Chapter 8 An even more complicated day
NANCY'S POV
“Diana Landon?”
A sharp voice called out a couple of minutes later, after Chloe left me and Diana. She said something about seeing the school's administrator but I had no clue what in the world that was.
I didn't ask either.
When the person called out to Diana, I turned around as well, simply because I was curious to see who it was.
I'd already made the person out to be a female and turning around verified that. It was a middle aged woman in a professional attire.
At first glance, I could immediately tell that she was one of the lecturers here, besides the fact that she had a clipboard in her hold.
She was a typical educationer, with the glasses that stood tall and proud on her straight nose and the straightening of Diana's posture affirmed what I already deduced.
“Yes, ma’am?” She voiced respectfully. It caused me to tip my head a little bit in greeting too.
The woman acknowledged me with a curious but polite smile but didn't say anything to me and kept speaking to Diana instead.
“I need a word with you about the summer schedule.”
Diana winced “Now?”
She tried not to make it too obvious that she was reluctant to go but I spotted it immediately.
The woman added, unassuming, “Yes. It will only take a minute of your time.
Diana nodded then turned to address me quickly. “Nancy, I'll need you stay right here, okay? I’ll be back in like five minutes."
"Don't go anywhere, I'll be right back," She reiterated.
I wanted to scoff and ask her if I even knew my way around enough to go anywhere but didn't because of the other woman's presence. It felt rude to do that in her face so I nodded. “Sure, I'll wait for you.”
It seemed Diana was satisfied with my response because she gave me a reassuring smile before making her way after the woman who had already taken the lead.
My gaze trailed them until they rounded a corner and soon after they were out of sight, I gave a soft exhale.
Twisting my neck, I glanced around at the unfamiliar faces and figures that surrounded me, with the realization that I was alone in a place where no one knew me enough to walk up to me.
A couple of minutes later, Chloe returned. Her brows arched slightly and I guessed that was because she didn't see Diana.
I was right.
"Where's Diana?" She asked.
My lips parted but no words came out. How was I to describe that she had left with someone I didn't know?
Chloe must have realised that she was barking the wrong tree because she waved her hand a minute later, "Don't bother, Nancy. I think I know exactly where she went."
I was surprised that she knew my name but was even more surprised at her next statement.
"I'm heading to class now, will you come with me?"
"Oh no, thank you," I shook my head hurriedly. "Diana asked me to wait for her. Thank you though."
"Are you sure?" Chloe's face creased slightly.
"Yes," I nodded.
She seemed to accept my answer because she gave a nod of her own before saying, "Are you sure you will be fine on your own? I could wait with you if you want."
"It's fine really," I smiled at her.
She smiled back then gave me a light wave before walking away.
"I'll See you around, Nancy.” She threw over her shoulder.
“See you," I called out, still smiling at her gradually retreating figure.
My smile waned right after and I backtracked to the wall and leaned into it, glancing around my surrounding again.
I wasn't alone but I was lonely and for the briefest second, I wondered if this was how Nathan had felt when he left home to an unfamiliar place.
The saddening part was that I wasn't even in contact with him, so I couldn't ask him.
I sighed again then shifted my weight from one foot to the other, sure that I painted quite the picture of an outcast.
Diana had told me she would be gone for only Five minutes but the five minutes minutes was beginning to stretch forever even though I told myself I could wait.
It only took about a couple of minutes before I became restless.
My eyes drifted across the hallway again.
Students were still moving everywhere. Voices overlapped, and somewhere in the distance, I could make out a bell ringing.
Curiosity started to itch under my skin until I couldn't keep a hold on it any longer.
I bit my lips briefly then released it with a breath, "I mean..."
"It wouldn’t hurt to look around a little, right?" I said to no one in particular.
I glanced in the direction Diana had disappeared, bolstering my courage to take a quick walk around.
Nothing dramatic.
I adjusted my bag on my shoulder then slowly began to make my way down the hall, fixing my gaze so I wouldn't look like I was wandering.
It was amusing because I had totally assured Diana I would wait then said the same to Chloe.
The campus really was beautiful up close.
Flower beds lined the paths and benches were situated under large branching tress.
There were even groups of students that lounged on the grass like they had nowhere better to be.
For a moment, I actually forgot to be nervous.
Until I slammed into someone with a loud thud.
Whoever it was i walked into definitely had solid muscle because why did my forehead hurt so much.
What more, it was a pair of strong hands that had caught me before I could completely lose my balance.
“Whoa...Careful.” A deep warm voice sounded out atop me.
A male definitely and he was very close to me.
"Sorry, I wasn't looking where I was..."
My heart gave a startled leap when I looked up, and I froze in shock.
He was pretty.
It was never a right adjective to describe a male but that was the first word my brain supplied.
Because the guy standing in front of me was good-looking. He was so pretty it hurt. Like a porcelain from ancient days that required care.
He was tall and lean and he had dark hair that fell slightly over a pair of sharp eyes that were currently watching me with mild amusement.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” I blurted out quickly, heat rushing to my face.
His lips curved slightly. “You usually walk into strangers, or am I special?”
I blinked.
Then blinked again.
Well...
This day just got more complicated.
