Chapter 28 028
Danica's POV
Bianca slept off before the end of a romcom drama show she was watching, while I couldn't stop thinking about my meeting with Joey.
I acted okay back there but deep down, I was anything but. I couldn't help wondering if all she said was the plain truth or if she said all that out of spite to make me give up.
Did my Father really had no faith in me? Did he really not think for once that I could succeed? Had he really totally dimmed me unfit of being capable of something good?
Those questions kept racing through my mind, keeping me wide awake. Sleep had totally eluded me despite the tiredness that raked through me.
I sat on the bed, staring at Bianca's peaceful face for a while before looking straight out of the window.
All my life, everything I've done, I did to please another. Asides treating those stray rogues, battered wolves in the forest, I've never for once done anything because I wanted to. I did all to be seen. To be loved. To be appraised by my own family, my father if not my step family.
Now I got to show the world the talent of a hidden life saver. The Grayson family would be again recognized for something meaningful and I would be able to save as many lives as possible. I thought I was killing two birds with a single stone throw, but obviously I wasn't.
Father would never acknowledge me as a daughter he could be proud of. I doubt he would, even if he saw a virtual proof.
I stood up from the bed quietly, and headed for the windows. I unhooked the lock and pushed it open gently.
Cool air welcomed me, soothing all my aching nerves as much as it could. The beautiful sight from my window soothed me even more.
I peered down at the empty dark grounds, the peace and quiet warming my skin.
My feet itched to take a walk round those empty walls. But what if someone sensed something and attacked me, thinking I was a night robber?
I couldn't risk that with a wolfless body like mine. I would be roasted meat before I'm able to take just one walk round the field..
I sighed again, staring even farther into the woods and a bright blue reflection made me look down at my hand. My bracelet was glowing again. I stared at it for a while until it stopped again.
And then I heard something. A movement. Beneath my window sill.
I look down abruptly, determined to catch the trail of whoever it was. My gaze connected with a familiar broad back and glowing black hair that always seemed to call to my fingers.
His back tensed and he stopped walking as well, noticing a presence just like I did a few minutes ago.
He slowly turned to look back and I immediately sank into the ground, fingers still gripping the edge of the window sill.
I had no idea why I was hiding when I did nothing wrong but the deed was done and I hoped he truly hadn't seen me... If not, the embarrassment would be too much for a single person.
But he did.
And he wouldn't let it go this time either.
"You do know I saw you before you hid behind those corners, don't you?" He asked, his voice loud enough for me to hear and I bit my lips gently, lifting myself from the ground as slowly as a snail on a mission.
I revealed my face up to eye level before blinking twice and I swear I saw him shake his head with a grin, but that was gone before I could dwell on it.
"Would you like to go on a walk with me?" He asked and I instantly revealed my full face, nodding quickly at his question.
Then I spun on my heels, turned to grab a robe from my room before going all the way downstairs quietly, making sure to not wake Bianca because of my excitement.
I almost got lost along the way but he found me quite easily.
The walk was calm, refreshing. It was all I needed to get Joey and my father out of my head. It was everything I needed to get rid of the sour feeling that resided deep in my heart even after Joey left.
She did look really scary when she said she was going to make me pay for dismissing her words effortlessly. But I was too engrossed in myself to dwell on it before. Now, it made my blood freeze.
"How did the trial go, earlier today?" He asked and a little smile touched my lips.
"It was... thrilling. I haven't felt so proud of myself in a while" I told him truthfully.
He nodded thoughtfully.
"I'm proud of you too, Doc. Even Ivan couldn't deny it as well" he replied and I stopped walking abruptly.
"Ivan? As in Doctor Renee?" I asked to be sure I heard the right thing and he nodded once in affirmation.
"Yes, Renee"
Wow. That was... Practically the best thing I've heard today, if he hadn't forced it out of her by any means.
"I'm glad to know that" I said simply and the silence stretched thick between us, until I broke it again.
"You got me a TV?" I said, more like a question than a statement.
"Your friend mentioned that you tend to get bored very easily, I couldn't think of anything else" He admitted and I smiled again. I mean, I've been smiling quite a lot since I came into this palace and met him.
Thinking about that made me smile even more.
"You didn't have to" I muttered, trying to wipe the smile off my face but bitch wouldn't leave.
"Is that a smile I see right there? Why do I feel like you don't mean that?" He pointed and my cheeks immediately heated up.
"Thank you" I muttered in appreciation. "I do mean that" I added and he laughed.
Holy. Sinful. Selene. I would give anything to hear that again.
"Aren't you nervous about tomorrow's trial? It might be more difficult than what you had to face today" he asked.
"I am. If I said I'm not, I'm only lying. I really am. But I wouldn't stand for defeat unless I try" I replied as a matter of fact, my head hung low as I spoke but his finger tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear made me look up.
And damn, I shouldn't have. He was standing close. Too close. He didn't step back, if anything, he leaned closer and my legs wouldn't move either.
Just as he was about to kiss me, a sharp shriek pierced through the air and I wrenched myself out of his personal space, my heart tightly lodged in my throat as I looked around for the source of the sound.
Alexander's gaze was fixed on something through the darkness. As I narrowed my eyes in his line of sight, my gaze ceremoniously fell on a very little she-wolf.
Her face was tear-stricken, her lips pouty as she cried helplessly and alone in the dark. My legs carried me to her even before my brain could process it.
Alexander was already with her but she wouldn't stop crying nor did she stop to say a single word.
His frustration was evident as he asked her endless questions only for her to answer none of them. His determination not to give up despite that made me giggle.
"Hey, little beauty..." I trailed off sweetly, squatting to her level right beside the Alpha.
"What's wrong? What are you doing out here by this time of the night?" I asked softly, wiping at the tears that stained her cheeks.
"I can't find my Mama" She hiccupped, panting from all the tears.
"Ohh no, I'm so sorry, little one. When was the last time you saw your Mama?" I asked and she described the exact moment and even the place she last saw her mom.
Such a smart little girl.
"How about we do this? I help you find your mom, and you stop crying?" I asked and her eyes immediately lit up.
"Really? You're going to find my mom?" She asked, wiping at her tears quickly as she did.
"Of course! This big wolf would be glad to help too... Right?" I muttered, looking up at Alexander with pleading eyes.
His gaze flickered between me and the little girl and when he exhaled slowly, I knew we'd won. He couldn't refuse even if he wanted to.
"Yeah, why not?" He muttered in a low voice and she immediately threw herself into my arms.
"Thank you, Auntie! You're the prettiest lady I've ever seen" she exclaimed as I lifted her in my arms while standing straight.
"Awww, really?
" I teased, caressing her small chin.
"Yes, you are" her small faded into the night as we headed to the places she described.
