Chapter 86
I prepared a hearty lunch according to Kane's taste and packed it up to bring to his company.
Actually, I didn't know the mafia even had a company.
I was a bit curious whether everyone inside was like Kane, wearing suits every day and carrying guns.
I poked my head in as I walked into Kane's company.
Just as I was about to send him a message, the receptionist stopped me.
She was a pretty blonde woman who looked about twenty-five years old.
She wore a well-fitted suit, and her eyes showed that familiar look of disdain I knew so well.
She glanced at me and said coolly, "What are you doing here?"
I lifted the lunch box in my hand and said, "I'm here to see Mr. Moretti."
The receptionist froze for a moment when she heard this, then laughed and rolled her eyes at me.
She said to her colleague nearby, "How many is this this month? Pretending to be close with our boss, but really just trying to get into his bed."
As she spoke, she laughed.
The colleague next to her looked a bit embarrassed, gently tugging at her clothes and saying, "Don't say that. Why don't we check with the boss?"
The receptionist brushed off her colleague's hand and interrupted her impatiently.
"Don't you remember what happened when that woman named Alice came here with a photo of her and the boss, and we let her go up?"
The colleague's eyes showed some hesitation, but finally she said, "But at least, Lauren, you should be nicer to people."
Lauren looked at me again, the disdain in her eyes even more obvious.
Her voice was completely unrestrained, "Look at what she's wearing. Everything she has on probably doesn't add up to fifty bucks. Do you think someone like this would have any connection with the boss?"
I looked down at my clothes and couldn't help but blush.
Because I was cooking, I was worried the smell would stick to those expensive clothes Kane gave me, so I dug out the cheap clothes I'd brought myself.
I didn't expect Lauren to misunderstand me because of these clothes.
The anger that had just started to rise in me subsided a bit.
After all, there had been incidents before of people pretending to be Kane's companion, and I didn't want to cause trouble for the receptionist.
So I stepped forward again and said as gently as possible, "I'm Kane's wife."
Unexpectedly, this statement not only didn't change Lauren's attitude toward me, but made her laugh even more dramatically.
Sharp and grating, just like I'd heard countless times before.
After she finished laughing, she continued to look at me with that contemptuous gaze, "Look at what you're wearing. Are you kidding me? How could Mr. Moretti marry a country bumpkin like you?"
I opened my mouth, and the anger I'd just suppressed rose again.
The reason she was blocking me wasn't just because people had pretended to be Kane's companion before, but more because she looked down on me from the bottom of her heart.
She thought I looked tacky, like I was the same kind of person as those women trying to latch onto Kane.
My expression went cold, and I said to Lauren, "I'm definitely going to tell my husband about this."
Lauren rolled her eyes at me again and said, "If you can actually see Mr. Moretti, I'll get on my knees and apologize to you."
I was speechless.
Why are people like this always the same?
With their shallow understanding, they look down on anyone whose appearance doesn't fit their expectations.
I took a deep breath, turned around, pulled out my phone, brought up my chat history with Mr. Moretti, and said, "Look for yourself. Kane asked me to bring him lunch."
But Lauren didn't even look at my phone, just pushed my hand aside.
"Technology is so advanced these days that anyone can fake chat records. If you're so capable, have Mr. Moretti come down to meet you. I'm sure someone like Mr. Moretti wouldn't fail to come get his wife."
Lauren looked at me with eyes full of mockery, as if waiting for me to be at a loss and show the embarrassment of having my lies exposed.
I was really getting angry now and immediately called Kane.
But the phone that usually only rang three times kept ringing for a long time.
I frowned, looking at the phone screen that automatically hung up after no one answered for so long, and bit my lip gently.
Seeing me like this, Lauren laughed even more happily, "What, are you going to keep pretending? Nobody here is giving out Oscars for acting."
Her words were so harsh that the colleague next to her couldn't stand it anymore.
She stood up and said to me, "I'm sorry, miss. We've been punished by the boss before for letting people in by mistake. If you really are Mrs. Moretti, then please have the boss come down to get you."
Lauren yanked the receptionist back, glared at her colleague, and said, "Kelly Kim, what's wrong with you? Why waste your breath on someone like this?"
Kelly Kim looked helpless, too.
She looked at Lauren and said, "Can you stop being such a snob all the time? You've offended the boss's sister because of this before, haven't you?"
I'd never heard that Kane even had a sister, and I hadn't seen it mentioned in any public information either.
Lauren's expression changed, as if she were remembering something.
But in the end, she just snorted coldly and said with her neck stiff, "That lady clearly had class, but look at her—what is she? How could she possibly be the boss's wife? Some people see news about our boss getting married and think we working people don't know, so they come to try their luck."
Lauren's words got more and more unpleasant. Kelly could only look at me apologetically.
She walked up to me and asked softly, "Can you try calling your husband again?"
I readily agreed, but this time the call still didn't go through. Maybe he was in a meeting.
I frowned and pointed to the sofa nearby, "Can I sit there for a while? I'll call him again later."
Kelly nodded gently, "Of course, that's your right."
I was just about to walk over when Lauren grabbed me.
She even grabbed my hair.
Lauren looked completely disdainful, saying, "You think you can wait here for Mr. Moretti? Look at your shabby appearance. Don't bring your poor person's stench near Mr. Moretti. Get lost."
My scalp hurt from being pulled. I struggled, trying to escape from her hands.
But Lauren's hands were like mechanical claws, gripping my hair tightly.
I couldn't break free at all.
Just as tears were about to burst out, I heard a cold voice, "What are you doing?"
It was Kane's voice!
I looked up in delight, met his eyes, and called out, "Mr. Moretti."
Kane quickly walked up to me.
Lauren seemed not to have reacted yet and continued pulling my hair.
Seeing she had no intention of letting go of my hair, Kane impatiently kicked her away.
Lauren screamed and was sent flying to the ground, knocking over business cards and some small gifts at the reception desk.
The cake meant for visitors fell on her head, making her look completely disheveled.
Kelly quickly helped her up and bowed to Kane, "Sorry, Mr. Moretti, Lauren didn't mean it."
Kane completely ignored Kelly and turned to look at me instead.
His tone carried a hint of guilt, "Are you okay, honey?"
I nodded, "You came just in time. At least my hair wasn't completely pulled out."
