Chapter 60

Hayden and I spent the next three days in the bedroom. We didn’t leave for food, instead it was just brought up for us. After the three days, it was time to head out. Everyone attached a bag to their leg, so we had clothes when we arrived as well as some supplies; we would need while we waited to attack.

We planned to run as our wolfs as it would be the faster. We were supposed to stick to the woods. We all shifted and there we stood. It would have been some sight if a human had seen us. Tons of wolves just standing together like this.

We took off running. The bags dragging behind us. We weaved and ducked through the forest. It took all day to get to our location. Everyone began to spread out. We tried to stay mostly together though.

Mates were curled up together. We couldn’t light fires as it may have alerted the hunters of our presence. Hayden and I were snuggled up together against a large tree. “Are you nervous.”

“I would be a fool not to be. But I am also excited.”

“Excited?”

“Yes, you all said I would have the pleasure of killing McConners myself, so I am looking forward to that.”

“Ha, well keep that prize in mind and I am sure you will do great.”

“I guess I am nervous about you and the others.”

“Why would you be nervous about that.”

“You may have seen what they are capable of, but you don’t know what it does to your mind. I am just thinking if we don't win others will have to go through that. But to know others are going through what I did is worse than going through it mysel”

“That won't happen.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I do.”

“And why is that.”

“The goddess would not have chosen you to do this if she thought you would fail.”

“Still.”

“I know, I know.”

I snuggled closer to Hayden. The night passed and before we knew it the sun had set. We made our way to the forest edge. Monroe and his team moved to the fence line. The crouched down and began to dig. They made fast progress and then they began to slip under the fence. Just like promised He had turned off the fence and we began to all climb.

We regrouped on the other side, and we split up. Every group was to clear buildings. But something was wrong there wasn’t any patrols. There were no hunters in any of the buildings. Then The Alphas and I made our way to the largest building.

The door was open, and something just felt wrong. We cautiously went in. We walked the corridors. We heard shrieking and followed it. We reached a door that was where the shrieking had come from. We slowly opened it.

When we did, we saw cells. There was a giant hole in the room, and you could see walkways down to the bottom of the cavern with cells lining the spiraling corridor. The cavern had to extend deep beneath the actual building. We walked in to see wolfs in the cages. Some were dead. I heard the shrieking again and went to find one wolf who was alive. I tried to open the cage. I pulled hard and I felt that it was giving away.

I went to pull it again when Hayden pulled me away. “No Ember, you can't help him.”

“What let me go, yes I can.”

“No, you can’t”

I looked at the man. He had small amounts of froth at his mouth. I pulled away from Hayden. “No, we can save him, we can help him. "I tried to set him free again

“No, you cannot he has rabies. If he bites you will die.” Hayden pulled me away again. I was thrashing around. I couldn’t let him die. I refused to believe he was unsavable.

“Hayden they are all infected or dead. Everyone in every cell.”

“Are you sure.”

“Taylor and I checked.”

“We should leave. There is nothing we can do for them.” I was still thrashing around. I had heard the conversation, but I didn’t want to believe it. How could we just leave them.

“Luna, we need to go.”

“I won't leave them. I won’t.” Hayden picked me up and carried me out of the building. We rejoined the others. I was still screaming at the Alphas. How could they leave them. At the very least we should stay with the ones infected till they died.

Taylor spoke. “Hayden, we need to put them out of their misery and insure no one gets infected.”

“I agree. We need to find the gas.” It didn’t take long. And Hayden pulled me away from the building. Then I felt it the ground begin to shake. And I heard a loud boom. The building was exploding.”

At least they are not suffering, I thought to myself. But there would be nothing to burry. It was a risk it burry them. We didn’t know if their bodies may also make us sick. I was still upset though. Hayden tried to use words to comfort me.

“Ember we couldn’t do anything to help them. We have no idea what strain it was. Or if the hunters had made it more contagious it was important to get out of there and destroy the bodies. I hope you understand that.”

“I do but I don’t like it.” I was still upset over the situation, but I understood it was a necessary. We all stood there and watched the building burn. Hayden spoke up. “Why was this place abandoned.”

“I don’t know maybe they were just done here.”

“Maybe Monroe. Any ways we should head back and regroup.” We all moved back to the woods where our stuff was stashed. Everyone took their time gathering up their supplies. We had all secured our items and shifted. Once everyone was ready, we began the long run home.
