physically, and fears had weight. Xavion was tense beside her, his tail twitching. His form had subtly shifted in response to the anomaly-his claws translucent, eyes deeper, like windows into unformed space. "You feel it?" she asked him, silently. He gave a single, grim nod. It watches. Hours passed in silence as they navigated a labyrinth of shifting terrain.

Kezra led them through a forest that grew backward, with branches that rewound themselves when broken. Ril's scanner clicked erratically, then shut down completely. "I'm not getting readings anymore," he muttered. "This place isn't just immune to Diver tech-it feeds off of it." Jun grunted. "This is pre-tech. Pattern in its rawest, most primal form." "What does it want?" Elara asked. Jun hesitated. "Maybe... to be understood." By evening, they found the First Spiral. It wasn't a structure. Not in the normal sense. It rose from the ground like a giant fossilized tendril, winding upward into the fog. Embedded in it were relics of every age: Diver sigils, human carvings, glowing plants, and fragments of old settlements. "It's... a timeline," Ril breathed. Elara approached it carefully. Each ring of the spiral pulsed differently-some glowed gold, others a deep black-blue. The nearer she got, the more her skin tingled. Suddenly, the spiral flared, and a voice whispered: "Elara." She froze. The others hadn't heard it. "Elara of fire. Of fracture. Of flame." Still no reaction from the others. Only Xavion turned toward her, his expression darkening. "Speak," she whispered. "You are the question. And the answer. The ash and the root." Then silence. The spiral dimmed. They made camp near the spiral, though "sleep" was a fragile concept in a zone where time bent like reeds in wind. Elara dozed in fits, her dreams haunted by shifting eyes and phantom voices. At one point, she woke to see Lyra glowing faintly through her skin. "She's not afraid," she whispered. "No," Xavion said. "She belongs." The next day, they moved deeper. The terrain changed from forest to crystalline marsh. Pools reflected not their bodies, but their thoughts-floating images of memory and pain. Kezra paused by one pool and dropped to her knees. "I see her again," she whispered. "My mother. She's laughing this time." Elara crouched beside her. "It's not real." "I know," Kezra said. "But I needed to see it." Ril stared into another pool. "What do you see?" Jun asked. Ril's eyes widened. "The Diver leaving. A whole fleet. But not retreating. Scattering. Like they were afraid of what they left behind." Jun muttered something in a language none of them recognized. Elara stepped away from the pools, breathing heavily. Zone Zero wasn't merely a mutation. It was a recording. A living history. And maybe... a womb.

By nightfall, the terrain sharpened again. Now they walked through a valley of mirrored obelisks-each one reflecting different versions of themselves. In one, Elara saw herself alone. In another, she held Lyra's hand-but the world burned around them. In the final reflection, she saw herself as light. Just light. She touched it-and for a moment, became it. When she awoke, she was lying in the moss, Xavion holding her gently. "You were gone," he murmured. "I was... everywhere," she whispered. And Lyra was wide awake now. Kicking with purpose. They reached the center on the third day. The Core of Zone Zero. It was not a temple. It was a cradle. Inside a sunken basin, dozens of cocoon-like structures pulsed with light. Within them were forms-not quite human, not Diver, not Pattern-bound. But potential. Unborn things. Ideas waiting to become. Jun fell to his knees. "This... this is the Source. The Pattern's origin. It wasn't created-it was born. And it's still birthing." One of the cocoons opened. Inside was a small figure-childlike, translucent, glowing with gentle warmth. Elara stepped forward. The figure looked up at her with Lyra's eyes. Not a copy. A future. A possible Lyra, shaped by this place. She knelt before it. "What are you?" The child smiled. "I am what you allow me to be." Then it faded. They left the cradle in silence. No one spoke until they crossed back beyond the anomaly's edge. Even then, the world around them looked changed. Softer. Listening. Elara turned to the team. "We can't stay here. But we can't ignore it either." "We build a path to it," Kezra said. Jun nodded. "A corridor. A dialogue." Xavion looked at her. "You knew this was coming." "I felt it," she said. "But now I know." The Pattern wasn't just evolving. It was asking. And she was ready to answer.
