Chapter 58 You Are My Savior
Andrew's voice caught, thick with sudden emotion. "It was that spring... I was on my way to the hospital when my asthma hit hard. Worse than it had ever been. My doctor had run out of the right medication, traffic was locked in every direction, and the hospital helicopter couldn't reach me... You were the one who saved me."
The memory cut clear and vivid. He could still see it.
When he'd thought his lungs would give out, a young girl in a pale blue shirt, a backpack slung over her shoulders, had rushed toward him without hesitation.
With her help, Andrew had held on until the ambulance arrived.
As he spoke, a fragment of the past surfaced in Caroline's mind—one she had almost forgotten.
Yes... it had happened. She remembered leaving a lecture she had been sitting in on, hurrying toward the library, when she heard a commotion by the roadside. An elderly man clutched his chest, his face turning a dangerous shade, while people around him froze in panic.
She hadn't hesitated. She had gone straight to him, doing what she could to help.
Later, the man's staff had thanked her quickly before the ambulance whisked him away. She hadn't asked his name. She had simply gone on with her day.
"When I was out of danger," Andrew continued, "I tried to find the girl who had saved my life. I wanted to thank her in person. But the scene had been chaos, and all I knew was what someone had glimpsed—your backpack had a name tag that read 'Caroline.' I asked at the hospital, at the school... but nothing certain came back. Time passed, and it became a weight I carried quietly."
Andrew reached out, taking her hand in a firm clasp.
"I never imagined I would meet you again like this... or that you would be the Neville family's daughter, married to Mr. Hamilton."
He bent slightly, his voice deepening.
"Thank you for saving my life, Mrs. Hamilton."
Caroline froze.
She hadn't expected that a fleeting act of kindness, years ago, would be remembered so vividly.
Something unfamiliar stirred in her chest. For years she had grown used to being hated, accused, treated as if she were nothing but a burden. She had almost forgotten she had once been the kind of person who would help a stranger without thinking... someone who could be thanked, and remembered.
She wanted to tell him it was nothing, that it had been instinct, but the words wouldn't come.
Instead, she turned quickly toward Alexander.
Alexander had never heard this story. His eyes narrowed slightly, surprise flickering there.
He looked at her for a long moment, his expression hard to read.
He hadn't imagined she had moments like this—moments of quiet, uncalculated kindness.
Recovering quickly, he reached into the inside pocket of his suit, pulled out his phone, opened the notes app, and held it toward her.
"Type," he said softly.
A flicker of gratitude softened her gaze as she took the phone, her fingers trembling slightly as she typed with care.
It read: [Mr. Ford, you're too kind. It was only a small thing. I'm glad you recovered.]
Andrew's smile deepened, certainty lighting his features.
He gave her hand a gentle shake before releasing it, then took a card from his assistant and, with both hands, offered it to her.
"No matter what, I will remember this. This is my personal contact, Mrs. Hamilton. If you ever need anything, reach out to me."
Celeste felt her composure splinter.
Watching Caroline draw this kind of attention was worse than losing everything.
She had spent hours perfecting her look, maneuvered her way into the event, and even tracked down the fact that Andrew had once funded the orphanage she had lived in—hoping to use that connection to help Alexander.
She had thought it was fate that she had met Andrew.
Yet here he was, polite but distant toward her, while Caroline—who had done nothing—was receiving the Ford Group leader's gratitude and an open offer of help, all because of a single, unplanned act years ago.
And Alexander... he had passed her his phone without hesitation, helping her respond.
When had he ever been so considerate toward that woman?
Jealousy burned, splintering Celeste's smile.
She forced it back, leaning forward with a syrupy tone. "Mr. Ford, what a coincidence, you and Caroline having such a connection! It must mean we're all destined to know each other. By the way, Caroline isn't in great health... she can't speak, poor thing. Alex has always taken such good care of her."
Alexander's expression shifted.
He knew exactly what Celeste was doing, and it was graceless. Why interrupt like this? And why use such an intimate form of address in public?
Andrew's smile thinned.
He acted as if he hadn't heard the last part, nodding warmly to Caroline before turning to Alexander, his tone smooth. "Mr. Hamilton, about the cooperation we discussed earlier... I'd like to go over a few details. Would now be convenient?"
Alexander caught the cue instantly and nodded. "Of course, Mr. Ford. This way—we'll find somewhere quiet to talk."
He let his hand slide from Caroline's waist to her wrist, a subtle signal for her to follow, and moved with Andrew toward the lounge.
"I'm very interested in shipping," Celeste said quickly, stepping forward before they could leave her behind. "I've read quite a bit on the subject. Mr. Ford, Alex, do you mind if I listen in? I could take notes for you."
Alexander's brow tightened, just enough to show his impatience.
Her obliviousness was wearing thin.
But with Andrew watching, he couldn't rebuke her outright.
He glanced at Andrew, silently asking for his view.
Andrew's eyes swept over Celeste. His smile was polite but cool. "If you're interested, of course. But it might be a little dull."
It was permission.
"Not dull at all," Celeste replied brightly. "It's an honor to learn from you both."
She moved in close, taking the space at Alexander's other side.
Alexander said nothing more, only offering Andrew a courteous smile. "After you."
Caroline followed, her steps unsteady under Alexander's light grip.
She could feel his dissatisfaction, even though he had shielded Celeste from embarrassment.
If it had been Caroline, he might have snapped at her already.
She swallowed the ache tightening in her chest and kept walking, her face calm.
