Her Plea

Her Plea
\[William’s POV\]
I walk down the long hall, listening to the sound of the prisoners as they scream and beg for forgiveness and freedom. It’s pathetic since they should know that it would do them no good. They committed the crimes, and because of that, they would need to do the time.
Like you did after being responsible for many deaths? The small voice in the back of my head asks, causing a pang of pain to shoot through me.
I want to tell it that that is different, but even now I know that it isn’t. If I didn’t get involved with those who were lost to begin with, then they wouldn’t be gone now. They would certainly be living their lives happily.
Well, that is what I would like to believe, but there was the case of Elise, who was reborn as someone completely different and currently dwelling in that person with absolutely no memories of her past.
This could be for the best. The small voice pushes. This way she doesn’t remember that you were the one to lead her to her death.
As it speaks, I feel the hole in my heart growing bigger, but I don’t let my self-loathing get the better of me. Instead, I focus on the single door ahead of me with a square window allowing me to see the person within.
“You’ve come.” Lydia giggles, lifting her gaze to mine. “Does this mean that you have accepted our child?”
“I’ve done no such thing.” I counter, pulling the key to the door out of my pocket. “I simply came to check something.”
Earlier on I spoke with Crystal Fang’s medic and discovered that if I were to withdraw Lydia’s blood, there was a chance that a few of the pup’s cells would be within it. If they were, then he could get a DNA analysis to determine if I was in fact the father.
Of course, the chances of that were pretty slim given the steps I took to make sure it couldn’t happen, but nothing was one hundred percent certain.
‘Should have kept it in your pants.’ Rue chuckles, only adding to my bad mood. ‘Then you wouldn’t be in this mess.’
Sighing, I don’t bother responding. Instead, I enter Lydia’s cell and then take her in. She looks too comfortable sitting there on her cot with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She smiles at me, and her eyes are filled with a hope that makes me feel a bit uncertain.
“So, what is it that you want to check?” She asks, her lips twitching into a smile. “Or is that just an excuse to see me?”
As she speaks, she slowly stands and starts to move toward me but stops as the single chain attached to her ankle catches.
“You are quite deluded.” I murmur, pulling the needle I’m carrying out of my pocket. “I’ve only come to collect your blood.”
“What?” She hisses, her gaze shooting to the needle. “What did you say you were doing?”
“Collecting your blood.” I repeat. “Is there a problem?”
For a moment she doesn’t speak as she stares at me in disbelief. It’s clear from the look in her eyes that she wasn’t expecting this to happen.
“Are you certain you’re not trying to inject me with something that will kill our pup?” She demands, retreating. “Stay away from me!”
“I may be a miserable bastard, but I’m not that cruel.” I huff. “If I wanted the pup dead, I would have let you throw yourself down the steps at that time.”
“You’re lying!” She wails, dropping onto her bed. “YOU’RE LYING!”
Fighting the urge to knock her out so I didn’t have to listen to her cries, I move forward and then wrap a hand around her wrist.
“LET GO!” She screams, attempting to fight me. “LET GO! GUARDS! GUARDS! HELP ME!”
“They work for me.” I sigh, trying to straighten her arm. “They aren’t going to listen to you.”
“YOU CRUEL MAN!” She cries, tears pouring down her red face. “HOW CAN YOU KILL AN INNOCENT BABY!”
Opening my mouth, I prepare to argue with her, but I stop as I realize that nothing I say is going to stop her from believing what she wants and that it would be a waste of my energy to even say anything more.
That’s why I pull on her arm once more, and with one quick movement, I jab the needle into it and watch as her blood starts to fill it.
“NO! NO! LET GO OF ME! LET GO!”
“Sure,” I smirk, releasing her so she slams her body against the wall behind her. “I’ve got what I needed anyway.”
Pulling the used needle off the syringe, I shove it back into my pocket and then turn. As I take a single step forward, I feel Lydia’s body press against my back, and when her arms wrap around me, I fight the urge to break them.
“Please don’t leave me.” She hiccups. “Please stay here with me. I’ll be obedient. I’ll do whatever you want. Just don’t leave me.”
“Let go.” I sigh, wanting to give her a chance to do what she should.
“I don’t want to.” She snaps. “Do you know how lonely it is in this cell?”
Did she have split personalities or something? One minute she was insisting that I was trying to kill her baby, and now she was begging me to stay? How ridiculous.
Letting out a growl of annoyance, I reach down and wrap my hands around her wrists but stop as my phone begins to ring.
“Who on earth?” I sigh, reaching into my pocket and pulling it out to see Jose’s name on the screen. “Why is he calling?”
Instantly, Elise and Serenity’s faces appear in my mind, and I feel my heart squeeze in fear that something may have happened during the time that I wasn’t there.
“Hello?” I ask after the second ring. “What’s up?”
“William,” Jose responds. “Am I bothering you at a bad time?”
For a moment, I don’t respond as I look down at the arms still wrapped around and note the weight against my back.
“A bit,” I admit. “But it’s fine. Did something happen?”
“About that.” I wait as he grows quiet, clearly debating on what he should say.
“Just spit it out.” I snap. “You didn’t call me for no reason.”
“Nothing gets past you.” He chuckles. “You see, the thing is, things aren’t looking so great back at New Moon.”
At his words, I feel my body go on alert, and I fight the urge to rush right over there right now.
“What happened?” I ask, fighting my irrational thoughts. “Was it Ezekial?”
“And Forrest.” Jose admits.
Forrest.
For a moment I rack my brain trying to remember who exactly that is until a snobby blue-haired brat appears in my mind.
“What has he done?” I demand. “Did he cause trouble?”
“He betrayed us.” Jose responds. “He has been working with Ezekial the entire time. Not only that,” he continues, his voice growing grim. “But his blood is also special.”
“Special how? You need to spit everything out instead of leaving me asking questions.”
“New Moon is currently surrounded by deranged wolves.” He explains, and my heart falls to my feet. “Rosco is amongst them.”
“How did that even happen?” I roar, ripping Lydia’s arms off of me and storming forward. “What the hell have all of you been doing?”
