Chapter 16: Marco

As we return to my den, I feel a mix of emotions brewing inside me. I can feel the energy coursing between us, evidence of the bond that has been formed through the mating dance we have just participated in. It’s an extraordinary feeling, one that I’ve never experienced before. I don’t know how to describe it, but it’s like Katina and I have connected in a way that goes beyond the physical or emotional levels.

The dance has amplified the intensity of our emotions tenfold, and I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by everything.

I also can’t help but feel a sense of unease gnawing at the pit of my stomach. Katina and I have connected on a level that I have never deemed possible. But just as much as I have enjoyed this newfound happiness, I’m apprehensive about the future.

My mind is racing with questions. Was asking Katina to be my pretend mate the right move? How long can we keep up the charade? And what’s going to happen when my real mate finally arrives?

I push these thoughts to the back of my mind as we enter my den, trying to savor the moment with Katina.

I take a deep breath, trying to stay grounded and focused. Katina looks at me and smiles, her eyes sparkling with joy. I can’t help but feel a sense of calm wash over me as I look at her. My mind drifts back to the reason we entered into this arrangement, to begin with. A pretend mate, nothing more than a means to an end. Being with Katina has made me reconsider my priorities. I can’t imagine a world without her now.

But then, there’s the thought of my real mate, and what her arrival will mean for us. The ceremony today has solidified my position as the Alpha, but it has also brought me one step closer to the inevitable. The time will come when my actual mate will arrive, and I’ll have to make some tough decisions.

I know that I did it for the sake of my pack, but now that the binding ritual has taken place, I’m not sure that I can keep up the charade between us. The way that I feel when I’m near her is too intense, too overwhelming. I’m afraid that I won’t be able to hide my feelings for her.

I begin to walk towards my work area, trying to put some distance between Katina and I, before I do something crazy like act on the emotions coursing through me, but she stops me with a hand on my arm.

"What's on your mind, Marco?" she asks, sensing something isn't quite right.

I'm stunned by her sharp intuition, but not altogether surprised. "Just thinking about everything that has happened in such a short amount of time," I say, choosing to be honest and open. “I feel like I have opened a door that I can’t close.”

Katina nods her head and squeezes my hand. "I know it must be overwhelming, but we'll make it through this together."

Her words of reassurance warm my heart, easing the anxiety that has been growing inside of me. I realize that I can't let my fears hold me back from this newfound happiness that fate has given me.

I can feel my heart pounding in my chest as I lean in towards Katina, without an ounce of hesitation. She looks up at me with those bright green eyes, and I find myself lost in her gaze.

I’ve been wanting to do this for weeks, but every time I’ve come close to making a move, something has held me back. But now, I can’t stop myself. I’m going to kiss her.

I lean in closer, and for a moment, I can feel Katina’s breath on my lips. It’s like electricity coursing through my body, and I can’t help but smile. I can tell that she’s nervous, too, but I need to do this. I need to let her know how I feel.

Before I can second-guess myself, I close the gap between us and press my lips to hers. It’s a soft kiss, but it’s filled with so much emotion. I can feel Katina’s arms wrap around my neck, and for a moment, I forget everything else in the world, as my body comes alive under her touch.

Katina pulls away first, her eyes wide with surprise, and we both stand there in silence, waiting for the other to say something. Despite the surprise in her gaze, there’s also something else there, something that tells me that maybe she feels the same way I do. And in that moment, I know that no matter what happens, I’m glad I took the chance and kissed her.

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my emotions, as I look at her.

"I just needed to do that," I say, finally breaking the silence.

Katina looks at me, a small yet hesitant smile playing at the corners of her lips. "It's alright, Marco. I wanted it too."

My heart sings with joy as she says those words, and I pull her into an embrace, feeling her soft body melt into mine. In that moment, all my fears and worries are swept away, and I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with her.

With Katina in my arms, I realize that this bond that we now share is more significant than anything that has come before.

It has changed me in ways that I never could have imagined, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to take on this new path with her.

As we stand there, lost in each other's embrace, I know that my pack will be safe in her hands. Together, we will face whatever challenges come our way, and we'll do it with all the love, strength, and courage that this bond has given us.

Katina may have belonged to someone else before, but now she belongs to me. I will protect her, and the pup she carries till the end of my last breath.
