Chapter 62: Aftermath
"He's not breathing!" Aurora screamed, putting her hands to Caleb's chest. The black mist had disappeared inside him, leaving his body still and cold on the forest floor.
Lucian dropped to his knees beside them, his face twisted with fear. "Caleb! Come back to us!"
Tobias pushed through the crowd, his injured shoulder forgotten. "Move back! Give him air!" His voice cracked as he met Aurora's frightened eyes across Caleb's motionless body.
Around them, the stone circle was in chaos. Former shadow wolves stumbled in confusion while pack members from both sides tried to make sense of what had happened. Victor's empty body lay close, a lifeless shell abandoned by its last shadow.
"The shadow jumped from Victor to Caleb," Serena explained, kneeling beside her brother. "We need to get it out before it takes root."
"How?" Lucian asked, gathering Caleb into his arms. "Tell me how!"
"The twin flame," Aurora whispered, her eyes widening with understanding. "I can feel him—he's still there, fighting the shadow." She grabbed Caleb's hand, squeezing it tight. "I can reach him through our bond."
A howl cut through the night. At the edge of the clearing, three shadow-eyed wolves appeared—the last of Victor's loyal following.
"We need to move," Tobias said, scanning the area. "They'll be after Caleb now. The shadow inside him will call to them."
"The cabin," Lucian decided. "It's closest. We'll barricade ourselves there until we figure this out."
Together, they lifted Caleb's body. As they began to move, Aurora kept her hand firmly in her brother's, refusing to break their link.
"I'm not letting you go," she whispered to him. "Fight it, Caleb. I'm right here."
Pain. Darkness. Cold.
Caleb floated in a sea of shadows, trying to remember who he was. Each time he grabbed at a memory, the darkness swallowed it, pulling him deeper.
"You're mine now," a voice hissed in his mind. Not Victor's voice—something older, hungrier. "The perfect vessel."
He tried to scream, but had no voice. Tried to move, but had no body. The shadow was everywhere, filling every corner of his mind.
Then, through the darkness—a thread of blue light. Faint at first, then getting stronger.
Aurora.
Her presence pierced the dark like a beacon. Caleb reached for it desperately, clinging to the link with his twin.
"Fight it," her voice repeated. "I'm right here."
The shadow shrieked in fury, trying to sever their link, but the blue light held firm. Through it, Caleb could see glimpses of the outside world—trees rushing past, worried faces, the inside of a cabin.
"I'm trying," he pushed the thought through their bond, hoping she could hear him. "Don't let go."
"He's still fighting," Aurora said as they laid Caleb on the bed in the cabin's main room. Sweat beaded on her forehead from the effort of keeping their connection. "I can feel him."
Lucian paced the small room, his eyes never leaving Caleb's face. "What do we do? How do we get that thing out of him?"
Serena moved quickly around the house, gathering candles and salt. "We need to strengthen the twin bond. If Aurora can reach him, they can push the shadow out together."
Tobias positioned himself at the window, keeping watch. "Those shadow wolves are still out there. They're circling the cabin."
"Let them," Lucian growled. "Anyone who tries to enter dies."
Outside, the wolves howled, the sound strangely synchronized. More were joining them.
Aurora sat beside Caleb, still holding his hand. Blood trickled from her nose from the effort of fighting through the shadow's barrier.
"You're bleeding," Serena noticed, running to her side.
"I'm not stopping," Aurora said strongly. "He would do the same for me."
Thorne burst through the door, startling everyone. "We've got trouble. More of Victor's loyalists are coming—at least fifteen wolves. And they all have shadow-eyes."
"How is that possible?" Tobias asked. "We destroyed the shadows in the circle."
"Not all of them," Aurora said grimly. "The one inside Caleb is calling to others—waking them up. There must be more dormant shadows out there."
"Victor's plan," Serena realized. "It was bigger than we thought."
Aurora nodded, her face pale. "I was his prisoner for three months. He talked about 'the awakening'—bringing shadow spirits into our world on a massive scale."
"You were captured?" Tobias asked, surprise clear in his voice. "We didn't even know you existed until recently."
A sad smile crossed Aurora's face. "Victor found me first. He's been looking for all three of us for years. When he discovered I was Caleb's twin, he was... ecstatic." She shuddered at the thought. "Said we were the key to everything."
"Why?" Lucian asked, joining them by the bed.
"Twin Bondspeakers are rare. Our power together is... explosive. You saw what we did at the circle." Aurora looked down at Caleb's pale face. "Victor wanted to use us to open a permanent gateway to wherever these shadow spirits come from."
A crash from outside made them all jump. Something heavy had been thrown against the cabin wall.
"They're testing our defenses," Thorne said, going to another window.
