Chapter 91 Another Shift
ADRIANA
“Hey, wake up!”
I didn’t move at first because I was so tired, I’d spent the entire day moving around town trying to get items to decorate Leo’s room.
I’d thought that his favorite color was blue so I bought everything in that color only for Hazel to suddenly remember that it’s not blue, it’s green. So we had to go back to all of the stores and swap everything from blue to green.
Then after that, I had to think of a good birthday present for him. I hadn’t seen Elijah for a couple of days now and I couldn’t ask him what Leo liked.
And I didn’t want to ask Leo either because I wanted it to be a surprise. So I just moved around, trying to pick one exact thing that would make him happy.
“You look even more confused than I am and I’m the one thinking.”
She looked up from the kids’ items in the store.
“So, you’ll have to do this every day if you want to shop for your kid? I don’t think I want kids.”
I looked at her.
“What? They’re amazing, they’re like mini versions of you.”
She scrunched her face and shook her head.
“One version of me is enough. Trust me, no one can handle it.”
“Aiden doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, he wants mini versions of you every day.”
She gave me a look.
“Please, don’t start. I genuinely think I would throw up.”
I laughed and we checked out of the store. Eventually, when we were done with everything, we looked at all we’ve bought.
“I thought you said you weren’t throwing a party.”
“I’m not. I just want to decorate his room and take pictures.”
She raised her eyebrow at me and looked at the decorations again.
“You’re definitely having a party.”
I mean, if it turned into a party, who was I to stop it?
“So first things first, how are you going to get him out of his room tonight?”
“Easy, I’ll just send him to Elijah’s room to sleep there.”
She scoffed.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed but since he got back, he hasn’t exactly had the time to speak to anyone so I doubt that he’d been sleeping in that room tonight.”
And Leo won’t want to sleep alone in my room either.
“Well, I can sneak out when I notice he has fallen asleep.”
She shrugged and we got back home that evening, carrying the things up the stairs quietly so that Leo wouldn’t come out of his room.
After dinner, I just went to bed because I was so exhausted so I didn’t hear when Yara woke me up.
“Wake up, you lazy wolf! It’s time.”
I slowly raised my head and looked around me, I saw that it was night. Maybe I was losing it because I was sure that I heard someone speaking to me.
Before I could rest my head back, I heard her voice again.
“You’re not losing it. I’m talking to you. Get your fat ass up, we have to go outside now.”
I rolled my eyes, remembering how my mom used to wake me up early for school back then. It was a surprise that I even got to go to school.
My dad didn’t want me to, saying that I was a girl and that it was a waste of money but I’m glad my mom fought for me.
I dragged myself down the stairs, the sleep in my eyes feeling very heavy.
“What in the world is it that couldn’t wait till morning that you had to show me at two am?”
She led me outside toward that garden where I had first shifted.
“What are we doing here? It’s the middle of the night.”
“Smell that? That’s the smell of the fresh night air. You’re going to shift.”
Was I the only one thinking?
“It’s the middle of the night,” I repeated.
“So, this is the time when our powers are strongest. We need to shift so that your body will get used to it. You’ve only shifted once and we need to make sure that your body knows when to shift.”
The sleep had cleared from my eyes now and I slowly removed my clothes, not wanting to have to run back into the house naked.
Even though no one was awake, I didn’t want to risk it. It would be so embarrassing.
I shivered as the cold breeze blew.
“Hurry up before I turn into an ice popsicle.”
She laughed.
“You’re going to have to summon me.”
Why was she torturing me like this? Did she hate me?
“How in the world would I do that? I’ve not done this before.”
“It has to come from within you.”
The only thing that’s coming from within me right now was swear words to tell her.
“Just relax, I’m right here. You just have to see me and reach for me.”
I closed my eyes, trying so hard to concentrate but the only thing that kept running through my mind was the cold.
I was shaking and my fingertips had gone cold.
“Put your clothes back on. You’re shaking like a leaf.”
No kidding. I didn’t waste any time putting on my clothes.
“You’re going to have to rip your clothes if you’re putting them on.”
I’d rather be naked than die of cold out here.
It was easier for me to concentrate now, so I steadied my breath and imagined her. All I had to do was reach for her and unlike last time, it didn’t hurt.
It was still uncomfortable but it didn’t hurt.
“Open your eyes! You’re not blind.”
I laughed and opened my eyes. I couldn’t understand how I was feeling.
Everything seemed so new. I could hear better, I was certainly taller than my human body and I could smell better.
That was why I was able to smell Elijah around me and as soon as I turned around, Yara said the word I’d been longing to hear.
“Mate.”
