Chapter 22
Soon after, the government officials in charge of this project arrived.
Isabelle welcomed them warmly.
Kane had already arranged everything - it was basically just a formality.
But Isabelle didn't know that, so she was extra careful and cautious.
The government workers gave Isabelle high praise and couldn't stop complimenting her.
They were being completely sincere.
"Thank you all for your trust. I will definitely do my best to complete the bridge construction project!" Isabelle promised earnestly.
After seeing off the government workers, Isabelle breathed a huge sigh of relief.
"Isabelle, I didn't let you down, did I?" Kane said with a smile.
Isabelle snorted playfully, "I guess you're somewhat capable!"
Kane put his arm around Isabelle's slender waist, "Tonight, don't you think you should reward me properly?"
Isabelle's pretty face turned red as she huffed, "In your dreams!"
Not far away, Evelyn watched Kane and Isabelle flirting, so angry she nearly ground her teeth to dust!
"Roman, what did you find out? Does he really own Lockwood Tower or not?"
Evelyn turned her gaze to Roman.
Roman looked pleased, "I just got some news. The reason Kane got Lockwood Tower is because Bobby was arrested by the military - he must have done something wrong, which gave Kane the opportunity!"
"Don't worry, the Lockwood family won't let Kane get away with this! They won't just hand over Lockwood Tower without a fight!"
"That scared me! I thought Kane was so capable!"
Evelyn laughed mockingly.
She quickly reported this to Frank.
"This is outrageous!"
"The project just started and he's already caused us this much trouble!"
Frank slammed his hand on the table in anger, his face dark.
Evelyn struck while the iron was hot, "Grandpa, Isabelle needs at least five million dollars upfront to start this project. Where would she get that kind of money? If the family doesn't provide it, we can definitely force her to give up her position as project manager!"
"That's a good idea!" Frank hung up the phone.
Evelyn put away her phone, very pleased.
If Isabelle couldn't get the five million dollars advance, the project manager position would be hers!
The Lockwood Manor.
Brightly lit.
Luxury cars were parked in front.
Well-dressed people in suits sat formally - they were all Ophelia's relatives.
On the ground lay the bodies of Bobby and Bruce.
The atmosphere was terrifyingly tense!
Just then, Ophelia rushed in.
When she saw the bodies on the ground, she looked thunderstruck, her expression twisted, "What happened? Who killed Bobby and Bruce?"
Someone said shakily, "Ms. Rivera, some people just came and delivered Bobby and Bruce's bodies."
"Do you know who they were?"
"No, but they left a message before they left!"
"Tell me now!"
Ophelia's slender body released a powerful pressure!
"They said this was a gift from Kane, to give us a reminder - there are still twenty-one days left until the one-month deadline!"
"So you're saying this was Kane's doing?"
Silas, sitting in his wheelchair, looked twisted with rage and roared, "Mom, we absolutely cannot let this guy get away with this!"
"He hurt Silas before. I was going to let him live a few more days since the Mercenary King is in Harborview City, but I didn't expect him to push his luck and kill Bobby and Bruce too!"
"I'm going to tear him to pieces!"
Ophelia was furious, veins bulging on her slender neck.
"Ophelia, don't be impulsive. I've already sent someone to investigate this. We should know more soon." Ophelia's brother-in-law, Victor Kamara, said.
"Aunt Ophelia, I've found out what happened!"
Just then, a young man rushed in urgently.
Evan Kamara.
Victor's son.
"Tell me quickly!"
"At first, Kane went to Lockwood Tower to demand ownership of it. Kane and one of his friends beat up Bruce and Bobby."
"What?"
"Bruce had so many bodyguards - I heard each one was a retired special forces soldier hired at great expense!"
"Those guys got beaten up too!"
Someone quickly said, "Wait, wasn't Bobby close with Wolf King?"
"I called Wolf King, but he wouldn't answer my calls. To find out exactly what happened, Aunt Ophelia, you'll need to call Wolf King yourself." Evan said hurriedly.
"I'll call him right now!"
Soon, the call connected.
Ophelia asked, "Wolf King, what exactly happened with Bruce and Bobby?"
"Damn it, you people almost got me killed! I'm telling you, this has nothing to do with me. If you call me again, I'll kill you!"
On the phone, Wolf King cursed furiously.
Although Wolf King had left at the time, he hadn't gone far. He knew what had happened.
With one phone call, Kane had summoned a fully armed military force of over ten thousand people.
Helicopters!
Tanks!
Artillery!
Countless weapons!
Even now, thinking about it made Wolf King's legs go weak.
He had just received a warning - he couldn't breathe a word about what happened today, or he would face death!
Wolf King hung up directly.
In the villa, there was deathly silence.
They never expected that when Ophelia called Wolf King, not only would she learn nothing, but she'd get chewed out.
Ophelia's face looked terrible.
"What's going on? Why does Wolf King seem so afraid of Kane? Who is Wolf King? He's a champion fighter!"
Ophelia frowned, "How could Kane be such a good fighter?"
Last time, she had seen that Kane had some fighting ability, but she didn't believe Kane could make Wolf King afraid.
"Ophelia, I think Wolf King must have been beaten by Kane's friend and feels too embarrassed to say why."
"Maybe Kane got lucky and met some big shot in Harborview City's maximum security prison."
"Wolf King may be good, but he's not invincible. It's normal for him to lose to someone else."
Victor's eyes darted around as he forced an explanation.
"That must be it!"
"Otherwise, how would Kane, a criminal who just got out of prison, dare to threaten the Lockwood family?"
Evan's pupils contracted.
"No matter who he knows, we must get revenge!" Silas said through gritted teeth.
"Of course. Wolf King may be good, but at the end of the day he's just muscle. Our family is now a respectable force!"
"Back then, many families were involved in that matter. Who doesn't owe our family a favor?"
Everyone chattered on, their faces full of confidence, as if they had already trampled Kane underfoot.
Ophelia's pretty face showed more confidence.
"Mom, I think we should still be careful. I think Kane isn't simple."
A young man with blonde hair and blue eyes said quietly.
Jerry Lockwood.
Ophelia's second son.
Unlike Silas's violent and arrogant personality, he was more careful and cautious.
He looked sunny and handsome, but gave off a very sinister feeling.
"Not simple? So what? What does a criminal have to fight our family with?"
Silas sneered, "Jerry, aren't you being too timid!"
Jerry said helplessly, "Silas, I'm just thinking of the family!"
He always felt Kane wasn't simple!
Ophelia's eyes shot out a cold gleam, "Then let's wait! Once we find out who the big shot behind Kane is, I'll hang his body from Lockwood Tower and let everyone see what happened to this former golden boy!"