Serena finished placing candles in a circle around the bed. "We don't have much time. Aurora, we need to try now."
Aurora nodded, taking a deep breath. "What do I do?"
"Focus on your bond with Caleb. Pour all your strength into it. The twin flame you created before—we need it again."
In the darkness of his mind, Caleb felt the shadow's grip tightening. It was eating him piece by piece, memory by memory.
"Your pack doesn't want you," it whispered. "They never did. You were always alone."
"No," Caleb fought back. "I have my sisters. I have Lucian and Tobias."
The shadow laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "They only want your power. Once the shadow takes you completely, they'll abandon you."
Doubt crept in, cold and familiar. Had he ever truly belonged anywhere?
Then—warmth. The blue thread connecting him to Aurora pulsed, getting brighter.
"Caleb," her voice came through clearly now. "Remember who you are. Remember us."
Images flooded his mind—playing with Aurora as a child before they were divided, finding Serena again, Lucian's fierce protection, Tobias's unwavering loyalty.
"They love you," Aurora's voice urged. "And I need my brother back."
The blue light grew, filling more of the darkness. Caleb reached for it, feeling strength return to his spirit.
"Together," he pushed the thought toward her. "Twin flames."
In the cabin, Aurora gasped as blue light suddenly surrounded her hand where it joined with Caleb's. Serena stepped back in awe as the light spread, engulfing both twins.
"It's working," she whispered.
Outside, the shadow wolves howled louder, sensing the danger to their kind. Wood splintered as they began to break through the blocked windows.
"Hold them off!" Lucian ordered, changing into his wolf form. Tobias and Thorne did the same, positioning themselves at the three openings.
The blue light around the twins grew blinding. Aurora's body rose slightly off the floor, floating inches above the ground as power coursed through her.
"Come back to me, Caleb," she called, her words echoing strangely in the charged air. "Push it out!"
The shadow screamed as blue fire consumed it from within. Caleb felt his power returning, his sense of self reforming as the creature weakened.
"You can't defeat me," it hissed desperately. "I am ancient. I am eternal."
"But I'm not alone," Caleb answered, gathering his power. With all his might, he pushed against the shadow, pushing it toward the light of his bond with Aurora.
"TOGETHER!" they shouted as one, their sounds bridging the gap between worlds.
The shadow spirit shrieked one final time as the twin flame engulfed it fully.
A burst of blue light exploded outward from the twins, so strong it shook the entire cabin. The shadow dogs outside scattered, howling in pain as the light touched them.
Caleb's body convulsed once, then his eyes flew open, gasping for air. Black mist poured from his mouth, dissolving in the blue flame before it could escape.
"Aurora," he croaked, his voice raw.
She fell beside him, both of them drained but alive. "We did it," she whispered.
Lucian rushed to Caleb's side, his wolf form turning back to human in an instant. "Caleb!" He gathered his mate into his arms, holding him tightly.
"The shadow," Caleb managed, his voice weak. "Is it gone?"
"Yes," Serena agreed, checking him over. "You pushed it out."
Outside, the screaming had stopped. Tobias peered through a broken window. "The shadow wolves are retreating."
Relief filled the room, but it was short-lived. Caleb sat up suddenly, his eyes wide with fear.
"No," he gasped. "No, no, no."
"What's wrong?" Lucian asked, concerned by the sudden change.
Caleb's hands shook as he touched his chest, feeling for something that wasn't there. "The pendant. My Bondspeaker pendant—it's gone."
Aurora paled. "The shadow must have taken it when it left you."
"Why would it want your pendant?" Tobias asked, moving closer.
Caleb looked up, his face ashen. "Because Victor was right. The ritual isn't over. It's just beginning."
"What do you mean?" Serena asked.
"When the shadow was inside me, I saw its plans." Caleb's voice shook. "The shadow pool Victor mentioned—it's real. And with my pendant, they can use it to open a permanent gateway."
"To what?" Lucian asked.
"To their world." Caleb looked at each of them in turn, his eyes haunted. "An entire dimension of shadow spirits waiting to cross over."
As if to prove his words, a distant rumble shook the ground beneath them. Miles away, at the heart of the mountains, a shaft of black light shot into the night sky.
"It's already starting," Aurora whispered.
"And I showed them how to do it," Caleb said, his voice shaking. "When I was fighting the shadow, it read my thoughts. It took everything I knew about Bondspeaker magic."
The ground shook again, stronger this time. Pictures fell from the walls as everyone fought to keep their balance.
"What happens now?" Thorne asked, saying what they were all thinking.
Caleb met Aurora's eyes, their twin link pulsing with shared dread.
"The end of everything," he said softly. "Unless we stop it."
