Chapter 69
Soon, the maid brought over what I needed, with the food still steaming hot.
I carried the food I'd made over to Kane's side.
Kane's eyes lit up as he took the somewhat hot sandwich from me.
He took a big bite, and sauce splattered out.
I helplessly picked up a napkin and wiped his mouth for him.
Kane gave me a thumbs-up. "Sonya, your cooking is better than anyone else's."
I showed him a sweet smile and said, "If you like it, I can try making more dishes."
I was quite handy with kitchen utensils, just hadn't had many chances before to work with such high-quality ingredients.
Now with Kane, I had the opportunity.
I could learn to cook for Kane gradually.
He was so busy outside every day, and this was about all I could do to help him.
Hearing me say this, Kane's expression softened. He looked at me, his gem-like deep eyes shining bright, and said, "Thank you, darling."
I smiled with pursed lips, somewhat embarrassed as I hooked Kane's finger. "It's getting late now, let's rest early after eating."
Kane nodded and soon placed the empty container by the door. After washing up, he held me as we lay in bed.
I listened to his strong, steady heartbeat, but felt an inexplicable melancholy in my heart.
I didn't even know what I was feeling melancholy about.
I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep.
I dreamed of Mother again.
Mother was gentle and caring, like when I was little, sitting by my side the whole time, her eyes full of love.
She stroked my head. "Dear Sonya, I sense you seem a bit unhappy."
I blinked and looked up at Mother. "Something happened today that put me in a not-so-great mood."
Mother looked at me as if listening carefully.
I told her about Alice.
Mother thought for a while and said, "At least in this matter, Kane didn't hide anything from you. He told you about his past with Alice, and Kane didn't avoid it—he's actively dealing with this situation, so you shouldn't blame him."
I nodded silently.
Mother was right. It was clearly Alice using schemes to try to drive a wedge between Kane and me. I really shouldn't blame him.
Thinking of this, my mood improved quite a bit, though I still felt a little upset.
Mother always understood me best. She hugged me and asked softly, "You're worried this kind of thing will happen again, aren't you?"
I looked at Mother and nodded. "Yes, I'm really worried this will happen again."
Maybe Kane loves me very much now, but what about after a long time?
When I slowly grow old, will Kane really still treat me the same as before?
Thinking of this, I let out a heavy sigh.
Whether in terms of family background, appearance, or ability, Kane was so much better than me.
I really didn't know what I had that could keep attracting Kane and make him love me forever.
My expression made Mother a bit sad.
She held me and said with a gentle laugh, "Darling, you don't need to worry. You're already good enough. I don't think you became worse after meeting him, so he'll definitely keep loving you."
Hearing Mother say this made me feel much better.
I smiled at Mother, a little light appearing in my eyes.
Mother rubbed my head as she looked at me.
Even in a dream, being in Mother's arms gave me an unprecedented sense of security and comfort.
I looked up at Mother and asked, "Dear Mother, can you come visit me in my dreams more often?"
Mother readily agreed, and I was very happy. This was probably the happiest dream I'd had recently.
When the sun rose, I felt Kane move beside me.
I immediately opened my eyes and met Kane's slightly sleepy gaze.
Kane raised an eyebrow and asked softly, "Did I wake you?"
I quickly shook my head. "I usually wake up around this time anyway."
Kane smiled and pulled me up, and we washed up and had breakfast together.
Just then, Athena came over.
She glanced at me, then turned to Kane and said, "There's an invitation that Luca sent over for you."
Hearing Luca's name, I couldn't help but shudder.
Past events surfaced in my mind.
No matter what, the harm Luca brought me was real.
In the short term, I couldn't possibly forget that pain.
Kane sensed my fear. He looked coldly at Athena and said, "From now on, don't bring anything from this person over, and tell him not to come here, or I'll deal with him."
Athena hesitated, but still spoke up. "Luca said this is an invitation from a community you used to live in."
My eyes widened when I heard this—it was the community I used to live in.
A kind and gentle smile immediately appeared in my mind.
Before marrying Luca, Mother and I lived in a working-class community.
The people in that community didn't have much money, but everyone helped each other out, and life was pretty good.
The only thing that made me a bit unhappy was that there was a little boy there who always bullied me.
Back then, we were both under ten years old.
Our builds were completely different, and he often pinned me down and beat me up.
I really suffered a lot of bullying from him. Going back now, I hoped I wouldn't run into him.
I looked at Athena and said softly, "Let me see the invitation."
I opened it and saw it was indeed from Ms. Sophie from my old community.
I was actually a bit tempted. Regardless of what others were like, I should at least go back and see Ms. Sophie.
So I nodded to Kane and said, "I'd like to go to this gathering, is that okay?"
Seeing that I wanted to go myself, Kane didn't say anything more.
We looked at the time, and Kane frowned. "I won't be home at this time—I should have work."
I quickly waved my hand at Kane. "It's fine, I can go by myself. Ms. Sophie is a very nice person; she won't make things difficult for me."
Kane thought for a moment, then nodded. "Then let Athena go with you. She can stay at a distance and keep you company."
I nodded. Kane's concern for me made me very happy.
I picked out a piece of fried egg for him and said softly, "This egg is the kind you like."
I'd observed before that whenever Kane ate eggs, he always ate the ones with runny yolks.
Of all the fried eggs on the table, only this one had a runny yolk.
Kane looked at me, the corners of his mouth turning up slightly, and reached out to pat my head.
"Since you're going to a gathering, you should dress up nicely and let those people who weren't good to you know how well you're doing now."
Kane's words surprised me a bit.
Had he noticed my earlier emotional reaction?
Hearing me say this, Kane said with a smile, "None of your thoughts can escape my eyes, darling."
I nodded with a red face.
Soon, Athena brought several outfits for me to choose from.
I chose a black long dress, similar to a nun's habit, not too flashy or showy.
After all, my main purpose for going back this time was to visit Ms. Sophie.
What others thought of me didn't really matter to me.
