Chapter 109 Good Riddance
ELIJAH
I’d been in my office when the guard came in with the report.
“Alpha, I had some news and I don’t know if it’s good news or bad news.”
I stopped what I was doing and looked up. That was the first time he would be saying that.
Roger was my personal guard and he always went everywhere with me so I didn’t understand what he meant by that because he had never said that before.
“Tell me what it is and I’ll tell you if it’s bad or not.”
That’s when he told me.
I slammed my hands on the table and stood up.
“What did you say?”
Roger took a step back.
“I-I said Donald was found dead at the border of his pack with his head cut off.”
Donald was dead. I still couldn’t understand what I was hearing. Roger asked to be excused and I dismissed him.
“Wait, call Hazel for me on your way out.”
What was I going to do now? And how was I going to handle this?
Hazel entered with a curious look on her face.
“What is going on? Roger said you called for me.”
I gestured for her to sit.
“Elijah, say something.”
“Donald is dead. Donald was found at the border of his pack, decapitated.”
She gasped and I heard something fall on the floor but neither of us paid attention to it.
“Does she know?”
She hadn’t spoken to me in two weeks. Even though I had tried to speak to her on countless occasions, she wasn’t listening to me.
Even Hazel had tried to speak to her but she didn’t listen either.
“No, she doesn’t. I just got the information now and I don’t know what to do with it.”
“We have to tell her. I mean, we have to tell her now.”
I frowned.
“Hazel, have you lost it? Don’t you know the situation of our relationship right now? You think this is the right time to tell her that her father is dead?”
I wasn’t stupid and there was no way that I was going to tell her something like that at a time like this. I had to wait for things to get better first before I told her something like this.
“Very well then. So what’s going on in his pack now? I mean, who’s taking over as Alpha?”
That’s something I hadn’t thought about yet. I mean, I just heard it a couple of minutes ago and I was still trying to process it.
“I don’t know what’s going on over there. I mean, Lisa is here and Adriana is up there so both his children can’t rule right now. Maybe we should go over there and see things for ourselves?”
She looked at me.
“Go over to where? His pack? When both his daughters are alive and well and without knowledge of it?”
“I don’t care about telling Lisa. It’s Adriana I’m worried about, I mean how am I going to tell her? She’s not even speaking to me.”
“Would you prefer that she finds out by herself again?”
I knew what she meant by that and I didn’t like it. It wouldn’t make any sense for me to not tell her now and it wouldn’t make any sense for me to tell her now.
I was so conflicted.
“Would you tell her?”
She raised her hands.
“I’m not getting involved in all that. You should handle it yourself.”
She was right. I should tell her to her face. Something as huge as this and the way she hated her father, she would want to know what had happened to him.
Hazel was the one who pushed me to her room and then left me there. I knocked the first time and then the second time, there was no response.
Maybe I should just go in, I mean it was a matter of urgency. So I opened the door to meet with an empty room.
If she wasn’t here, she would surely be in Leo’s room so I went there.
Sure enough, I heard her voice inside laughing with him. I opened the door and the laughter stopped. On her part at least.
“I need to talk to you.”
She didn’t respond to me and she turned back to Leo.
“Adriana please, it’s about your father.”
She paused and her smile disappeared.
“What did you say?”
“I have news about your father.”
Her mood changed immediately and I knew that this was a rough start.
She stood up from the bed.
“I’ll be back in a moment, okay? I’ll be right outside.”
Leo nodded and I gave him a small wave before I left the room.
“What is it? What is going on?”
I should seize this opportunity.
“Adriana, I need to start by saying I’m sorry for what I did to you. You didn’t deserve all that. I’m really sorry.”
She didn’t react, she just stared at me like she could see right into my soul.
“What did you hear about my father, Elijah? I was busy when you called for me.”
I took a deep breath and told her what I heard.
At first, she didn’t move and I was sure that she wasn’t breathing either.
“Adriana,” I moved closer to her but she raised her hand to stop me.
Her breathing became heavy and tears filled her eyes.
“He’s dead.”
Her legs gave way and she fell to the floor.
I crouched beside her and pulled her head into my chest. I was happy that she didn’t push me away. She sobbed for a while before suddenly stopping.
“Do they know who killed him?”
“No, I didn’t ask about that. I don’t even know what to say. I’m sorry for your loss.”
Her face suddenly changed.
“My loss? You mean my gain. He never did anything for me so I’m not in pain about his death. I don’t care that he died. I just hate the fact that I didn’t kill him myself.”
The switch had been so sudden that it took me time to understand it too. She suddenly stood up from the floor, cleaned her tears and cleared her throat.
“Good riddance to bad rubbish.”
