Chapter 70 The Last Prenatal Checkup
Several boxes of exquisitely packaged imported fruits sat at the entrance, with foreign logos printed on them. They were clearly expensive, especially the Rubus illecebrosus raspberries—high-end items rarely seen on the market.
Emily commented: "He sure knows how to put on a show."
Matthew laughed: "He's probably trying to make his presence felt with these things."
Emily didn't care: "Take them all downstairs and split them among yourselves."
The servants were pleasantly surprised: "Really, Miss? These are very expensive imported fruits, and they're from Mr. Baker. Are you sure..."
"Take them." Emily didn't even want to look at them.
"Thank you, Miss! Thank you, Mr. Baker!"
Emily raised her eyebrows slightly and corrected them leisurely: "Why thank him? I'm the one giving them to you. Once things enter the Johnson family's door, they belong to the Johnson family and have nothing to do with anyone else."
The servants froze, then quickly caught on: "Yes, yes, yes, thank you, Miss!"
The tenderness in Matthew's eyes nearly overflowed.
He loved how Emily was now—carefree and uninhibited. More importantly, she was vibrant, no longer the person who used to revolve around Alex, carefully trying to please him.
He said, "We're flying to Paris the day after tomorrow. About the press conference—are you really planning to just go through the motions? Alex is stubborn. Once he decides on something, he won't change his mind easily. If you don't cooperate at all, he might use other ways to force you to attend."
Emily held the dessert the servant made and shrugged: "If I have to go, I'll go. Think of it as a free meal—no loss there. As for dressing up, I'll just wear something comfortable. Nothing to prepare."
Her mind was completely focused on her upcoming new life, so she couldn't be bothered wasting energy on these irrelevant people and matters.
Matthew chuckled helplessly and stopped persuading her: "Then take care of yourself and call me anytime if you need anything. I'll head back to handle some company matters and send you the Paris flight information later."
"Okay." Emily got up to see him to the door.
Only after watching Matthew's car slowly drive away did she turn back to the living room.
Emily sat on the sofa and let out a slow breath.
Others couldn't tell, but she knew her belly was growing every day.
After a while, she took out her phone to contact the private hospital from last time for one final prenatal checkup before going abroad.
Only after confirming the baby was healthy could she board the plane with peace of mind. However, just as her finger touched the contacts, an anonymous text message suddenly popped up.
The number was unfamiliar but local.
Emily raised an eyebrow and casually opened it.
"Miss Johnson, I'm sorry. The trending topics and posts from before were all my momentary confusion. I know I was wrong. Please be merciful and don't pursue this, okay? I'll never dare do it again!"
Emily looked at the message, her lips curling into a cold, mocking smile.
Momentary confusion?
They found a scapegoat pretty quickly.
Seeing that she was about to release all the evidence tomorrow, Grace panicked and paid someone to take the fall?
Ha, wanting to come out of this squeaky clean—as if that plan would work.
Her finger moved slightly, directly deleting and blocking the number. Thinking they could get away with it like this was too naive.
Putting away her phone, Emily grabbed her bag and prepared to go to the hospital.
Andrew had just come out of the study: "Emmie, you're going out? There are lots of reporters outside now, and the rumors haven't completely died down. Be careful going out alone. And you're going abroad the day after tomorrow—don't cause any more trouble, understand?"
Emily's heart warmed: "Don't worry, Dad. I'm just going out for some air. I'll be back soon."
Only then did Andrew relax: "Go ahead, come home early."
"Okay."
...
At the private hospital.
The environment here was discreet, and the medical staff were tight-lipped.
Emily navigated easily, heading straight to the VIP section of obstetrics and gynecology. The examination process went exceptionally smoothly.
The doctor carefully reviewed the ultrasound and various data, smiling: "The baby is very healthy and developing well. As long as you have regular checkups and get enough rest, there won't be any problems."
Emily's anxious heart finally settled: "Thank you, doctor."
She then walked out of the consultation room with the examination report, but unexpectedly ran into a familiar figure.
Emily froze. Alex's assistant?!
What was he doing here?
The assistant was also holding a medical report, looking hurried, clearly having just come down from upstairs.
Suddenly, their eyes met.
Assistant Chen stopped in his tracks, his face full of shock: "Miss Johnson? What are you doing here?"
His gaze unconsciously swept over the words "Obstetrics and Gynecology," and his pupils dilated in shock: "This is the obstetrics department... Are you... are you okay?"
Emily asked: "What, does the Baker family have shares in this hospital too?"
The assistant's mouth twitched: "No."
Emily said: "What else would I be checking at a hospital? Just making sure I didn't catch some dirty STD from your CEO."
The assistant gasped, cold sweat streaming down his forehead.
This... this... you can't say things like that!
He hurriedly explained: "You've misunderstood! Our Mr. Baker's private life is absolutely clean!"
Heh, he was so flustered he was becoming incoherent.
Emily remained calm and unhurried, completely unaware that he still had a Bluetooth earpiece in his ear.
And on the other end of the call.
The man's knuckles gripping the phone suddenly tightened, his face darkening terrifyingly.
He took a deep breath, suppressing his surging emotions, and spoke coldly into the phone: "Give her the phone."
The assistant was on the verge of tears, then stiffly disconnected the Bluetooth and held the phone out to Emily: "Miss Johnson, Mr. Baker... wants you to take the call."
Emily was speechless.
Now it was her turn to be surprised.
So their call had never been disconnected?
"Ahem." Feeling guilty, she took the phone and asked: "Does Mr. Baker need something?"
After two seconds of silence, a voice grinding through clenched teeth came through: "Emily, take me off your block list."
And right now he couldn't see any of Emily's social media updates, as if... he'd been completely shut out of her world.
This feeling of losing control made him extremely irritable.
Emily said: "Take you off? What kind of fantasy is Mr. Baker talking about?"
As soon as the words left her mouth, she hung up directly and casually tossed the phone back to the assistant.
The assistant held the phone, on the verge of tears.
It's over... Miss Johnson hung up on Mr. Baker and made him so angry. When he goes back, he'll definitely suffer—at best working overtime for half a month, at worst being transferred directly to a branch office.
Emily couldn't help but find his expression amusing. She stepped forward and patted his shoulder lightly, saying approvingly: "You've worked hard. Good luck when you get back."
With that, she picked up her bag and turned to leave with light steps.
This feeling was so much better than those three years!
