Chapter 37 037

Chapter 37 037
Danica's POV

"Don't be nervous, Doctor Dan. I know you'll kill it. Just for the records, I don't ever take my congratulations back" a voice whispered beside me as I strode into the clinic.

I smiled sweetly in response "Good morning to you too, Vera"

"Now, that sounds sarcastic" she chuckled childishly and I bit back a loud laugh.

"Whatever you think, Resident Vera. Now go do your morning rounds before Renee chews you out" I gave her a friendly reminder and her smile faltered.

"Right. Thanks for that reminder, I always need it to get a hold of my reality here" she muttered dramatically before walking off in a different direction.

I mean, it's easy for two people to miss each other here. That's how big the clinic is... I dunno why it's still referred to as a clinic instead of a hospital.

The Pack's Royal Hospital.

That sounded perfect.

"Miss Danica? These are the files for your next surgery" another voice muttered behind me and I turned to face another resident I recognized but didn't talk to unless it's important.

"Ah, thank you, Resident... Anna" I muttered with a smile after stylishly checking out her identity card.

"I wish you luck on this one" she muttered almost inaudibly as she turned to walk away.

Okay. That was... Weird. Or was it me?

Those doctors barely give a shit around here unless there's someone to humiliate. Though she seemed a bit nice, telling me good luck... Was definitely on another level.

And I received a document already two days ago, I had no idea why I'm getting another one right now. Unless, Renee suddenly cared enough to grant me a friendly reminder?

I closed the distance between where I was standing and my regular desk before while I went through the file. I blinked severally in awe as I went through the files over again, wondering if my eyes had suddenly begun to fail me.

But it hasn't. This was another file entirely. Different in many ways, many dimensions from what someone in trial was supposed to do.

After studying the file thoroughly, I figured out the patient's room number and I headed there. To see if it was as bad as the files explained.

It wasn't just as bad. It was worse. Far worse.

The supposed surgery isn't even for doctors with three years experience, not for two years and definitely not for starters... Like me. The last time there was a successful record of that kind of surgery was five hundred years ago. The doctor was a man and he died mysteriously. No one knows how he died whatsoever, till date, except the fact that he did die.

There must have been a mistake somewhere.

I walked out of the ward and headed straight to Renee's office.

"I doubt you have any time to wander around aimlessly when you have a big task ahead of you, Danica" Renee countered, her squared back to me as she slowly crossed her leg over the other.

Looks like she was enjoying the beautiful view of nature before my impromptu barg in.

And yes, she did sound angry... And satisfied, if I wasn't being paranoid.

"I think you might have given me the wrong file earlier." I stated clearly and she sighed in exasperation.

"No, it wasn't... A wrong file. You're working on that today, is there a problem with that?" She asked, turning her chair to face me.

Her sharp glare met mine and I almost cowered in fear. Almost.

But she had no idea, I've faced worse in my lifetime.

"But, you already gave me one two days ago. And this surgery... It's for professionals. Highly recognized ones at that. There's no way..."

She laughed, in a fucking elegant way, if that mattered. "There's no way what? There's no way you can perform a surgery like that?"

"Aren't you on trial right now because you want to be a professional doctor? Or is it the low class recognized ones you want to become?" She continued, words slashing just as much as the mocking look in her eyes.

I bit my lips inwardly, fighting back the bitter feeling that rose in my chest rapidly.

"Tell me, Danica, You can't do this right? I mean, it's still okay to give up now. Just say the word and you'll be free from any surgery of 1% success rate" she added, expression ridiculously soft and concerned.

I knew she was not. The woman was the devil's incarnate herself.

So I smiled, sweetly, slowly, knocking off the smile on her own face before responding.

"Of course I can. Why wouldn't I?"

She scoffed bitterly. "You can?"

"Yes, I can. And I will. You want that too, don't you, Doctor Renee?" I asked and she finally found a sloppy smile back.

"Yes of course. Go ahead. Do your best" She muttered with a knowing smirk.

She probably thought 'Pride would be the end of this girl. There's no way she would successfully carry out the darn surgery'

But she was wrong. My determination ran deeper than anyone could ever imagine. I'd read about the hardest surgeries from thousands of years ago and somehow, I came across something like what I'm about to do.

It was so amusing to me, that I'd studied it a few more times than once. But this would be my first time putting it to practice.

I can do this. I know I can. I must. And I most definitely will.

"And the consent?" I asked and she picked up a paper from her drawer before pushing it to me.

"Given" she said simply and I read through the heading 'Legal Consent Form'. There it was, the signature of the patient's guardian. Whoever they are, I wondered how hard it must have been to grant consent to a surgery that had a 1% of 100 success rate.

I wouldn't if I were in their shoes... Or maybe I would.

That doesn't matter right now though. What matters is going through with the darn surgery and coming out with glittering success.

I have a life to save, a grief to end, a congratulations to uphold and also a reward to look up to.

There was so much in line right now and I wouldn't mess it up. Goddess help me.

"What are you still waiting for?" Renee thundered and I dropped the form back on her table before walking out of her office.
