It's been two months since Olivia's death, and everything had somehow settled into a semblance of order. Though the memory of that day lingered like a shadow over all of us, no one ever spoke of it. The silence was a shared agreement, an unspoken understanding that some wounds are too deep to touch.
George and Theressa had grown closer in these past weeks. Their bond, forged in shared grief and the shocking revelation of their siblinghood, had strengthened immeasurably. It was as if discovering they were brother and sister had given them a piece of the family they both desperately needed. They found solace in each other, a new sense of belonging that had been absent for so long.
For Theressa, the revelation about George being her brother had been a whirlwind of emotions. She had spent years feeling disconnected, adrift in her own life, and then, in a single moment, she found a brother she never knew she had. But with that revelation came a host of complications. One of the most significant was Marcelo.
Marcelo and Theressa's relationship had always been intense, filled with passion and misunderstandings. After Olivia's death, things had changed. Theressa couldn't bring herself to rekindle their romance. Learning about George had shifted something fundamental in her. She was no longer the same person, and Marcelo sensed it too. There was a distance between them now, a chasm that neither knew how to bridge.
George, for his part, was dealing with his own struggles. The loss of Olivia, the sister he had known and loved all his life, was a blow that had left him reeling. But finding Theressa had given him a new purpose, a new focus. He threw himself into being the best brother he could be, determined not to let this newfound connection slip away. They spent hours talking, sharing stories, and building the sibling relationship they never had the chance to develop growing up.
A lot had changed since that day. Justin and Theressa had grown closer again, rekindling their old friendship. Every weekend, Theressa, George, and Mary would gather for dinner, finding comfort in each other's company and building a new sense of family.
Theressa had returned to work as Marcelo's secretary. Their interactions were strictly professional, each keeping a careful distance, wary of crossing any boundaries. Marcelo never tried to bring up their past or their complicated relationship, and Theressa mirrored his restraint.
The silence surrounding their relationship, and the revelation that they were related, was profound. Theressa had no issue with continuing their relationship, but she worried that Marcelo would find the idea of being involved with his brother's sister uncomfortable. So, she never broached the subject.
Despite the complexities, life continued. Mornings in the office were filled with routine tasks and polite conversations. Theressa would bring Marcelo his coffee, and they would discuss the day's agenda. There was an underlying tension, a layer of unspoken words and unresolved feelings, but they both chose to ignore it, focusing on their work instead.
Theressa couldn't help but notice Marcelo's lingering glances, the way his eyes would soften when he looked at her. She wondered if he felt the same way she did, if he too was struggling with the same conflict. But she kept her thoughts to herself, afraid of disrupting the fragile balance they had achieved.
"Can you step out?" Justin asked on the other end of the call, his voice sounding unusually serious. Theressa furrowed her brows in confusion.
It was Sunday, and she had planned to sleep all day, but Justin's call seemed to have disrupted her plans. Reluctantly, she got out of bed, threw on some comfortable clothes, and made her way to the front door.
When she stepped outside, she saw Justin standing by his car, leaning against it with a casual yet confident posture, like a gentleman waiting for his lady. The sight made her smile, and she couldn't help but let out a little laugh.
He was dressed up like he had a date or something, his clothes immaculate and his demeanor charmingly confident.
"What's this? You look too good to be true," Theressa teased, staring at Justin suspiciously.
Justin dramatically took off his glasses and struck a pose. "What do you think? Would you like to head somewhere with this imperfect man standing before you?" he asked, trying to use a British accent. His exaggerated attempt was so off that Theressa couldn't help but laugh harder.
"Come on. What are you waiting for? Go get dressed," Justin urged, gesturing towards her house with a flourish.
Theressa shook her head, still chuckling. "Alright, alright. Give me a minute," she said, heading back inside to change.
Theressa exhaled deeply as she sifted through her wardrobe, her smile fading into the distance as her eyes settled on the dress from her and Marcelo's first trip. The sight of it made her heart ache. Maybe, just maybe, they weren't meant to be. She had been telling herself that every time her thoughts wandered back to Marcelo.
She needed to get over him. With a determined sigh, she pushed all the dresses to the side, searching for something that wouldn't remind her of the past. Finally, she found a simple, elegant dress that suited the unknown occasion and quickly changed into it.
Maybe Justin could help her; maybe he could be the one to get Marcelo out of her mind. That was why she never rejected any of Justin's offers to go on dates. "All I need is to build the spark between us," Theressa would say to herself, convincing herself that she could totally fall out of love with Marcelo.
As she and Justin arrived at their date spot-a fancy restaurant that matched Justin's immaculate dressing-Theressa felt a mix of anticipation and hope. She was determined to move on, to find happiness again.
The restaurant was everything she had expected: elegant decor, soft ambient lighting, and a sophisticated atmosphere. As they were led to their table, Theressa took in the surroundings, appreciating the effort Justin had put into planning this evening.
But what she never expected was to see an old friend of hers. Eunice.
