Chapter 14
I exited the office still shocked about the revelation: Killian had an older brother. It is a normal occasion to have a brother but I couldn't imagine Killian having one because the way he acted with his mom looked like he was an only child.
I quickly went to Killian's office trying to balance the donut, my phone, and the water bottle I was holding. I knocked on the wooden door with my leg.
I was trying to come up with excuses that didn't involve Nicole or me fainting in the elevator and his brother saving me.
Killian opened the door not even checking who was at the door. He was talking on the phone while standing before the glass wall that had an opened window. The office was cold due to the strong wind coming from the window. Before I could fully get into the office the door slammed right into me.
It made me lose my balance and fall right on my ass. The donuts, my phone, and the water bottle were all on the floor. I covered my mouth with my hands scared the donuts will be ruined. I wasn't even concerned about my phone or the painful and embarrassing fall I just had. My concern was for the donuts.
Killian had turned as soon as he heard the door slam right into me. He had a shocked expression on his face, his hand still holding his phone to his ear. He hung up the phone and came to me, his eyes never leaving the donuts. He stared at the donut as if he wanted to reverse time and catch it before it fell.
He is so going to kill me!
That was the only thought running in my head. I have made him wait this long and he couldn't even get to eat his donuts. I saw a flashlight go off and then a capturing sound. He was taking a picture of me. He was photographing my embarrassing moment. I tried to at least have some dignity and cover my face with my hands.
This is so humiliating!
I peeked through my hands to see if he was done capturing my unique way of posing for the camera. I didn't find a phone in front of me but an outstretched hand. Killian was offering his hand to pick me up, not the donut but me. I placed my hand into his cold hands.
He pulled me from the floor with little effort and I collided with his chest. He had one hand on my waist and the other was still holding my hand. I looked up at him my eyes the size of saucers. I had to crane my neck die to his tall figure while he just stared down at me. He was staring so intently at me, it felt like he could see right through me.
I saw his pouty lips moving, saying something I couldn't hear. His ocean blue eyes were not staring at me intently like earlier but they were shifting right to left restlessly. This woke me up from the daze I was in.
Killian took me to the leather couch and squatted in front of me placing his cool hands on my rather red face. He was getting touchy and he was not even realizing it. He looked a bit disturbed, making me wonder if I split my head into two. I was about to place my hand on my forehead to check if I was bleeding, but he caught my hand mid-air.
Was the slam so powerful it made me lose my senses? Why am I not feeling any pain?
“Could you please just sit still and not touch anything?” he said placing my hand on the couch.
He stood up and brought the water bottle, my phone, and the donut box from the doorway, putting them on his messy table. He then dialed a number on his phone and waited till the person picked. Jason was the first word he uttered when the phone was picked and then something about sending his secretary or bringing ice, he was talking with his voice low.
Jason and Killian reminded me of my childhood best friend a lot. Their dependency on each other reminded me of how my then best friend Leo and I had done everything together. It reminded me how I would always tell Leo first if anything was wrong. I always made sure he was the first to know everything that happened even before my mom did.
He was the first to know when my classmate told me he liked me. He was the first to know when I had a crush on a boy from his class. He was the first to know I was bullied by a girl in my class and he was the first to defend me. He was the kind of boy I would call a hero. He was my knight in shining armor. He was my prince charming.
I hissed when something freezing touched my forehead. It was startling to know I was so deep in my thoughts to realize Killian was squatting before me, gently pressing an ice cube on my forehead. Jason was behind him staring worriedly at me specifically at my forehead.
“Tell me how this happened again?” Jason inquired, puzzled how a person could injure themselves in a perfectly safe room. Killian told him what happened, his whole focus on treating the growing bump on my forehead.
“Dude, you remember that time in high school when we were ice skating and you fell on your face? Your forehead looked like you were growing horns! I haven't laughed like that since.” Jason said still laughing.
“Really, Jason? You remember that now? In front of her? Was that even necessary?” this time he paused and glanced at Jason.
I imagined Killian with a bump that looked like a horn and it was the funniest thing I could imagine. I laughed at Killian, Jason joining me. Killian was smiling too as his anger at Jason was not even real.
“I should've worn the helmet when you told me,” he said looking at his best friend reminiscing the old times.
“I didn't want to say 'I told you so,' but you made me do it,” said Jason, bringing his ringing phone out of his pocket and leaving the room to answer the phone after giving a sign to Killian about who was calling. Of course I didn't expect to know what the sign was about or who the caller was.
“Here take this,” he said giving me the ice to hold on to my forehead while he went to his desk and opened his drawer looking for something I didn't expect he would have. He brought a rectangular mirror and sat beside me. I was sure my face had that big question mark.
“Why do you–” he didn't even let me finish my question before he answered.
“None of your business.”
He took the ice from my hand and cringed. I repeat He cringed at the sight of my forehead. This got me seriously worried that it was not a tiny bump that would go away in a day. I took the mirror from his hand and took a deep breath before taking a look.
The bump was not as bad as I thought, it was merely an exaggeration from Killian. I've had worse things happen to my face. It was a bump that could go away in a day or two, although having a red bump on my forehead at this age was embarrassing.
“You scared me! I thought it was a huge bump.” I said relieved that it wasn't as much as he made it seem.
“It is huge! That is the only thing I can see on your face right now. Have you taken a proper look in the mirror?” he insisted pushing the mirror closer to my face.
“I am a clumsy person. I fall all the time. I've gotten used to it.” I replied lowering the mirror to make him understand that this is nothing.
I came face to face with Killian, he must've gotten close unconsciously when he was talking to me. I don't know how we've gotten this close but he was inches away from me. I felt everything suddenly fall silent, it was only my heartbeat disturbing the peace. It felt like I had stopped breathing and the slightest intake of breath would be heard as if over a microphone.
I opened my mouth to say something, utter a word but nothing came to mind. I've never been in a situation like this, No, I've never allowed myself to be with a man alone because it wasn't my priority at the time. That holds true even now.
I backed a little to create a little space between us, even though I was seated on the couch and had nowhere to go. I lowered my eyes and fiddled with the mirror handle out of nervousness. He got a lot closer than he was before and
Put his thumb under my chin making me look him in the eye.
I felt my palms get sweaty and my breathing was abnormal. He shifted his eyes from mine to my lips that felt like the Sahara desert. I wetted my cracked lips and he followed my every move like a predator hunting its prey. He got close to my lips and I shut my eyes on instinct.
Instead of feeling his lips on my lips, I felt his hot breath on my ear. His breath was tickling me and this time I wished I had my hair down instead of a bun. This time I wished I had dark skin so he couldn't see my beetroot face. He took his sweet time scaring the shit out of me before he spoke his true intention.
“Did you actually think I was going to kiss you?” he said smugly.
I didn't need to see his face to know that he was smirking. I didn't need to see his face to know that he was feeling triumphant to have pulled his little stunt successfully. I blamed myself for doing what he exactly wanted of me; to be weak. As we stared eye to eye, his eyes filled with accomplishment and mine with embarrassment, we failed to see the person who got into the office.
“What is going on here?” asked Ms. Grayson, her hands crossed across her chest.
